Outdated Kobold Race v0.1 Giraffe Like Kobold

A savage race of unintelligent, but adorable kobolds.

So, BucketLamp has quite obviously turned the kobold mod from my little weird ideas and into something very cool. I can't get over how much I like the different visuals from BucketLamp's studio. I'll definitely ensure that the B.O.L.D. ends up in the upload. My intention is to have that upload done on the 17th. I've got a bit of free time on Friday and on Monday, but my guess is it won't be enough time to get things ready for stable. I know that there are quite a few oddities and the race-modding community seems to agree that it's easier to go from the ground up than to try to parse through the individual files and make changes.

That said, if people are interested, I can do an upload that should work with stable, but doesn't have full features toward the end of Friday. It would have at very least kobold graphics tossed onto something else, though not necessarily with everything we've gotten going so far.

Let me know if you want a partial-update for the weekend and I can make it happen!

Thank you for the credit, but you're still brave leader. Kobold mod didn't occure without you.
I'll try my hardest to make BOLD a reality, but I'll need to figure out WHAT I can do for AI's.

So I've now officially updated Starbound on my computer, am looking through my files, and beginning to try to piece them together into the new system. It's going to take some work.

In keeping with my original plan, I'm going to be uploading a stable version as soon as I'm able to, probably Friday. The version number will likely be a roll-back from the current one and will include fewer features. On the other hand, it WILL be stable compatible, so that is something!

In terms of the AI, Bucket, I wouldn't want you to kill yourself over it! I can also always, at least for the time being, repeat images in the setup and that will be fine! Maybe Ancestral tech comes in a little less solidly than actual technology.

Of course, if you want to go overboard and make your own A.V.I.A.N.-esque B.O.L.D. AI, you can do that if you like!

Or not. Bloody hell, AVIAN has a ton of frames.

Officially worked on the kobold mod a little bit today!

I've got Starbound Stable running, have my Xbaux extender installed, Felin and the base race jumpstart kit. Kobold is now an option available for selecting, though their clothes don't appear, there isn't an icon for their species, and I'm not certain yet whether they actually run.

But RL is hitting me so I've got to run also!

That AVIAN AI is freaking crazy. I can't even imagine how much time spriting that must have taken.

Send me dem files and I could give them a looksie while you're out!

And I mean all of them, including the old ones.

  7. CaptainKobold

    CaptainKobold Pangalactic Porcupine

I would, but I'm out of the house at the moment. My schedule is a little bit crazy, today I'm working until pretty late and tomorrow I'm busy from 9:30-9:30. Friday, however, I have much of the day available, so I should have PLENTY of time to get the mod at very least running again.

From there, there's going to be a LOT of rebalancing and converting to do, but I think I should be able to bring us back up to our current location pretty quickly. Then I'll add stuff I have resources for and get rolling on finishing up the mod like I was before! Most releases will probably happen on Fridays, probably a new release every two weeks or so.

Tell you what. I'll help you get this mod back up and running. Should be easy enough to do for most of the parts of the mod, aside from weapons. Sad thing is that the New Race Jumpstart Kit isn't nearly as useful as precessors like Daim's Dummies, but with a bit of finagling you can get things working. I'll convo you with some updated files.

I think I actually am pretty close to getting things working! I mostly just haven't spent the time dotting my ts and crossing my is. If you feel like putting things together, you can by all means do so! I may end up redoing it myself though, simply because going through like this was helping me to see some of the structural changes to the game.

The new patching system looks very cool, for example. It almost looks like you can insert things into existing loot tables, which could be quite nice. Additionally, the fact that you can decide where villages appear makes for some potential fun changes, perhaps kobold villages in forests and jungle like places and maybe underground kobold caves in harsher climates...

Has anybody seen any custom races added to outposts, by the way? I feel like a kobold shaman/fortune teller could be a nice addition.

I have to head out, so I won't be able to do all the necessary changes today. But I will try and polish the changes as much as possible by tomorrow night, aside from any status effects or dungeons or that sort of thing because I don't have experience with that type of thing at all.

Ah, I've seen AVIAN, and I think it's pretty good work. Luckily something like a SAIL unit is far easier than pixel art where you have to consider every tiny frame.

Luckily for us, I actually graduated with a interaction (I'd rather say interactive) design major. So animation, is pretty second nature to me. Unfortunately, I really can't illustrate, my icon and Captains is about the limit of my illustrating ability, ha.

The limit of your illustrating ability is fantastic enough that just about anyone who has seen my icon goes, "Awwww! That's adorable and fantastic! How much did you pay to get that made?"

    True facts.

Flattered. Well, good to know people like my art!

Either way I was thinking of really trying to figure out lore for our strain of kobolds.

Maybe our guys managed to get bigger simply because they had more resources.. perhaps the humans all moved on, elves died in multiple catsplosions, dwarves all killed themselves off in a tantrum spiral, and the goblins died from starvation due to not having dwarven slaves to grow food for them. This left kobolds the ability to start more permanent settlements, become larger, stronger and smarter. They developed a shamanic tribe culture, and eventually became almost as prevalent the other races were. They became much smarter than they once were, but they're still fairly scatter brained and their curiosity would have doomed them if they weren't so damn hard to get rid of. The intelligence of the species varies greatly. More likely than not, your average kobold will still be rather dimwitted, getting into all sorts almost-endearing-if-it-wasn't-so-stupid hijinks. There are also much more intelligent kobold that have gone on to become Shaman and leaders of their communities, their intelligences can be anywhere from a dwarf or human of average intelligence to a rather intelligent one. There are even rarer kobold that could go toe to toe with a genius.

