Landing on... gas giants?

Yeah, I know it's unrealistic, but I'd love to see some cloud-hopping, floaty mayhem by going to those currently inaccessible gas giants.

You'd probably need some kind of special tech and/or ship upgrade to be able to do it, but it could be a pretty fun type of unique environment for the game, one with many floating masses instead of a solid "ground level."

    No.

There are 3000000000000000000000000000 planets to explore, and gas giants are in small quantity. There's nothing there, just gas.

Why not, though? Sure, it's fine to have some stuff in there that really is just an inhabitable wasteland, but I love the idea of planets like that. As far as our own solar system goes the gas giants have always been my favourites. I would love to have some far-end game content involving them; cloud hop platforming with noxious air and extreme temperatures and such. They can be few and far between, but challenges like that are fun. Besides that, I'd love to live on Uranus.

This could be interesting as a late game challenge. There could be extremely powerful monsters that live in the harshest conditions imaginable and very useful materials on them.

To be honest, do we truly know what is inside a gas giant? Having solid clouds and what not would be fun, in all parts of the game, just not the end game.

The idea of making them accessible as "endgame"-dungeons has a certain appeal to me. Maybe as some kind of "mecha-only" planet.

Are you... seriously asking this question? You know what a gas giant is right? How absurd the very idea of landing on one is? How they would hold NOTHING on them?

it is thought that Jupiter has a rocky core, but if you were able to get to it, and land on it, the pressure there is calculated to be between 3000 and 4500GPa, or 3,000,000,000,000 to 4,500,000,000,000 Pascals, compared to the standard pressure at the surface of the Earth: 101,325 Pascal, with this in mind perhaps people will stop asking to land on these monstous things, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Mostly Hydrogen and Helium

    Thank you!

Now watch people ask for suits that let you go where you please.

Perhaps late game we can develop gas extractors that would siphon elements from the planet? If we have a sealed suit to explore moon biomes why can't we extract gases to help craft end game materials?

And I just realized I asked for gas extraction and sealed suits glossing over that whole pressure issue..hmm..maybe they can be automated extraction facilities..like..Cloud City platforms?

I'd love to have a crazy floating base on a Gas Giant. I know it doesn't make the most sense..

    but uhm...

neither does having friendly environments that support life and pleasant climates on every single planet.

That's just the current state of affairs. I expect many planet environments to become a lot more hostile in the future.

I've added a link to this discussion to a large conglomeration of them, here http://community.playstarbound.com/...and-planets-list-of-ideas.42522/#post-1424947 Just wanted to tell you guys, Also I nabbed a few more links! I kinda want to get all the ideas in one place so they can just go through them, So if you find any more to add, or want to explain your ideas more It'd be great help to start dropping them of here, though this is just a suggestion, and again great ideas guys!(Note to self slow down on these, spam protocol is activating, so thats not fun, anyway the gas giant ideas are great guys!)

While I definitely appreciate what a gas giant is, and I am very much interested in those areas of science as well, I don't see the blasphemy of this subject. Starbound is, as far as I know, not set in our universe. While we should not be able to land on gas giants, we should not be able to mine with a pickaxe and find chests inches from a planet's mantle, or dive into extremely deep pools and mine at the bottom of them. We can also apparently land on magma planets. While having gas giants be purely aesthetic and non-functional is fine and dandy, I see no reason why a suggestion putting some sort of game play element to them being out of the question. :p

    Weeeeeell...

First off, gravity would be so high that you'd be crushed, even if you were wearing some sort of super-strong material. Then the gas pressure would do the same. Then it'd be insanely hot. Then there's the radiation. Then the fact that if you landed on the small rocky core, you'd be surrounded by liquid metallic Hydrogen...

Not really feasible whatsoever. And besides, what would be there that's particularly unique?

  16. Namorax

    Namorax Phantasmal Quasar

The chance to "mine" liquid metallic Hydrogen? ;D

This looks like one of the questions where you have to decide whats more important: is the game is entertaining or is it physically correct?
I wouldn't mind if Starbound bends the laws of physic if the result is fun to play.

There could be many ways to "explain" how the player is able to beam down on a gas giant and walk around. There might be special armor/suits or vehicles. And wasnt there another race that is plannedto be added? The nova kids or something? Considering that they're basically energy in the form of a humanoid, I dont think there is any reason for the them to NOT be able to walk on gas giants.
And if they can, why shouldn't the other races?

Because of physics? *Looks at Novakids" Yep. Totally covered by regular laws of nature.^^

There's a pretty big difference between 'hard' sci-fi and 'soft' sci-fi. Starbound definitely falls into the 'soft' category, so landing on gas giants wouldn't be so out of the question. Don't dismiss something just because it's unrealistic!

Besides, Starbound is sort of half-fantasy, half-sci-fi, I think? I mean, isn't one of the bosses a bone dragon? There's plenty of room for artistic license here.

I know it's soft sci-fi, it's just that it really makes as much sense as them allowing you to land on the sun. Even soft sci-fi doesn;t go there, and when it does, the results are often very, VERY narm-y

...We should be able to land on stars.

    Yessssss! Excellent idea.

That sounds really awesome, actually. Possibly traversing a gas giant's RINGS, all in a row, just heading through astroids. Okay yeah it's not the most realistic but good god it would be fun and cool.

Another neat possibility might be derelict ruins, satellites, something like that.
