Here is my submission, the Kid Mimic. Meeting this monster could start out with a quest. You find a girl who seems very upset, but she won't seem to move from her spot or listen to you. She keeps muttering about "Tina", and how she lost her somewhere nearby. You find out that Tina was a teddy bear from locals or a diary. When you finally track down the location of the bear, you find out that it has been destroyed. You return to the child and give her the news, and she loses it. She throws back her head and her face becomes exposed: It is a brilliant hole. Tendrils burst out from its face, forming into long, crab-like legs. As the legs form, it flips itself over and the child's body balances awkwardly on top. On the bottoms of her feet are its eyes. It uses four legs for locomotion and two of them for stabbing and slapping players away. Image one is of the child form. It keeps its face hidden to hold in its legs. Image two is part of the transformation and the final form. The eyes can be given expression by tilting her feet. Her body is still intact on top, and could flail around during attacks or flinching. Image three is a top view of the monster, to show its legs off.
But being serious now, the thing isn't the most original of concepts, but god how I'd love to encounter one of these in game. Suddently that feeling of being safe just vanishes as you see the little kid turn into a creature like that.
Yeah, I know it's not original in the slightest, but I wanted to make it something that could easily tie in with a quest line. Super railroaded. =V
But hey, don't get me wrong, I didn't mean to slender. And originality isn't all, if the concept is well presented or approach the idea in an interesting way. Mimics in general are pretty cool if not cheap creatures in games. Goddamn chests biting my face when I try to get the loot
Oh god, that "thing" looks damn creepy, but to be honest I really like it. I'm really in for some creepy monsters in starbound!
At least there isn't a treasure box popping out of her face. =D But yeah, I basically read about the contest and came up with an idea within twenty minutes. I might have been able to come up with something else if I had waited, but I liked the drawing that I came up with. Sadly, a lot of the things I want to do are fairly high on the horror scale. A lot of blood and guts doesn't really seem that appropriate for Starbound.
Thats the part I think you got it right. I'm pretty sure bloody and gorey creatures/scenarios wouldnt fit Starbound much. The Kid Mimic is damn creepy but does not overdo as much as other submissions/concepts would. Still, good luck on the contest. Having a mimic ingame would be pretty fun, specially this one.
It could work, it does remind me of the Witch from Left 4 Dead 2- DON'T MESS WITH THE WITCH. Seriously, one of the things I loved about Left 4 Dead 2 was the fact that avoiding the Witch at all costs was a serious issue, and I love seeing enemies that... well, quite frankily, you REALLY don't want to piss off. While it may be a little dark for the game, I do like the idea, and think you have a good concept here.
It's probably because it starts out as a girl that is sitting around and crying. Witches are mostly obstacles, in that you have to stay quiet and far away from it, which can be a pain if a swarm of zombies decides to show up. My monster is designed more like a quest chain; you are actively trying to get her to transform to fight her.
coolest mimic ive ever seen, with all these monster ideas even if some one doesn't win there monster could be in the game, you never know, like what if the devs are getting dry on ideas they can just refer back to this contest, its like a gold mine of ideas. sorry for ranting on your post lol
Thanks! I'm not sure if the devs will specifically add other monsters from this contest. It would seem kind of mean if they took ideas from other people, but didn't award anything. I suppose the could subconsciously create monsters from what they've seen during this contest, though.