However, despite how wise and intelligent some kobold may become, their overall intellect is limited by the average intelligence of their entire race, not having many others to bounce ideas off, the more intelligent members of the race will still come off as relatively ignorant, but extremely quick to grasp strange new ideas. This still means however, on their home-worlds (Created and abandoned by Amok at a whim) a herbalist that has never or rarely ever poisons his patients on accident and can learn how to make remedies by watching nature would be a-kin to up-and-rising pharmacist who found a cure for cancer in our World.

A quick summary of how kobold technology works is basically stating that it really DOESN'T. Almost everything is powered by the forces of nature and sprites summoned by Shaman. Kobold due to their nature of living in a world full of unknown magics kobolds can tap into the natural world, perhaps there is some kind of science behind it, but to us and every other race it's nothing short of magic.

Other races, though vastly unaware of kobold at large in summary will view them as:

Potential responses for viewing a kobold summoner.

Glitch: (potentially aware of kobold as their up-lifters)
"Excited. I can't wait to teach them more!"
"Proud. They will soon be ready to join the other races"

Hylotl: (Also potential up-lifters, may just see them as primitive/cute)
"Let's hope it doesn't play in the mud too much"
"I really hope they taught this one how to use the toilet"
"Is it safe to take it away from its tribe?"

Human: (might be amused by them, thinking since WE are humans, humans should reference DF)
    "Oh, how FUN.."
"Kinda makes you want to build a fortress."
"Better make sure there aren't any Dwarves around"

Floran: (may like them due to their primitive nature and love for eating meat)
"Floran wonderss, if Kobold will go sstabing with them."
"Floran is excited to have sstabing partner!"

The other races I have no idea what they'd think of the Kobold. Anyway, Captain, feel free to comment on any of the above.

I like this idea of kobolds being what was left behind. They are so insular in a sense that this could be a perfect variable to keep them alive. I'm reminded of the dinosaurs going extinct and little mammals that can breed a lot being what is left over. They just keep on showing up, getting more and more connected with nature and spirits, each set of ancestors more associated with the ones before until, perhaps, there's a little bit of the ancestors in every bold. Perhaps, even, the mark of a Shaman is being able to not simply be scatterbrained because of all of the spirits they are dealing with all the time!

I think there definitely has to be something of an understanding that kobolds don't understand any of this technology. They have some things that work in vaguely technological ways, but most of that is coincidence more than anything else. They've picked things up, stolen them, and repurposed them with spirits doing much of the heavily lifting.

In terms of their relationships, I was beginning to play with a couple of ideas. I like your general conceptions of them as well!

Clearly Novakids need to call them 'Li'l doggy' at some point.

It also occurred to me that it could be amusing to have kobolds have been up-lifted already. This is their advanced, more intelligent form. It just... didn't quite take. There's something in their tiny, furry heads that rejects becoming intelligent beyond a certain point. Bit silly, perhaps, but then... this is a kobold mod.

I'm totally up for shooting ideas around on these as much as people would like!

Hwever, despite how wise and intelligent some kobold may become, their overall intellect is limited by the average intelligence of their entire race, not having many others to bounce ideas off, the more intelligent members of the race will still come off as relatively ignorant, but extremely quick to grasp strange new ideas. This still means however, on their home-worlds (Created and abandoned by Amok at a whim) a herbalist that has never or rarely ever poisons his patients on accident and can learn how to make remedies by watching nature would be a-kin to up-and-rising pharmacist who found a cure for cancer in our World.

This is really wonderful for me, but it may end up delaying the release. If it does, then I'd predict kobolds will be back either Monday or Tuesday!

    Update comes out today!

I'm in the process of updating Starbound to check out a @Mackinz update of the kobold mod which looks far more complete than what I had available! From there, I intend to see if I can't bring a couple of things back into place before updating. It likely will not contain every old feature, but it will be a start! Expect that at some point today (definitely before 5, possibly quite a bit before 5.)

Also, I'll have this window open, so any chatter and encouragement will be seen and help![DOUBLEPOST=1424184977][/DOUBLEPOST]Current status: Adding folders, checking error, deleting folder, adding folder.

Update: Quests appear to need to be redone, though I'm not sure how much of that will just be restructuring. I now have the game running and may be posting this largely incomplete version in the near future, if for no other reason than to start tinkering with it a bit more.

    Thank you very much, Cedarfang!

At this point, the mod now appears to be running in game and I /think/ is theoretically playable through, with the exception that you can't make weapons. But still, the planets are filled with items, so you COULD go on out there! Tomorrow I'll get items in game.

I've also realized that armors are going to be a little underpowered at the moment as the numbers appear to have changed from the old version to this one. Oops. It'll be in 0.2!

P.S. It sucks to roll back from 0.7 to 0.1, but I feel like it makes more sense this way.
