Outdated Kobold Race v0.1 Giraffe Like Kobold

A savage race of unintelligent, but adorable kobolds.

    Kobold Race - A primitive race trying to get home and eat delicious food.

    Why Kobolds?

    Kobolds have a long, varied history as weak little beasts who at best provide short times of amusement for angry heroes. One offshoot of this mythos is the "cutebold" from the very excellent game Dwarf Fortress. These specific 'bolds are daring, adorable, and terribly useless in all manner of situations.

    This mod aims to capture the role of a primitive, unintelligent kobold who has abruptly ended up in the stars. Your kobold will lack for advanced knowledge, create inferior equipment, and just generally be less suited for the adventuring life. This will create an added challenge with the extra benefit of adorable little kobolds.


    Current Features:
    This mod is definitely a work in progress. Updates will likely be coming in on a regular basis as we have quite a bit planned!
    • Customizable Kobolds (5 colors, 4 ears, 2 warpaints in 4 colors)!
    • Four sets of kobold specific starter clothes!
    • Extra new item for the exceptionally well dressed kobold!
    • Rewritten introductory codex entries and quests!
    • No matter manipulator! Get by with an axe instead!
    • Monsters drop bones when hunting!
    • Tier One Half Armor made from bones!
    • Custom name-gen!
    • NPC Villager Reactions!
    • New starting spear with hunting attribute!
    • NPC kobolds will spawn with profession spawners and a limited time kobold villager spawner!

    It seemed the next logical step. First tiny wooden hovels and an inability to dig stone, now traveling the stars. Just the obvious progression.

    No kidding? In that case, the fact that kobolds can dig through stone is TOTALLY intentional and not at all because I haven't gotten to that yet.

    Speaking of which... Poll time: Should kobolds start with matter manipulator or just a hatchet? Thematically either of these would probably make sense (either finding it in the hold of the ship or bringing it along while they were exploring) but needless to say this could pretty dramatically alter the early game, especially if the hatchet and/or shovel you could get were weaker than the existing methods?

    I dunno if you are going to implement they pillaged some stuff from the starship. Well you can add a initial quest where you are going to search for a crashed ship, there can be stuff your Cutebold will need.

    Cutebolds have their primitive methods fresh, hutting meat is more easy for them and their leather working is soo good. They can create stuff from the local creatures to match the new world were they are now.

    Not exactly sure how you are going see the race in the long term, but Iam theorizing about using a special stuff from different creatures, not just vanilla leather, Hardened plates, raw meat. You can add plenty of new stuff in their loots.

    Is the ability of the Cutebolds imo, and this idea is not already used by other mod (as far I know).

    There definitely are a lot of things planned for the future of the kobolds!

    Obviously there is still need for more customization at the start. I'm working on figuring out how to color the features, for example, and more features will certainly be added. There's also a bit of a lack in terms of starter clothes at the moment, but @Bucketlamp has already provided some excellent additional clothes that I just haven't had a chance to add in yet! Expect those early 2014 (woo partying tonight!).

    In terms of longer term goals, keeping the feel of kobolds is definitely something I would like to do. As may already be obvious, there are definitely going to be references to KC and the related comics about them. Unless the plan changes significantly, kobolds will likely be based around being slightly weaker than the other races. Their armor will likely give less protection from damage (but may give extra warmth, there's been talk of the possibility that kobolds have less to fear from the cold) and their weapons will likely do less damage, but make up for it by being classed as hunting weapons.

    Their armor will likely be cobbled together with a combination of leather, bones (if I can find a way to ensure everyone has them), and whatever level of metal they currently are at. This will include a pre-metal tier of good old fashioned leathers and possibly some improved leathers along the way. Perhaps the ore will instead be used as offerings to dark gods that enchant the leather and make it better? Definitely something to put in the thought-chest.

    There are also several kobold-specific weapons in the works which will hopefully be interesting!

    1 bra (basicly a leather strap, can't be removed if it's the same as others)
    6 pants, I just like pants.

    Holy crap. Have I mentioned how awesome BucketLamp is?

    I'm working on getting warpaint color to change. Mostly this just isn't something that the other races have, but I think I can manage it by making the war paints hair and the ears into facial hair. Still working out whether that will do it!

    For bones you need to mod the loot table of the creatures, if you are using a Kobold it can be like they are using all the time a hunting bow, and with a tool they can have special loot used by their crafts.

    Yeah, the only reason I haven't modded that yet is a little concern about changing the base game too much, but I suppose adding bones to the hunting table shouldn't change things too much.

    Unless you are using a non-kobold (or non-modded) weapon, I'm thinking it will count as hunting, the idea being that you'll need leather and bones throughout your adventure.

    Also, I have plans for a gathering table which will be used to capture little vermin that aren't visible in game. This will include useful beasts (such as spiders and fluffywamblers) and possibly be used for a quest that is still several steps away from where we are now!

    Maybe you could drag some ideas:

    -1 tier stuff, from first sector creature´s leather/bones.
    -They need a technology that helps to dig hard stone, using the Molten core/quest. Mechanical arm/ pneumatic arm (so they can get strength to use a pick)
    -Metals could improve stuff they need for improve their strength or tools. Because they don´t have good toughness. But using organic stuff could do the trick, bone/leather/pelt/fur/guts

    Tomorrow I anticipate getting a decent amount of time to do some modding! On the docket for immediate work are:

    1) Colorful Kobolds (add brown and blonde kobolds plus any requested colors, get warpaint to be multiple colors)
    2) BucketLamp's Pants (I have the files from BucketLamp and just need to get them into the actual spritesheet. The current floran pants you've been seeing were things I thought I'd already replaced. Oops)
    3) NPC reactions to kobolds for base races.

    What would YOU like to see in the very next update? I'm trying to get together a list of priority things.
