L/R Items

    What exactly is the point of having an item in the L or R slot of the hotkey bar?

    Those are left and right click items. You can toggle to them by pressing X (or by pressing the same number hotkey that you currently have selected, for example: you have a pickaxe in 1 and it is selected, pressing 1 again will equip the L and R items, and pressing 1 once more will toggle back to your pickaxe). It also allows you to duel wield 1 handed weapons or a 1 hand and shield.

    You can use the X key to switch to it automatically from anywhere, and use Z to swap the contents of L and R. Early on you have a two handed weapon, so it won't help you much, but later on it will let you sword and shield, or sword and flashlight.
