Outdated Kineptic Race Mod 12-22-2015

Magician Space Cats

  1. Quilavabom

    Quilavabom Oxygen Tank

This part of the mod is underdeveloped, admittedly. Healing water is found in oasises on desert planets.

    Alright, thanks.

Might want to see if you can point the player in that direction in-game somehow.

  3. Gratuitous Lurking

    Gratuitous Lurking Space Kumquat

The only real issue with the healing water I've found is it's just unreliable, as not every desert has an Oasis, so it winds up doing RNG a lot.

  4. Quilavabom

I'll consider it if I ever get back into modding again.

Maybe use the Lexicon and have SAIL tell you to look in there? Shouldn't be too hard to write the dialogue for.

Is this mod compatible with the latest version of the game?
And can races other than the Kineptic use their spells?

  7. endertrot

I use the mod, though I haven't played a kineptic character since cheerful, so I wouldn't know. As for your second question, I've never tried it. Should work, but it might look weird.

  8. rylasasin

Just for lore's sake, can we get a list of every spell the Kineptic lorically have (not just the ones in game) and what they do?

  9. Quilavabom

    Quilavabom Oxygen Tank

Wow, someone actually asking about lore?
The kinds of spells they use are extremely varied, and naming them all would be impossible. Here are some guidelines to follow that will cover the majority of spells:

No telepathy, mind control, or ability to see the future or past.
They have nothing to do with conjuring spirits.
    Kinesis-based.
Energy-type spells like fire, electricity, etc can be generated by expending the user's own metabolic reserves (in the case of glovetech) or from another specifically bound source of energy in the case of machinery.
If controlling matter, the matter must be present; for example: you can't control water that doesn't exist, and you can't create it (practically, anyway).
General-purpose buff spells (healing, strength, the ability to not go splat when running into a wall at highway speeds) exist, but are typically job specific or regulated.

But the most common is basic telekinesis for hovering and speeding up mundane tasks like cleaning and lifting.
They also have utility spells that aren't at all unlike smartphones.

Keep in mind this isn't all inclusive.

First of all, I'd like to say I really like this race mod! Also glad to see another Thaumcraft fan! :nuruhappy:

Though I've been wondering, looking at the description of the Preservation Chamber that makes an excellent "fridge" (oh how GREAT it would be to cook some ribs and have it hot and still fresh months later!) or seed storage, if the technology used for that can also used by the Kineptic keep beings in stasis like a better cyro tube that doesn't have to freeze the whiskers off poor Mr. Bigglesworth? Come to think of it, what would happen if you shoved someone into there? Like say for quite a few years? Semi-related, with their beds reminding me a little of that old Stargate movie's healing sarcophagi, I now wonder about their medical tech and methods too. (been playing too much Space Station 13 lately really...)

Also the flavor text with their Pulse "spells" suggests to me that the Kineptic tend to undergo cybernetic enchancements with their hands. Getting your glovetech modules installed being something like a rite of age with how prominent they seem to be? Unless there's variants out there that are purely external? (which I doubt due to how it draws from the user's metabolism.)

I do get alot of Twili from LoZ: Twilight Princess vibes off their general structure/doorway/furniture aesthetic hehe. For some reason I visualize their "Guardian" deity to be that of a giant floating hand in the sky... :nurugasp:

So any other nifty little pieces of tech, furniture, or culture we haven't already seen in-game that you were thinking about? Like the Avali love to make music as a part of their culture, Kineptic seem to have a love of the culinary arts from what I gather chatting with random NPCs in my travels. Do they use the same old fire everyone else does to cook their meals, have some sorta device with crystals, or use their glovetech? Just random tidbits I'm curious about.

And lastly, what kind of planet is Nepet overall (can be before or after the world's ecological collapse)? I guess since their towns primarily appear in desert planets that their world is one of a warmer climate, or that they just prefer warmer locales?

Sorry for the long list of inquiries, and weird ones at that too! (I tend to think too much into these kinds of things). Or if they've already been answered somewhere ingame/in this thread. Thanks for the mod and your time! :nuruhappy:

Wait, what? I must be missing something, I'm also a fan of thaumcraft, though I really don't get that vibe from the mod. Thaumcraft just feels like pure dungeon punk, while the kineptic just seem like ancient astronauts, like the asgardians in Thor. Maybe its just me.
Oooh, yes, please Quilvabloom! My guess was that they were on a Penumbra world from Frakin' universe, due to all the black and blue.

  12. Quilavabom

    Quilavabom Oxygen Tank

Thaumcraft yes. I love the way magic is handled in it. I also like how "thaumaturge" means "wonder worker" instead of "wizard" or "sorcerer". This title certainly would be more fitting of the kineptic than "magician", and as such I've adopted the term. I'm just too lazy/unmotivated to updated all the info and stuff right now =w=.

Alright, preservation chamber. You could probably use it that way, but would you really want to? Would you be psychologically prepared to now be biologically younger than your little brother, or miss out watching your kittens get their glove license, or come out to learn that your parents died a year ago? Do you want to risk it breaking down during an interstellar journey, leaving you to die in the emptiness of space? That being said, it does have use for paramedics: you don't have to worry about rushing a victim to a hospital; you can take your time.

Gloves can be both external and minimally invasive. Obviously, the minimally invasive variety operates a bit better, but it's reserved for special circumstances. They will not lop off their paws to replace them with the technology: This only occurs in the event of accidental dismemberment.
As I mentioned before, they do need licenses to use spells. This is analogous to humans and a driver's license. Prior to having full-on gloves, kittens wear mittens until they get past their ADHD on straight-up caffeine phase, at which point they receive a glove with a muscular feedback mechanism to operate a mechanical thumb and fingers, but it cannot operate spells.

Any resemblance to LoZ is coincidental; I've never played any of the games.

Considering hands can be used to cover something and protect it, this makes sense. They also view the Guardian as a guide and, since hands are capable of pointing to destinations, this also makes sense. However, they only use this to represent their Guardian's concept. They don't know exactly what he looks like.

My current focus in the story is in the past; I haven't given a whole lot of thought to modern society beyond the basics. Currently they've got the concept of staves functional on a rudimentary level and lack the knowledge required for miniaturization of the components into a single portable, modular device.

Their culinary affinity is a reference to my dad and brother. My dad does a lot of cooking, and my brother arranges his meals in such a way that makes you begin to understand why the heck people post pictures of what they're eating on the internet.
Kineptic cook with whatever is appropriate. A smoked meal would be cooked over burning wood charcoal, but for things like boiling water or frying an egg would employ some kind of direct heating spell.

Nepet is very earthlike, but more mineral-rich. Mountain ranges are described as glittering, and cliff faces often have large crystaline vein growths exposed. Many trees grow solid shells of nutrients around their fruit in place of rinds. Bioluminescent petals are common. Other than that, you could expect many of the views there to be like what you'd see on earth. Well, besides Catari, the planet's natural satellite. Unlike our gray moon, Catari is described as being colorful.

I don't mind the questions; they're fun to answer.

Ah cool, thanks for the answers! Also KITTI made me smile, she's got alot more personality than most other ship AIs.

And a minor suggestion I'd make is to add in recipes at the Sculpting Plinth for crafting the Glitch large/small stones that I see in NPC Kineptic towns. (I know there's probably mods out there for that, but having options is always great I think; that and I wish the stock races had their own proper racial crafting recipes for furniture and blocks like the Avali do.) :nuruhappy:

I think I found what is causing guards to implode on themselves when approached.
In the guard.config.patch it says "swordwarning1" "swordwarning2" and "swordwarning3" when I think it should be "weaponwarning1" and so forth

Hi, I'm in the middle of making an extended dialog mod for custom races (since the default conversations are getting quite boring when you use different races and get the same results), and the Kineptic is planned to be in it. I still have a ton of dialog to go through though, and I could use your help in writing a line or two. (That means you too, Kineptic fans! Not just the mod-maker!)
    More details: thread link
And oh, feel free to delete this post if it gets too spam-y. I'm gonna post this on each included race's discussion page.
Thanks for reading this, at least!

Oh, this sounds fun. I might have to hurry up and progress the lore form the late ancient era so I can form a more solid idea of what starbound-era kineptic society would be like. At the rate I'm going, it should only take about a year :p

The stuff in the mod is very... makeshift. Who they are and how they behave has transformed quite a bit. I've even redacted some things due to... unintended perceptions. Eating isn't as heavily emphasised, and I'm going to be dropping the title of "magician" for "thaumaturge", which inherently implies wonders and miracles instead of magic and sorcery which can include things like voodoo, curses, conjuration, etc (all of which they reject).

In light of this, it might not be a good idea to put a ton of effort into this part of your project at this point in time... Many things are still suject to change, y'know? Send me a private message if you want to discuss it a bit more :3

Are there any good mods you'd personally recommend to add to the Kineptic experience?

(Outside of Frackin Universe. ... because who doesn't run that mod?)

In particular, any good "magic"/"spell" mods that add attacks close to what you'd expect a Kineptic to have?

None that I know of. I haven't touched starbound in months. I guess the arcane add on would be the closest thing, but even then it's only a semblance.

Arcane isn't compatible with Giraffe though.

    Anyone else have any suggestions?

If you are running Frackin Universe, Bog worlds are also a good option to check. In fact, I often find it first on bog worlds way ahead of finding it on desert worlds.
