Key bindings need to be a thing as soon as possible. As a dvorak user i'm glad that they had the keymap default to qwerty so at least the key locations are the same, but the keys are not what it says they are.
Once you squash any major bugs keeping people from playing, please add key remapping. I'm not left handed, but play my games as such and at 42 it's to late to change. I haven't touched Cube World for this very issue. Plus, jumping using thumb feels so awkward . Thanks for all the hard work.
I can't agree with the concept of anti-WASD (excluding other layouts such as Dvorak that is. The basic layout itself has been used since the late 90s and with very good reason.) That said, as has been mentioned, there are other keyboard layouts. There are also other reasons why certain keys might need to be remapped. For instance, the image attached shows the "gamepad" I play games with. It not only is more comfortable and works better, but it allows me to play games like these with a keyboard that implements Dvorak in hardware without having to switch back and forth or remap absolutely everything. Still, a lot of things that are used frequently and sometimes needed in a hurry are still somewhat inaccessible (for example, when I need to dig through the inventory for a particular healing item, weapon, or etc in a fight and need to be very quick about it, I can't even get TO the inventory...) I actually find the Z/X layout to be kind of awkward for the center buttons (yet they are the most useful when one can actually use them) but if they were, for instance Q/E that would be beautiful. (I prefer to use F for interact with objects in games and it would be perfect here as well.)
Some of us have started playing before wasd has become the de facto standard and came up with their own and for them better layout when they made the transition to mouse+keyboard (e.g. during quake1). And of course there are different language layouts and left-handed people who really need the ability to remap the keys. As a workaround i recommend http://www.autohotkey.com/ to change the keys.
Not a lefty but seconding this suggestion. I'm very accustomed to playing games with arrow keys instead of WASD and it would be nice to have the option to toggle between the two.
this is really unexcusable ..sure this is beta and all, but key rebinding is so basic you dont even consider it not being in. please make a statement on the steampage saying this is missing. i'd never had bought this now if i knew this was lacking. and 'i' for inventory ..please, that doesnt suit anyone, leftie or not...
And that's the part that confuses me. I started out PC gaming back in the late 80s and followed the games as they went and have never found any layout that could beat the comfort and advantages of WASD. I've found that the direction arrows as we tended to use before WASD in fact can actually be physically bad for the hands due to their shape and size (especially on some keyboards, but even on the ones that do them right.) Other keyboard layouts, left-handed people, and etc I can understand, but the basic layout itself really does seem to be just about the best you could do. I held out as long as I could, but by 1999 or so (Unreal namely) I finally gave up and adapted. If you've held on for this long, it's maybe time... This game will be configurable later on (probably sooner rather than later) but there are more and more games these days that can't because most devs are getting really lazy and using crap like that Microsoft XNA Framework (which truly ticks me off because you can't use any gamepad but a 360 gamepad with their crap even though if it supported standard input methods it would support a 360 gamepad as well in the process... But, more on track of this point, you also can't configure the keyboard keys on those games.) That said, as discussed, there are several keys that still NEED to be rebound and other layouts/handedness to consider, so no matter how you look at it it still needs configuration sooner rather than later.
I just want to use the keyboard with the right hand. Using WASD with the right hand is dumb because your thumb is barely useful and you have to hit space with your wrist. I play all my games with OKL; which basically duplicates the convenience of WASD for my right hand - thumb on space bar, couple more useful button by the pinky finger. And yes it means I usually end up remapping weapons 1-4 to 7-0 in games like Planetside 2.
Since you, a developer, chimed in here. explain WHY we can't rebind keys? I paid for the game and I can't play/test it properly because of this. I NEED to use the Arrow Keys and those around them. I'm feeling kind of slighted here as a new Southpaw customer and there's no refunds on Steam... not that I want a refund, I want to PLAY THE GAME that I BOUGHT and you're not providing me the means to comfortably do so.
Thanks for that hint. Found the option. *moves the game out of the eternal sleep category* I think throwing me right in the tutorial threw me off a bit.
WE NEED KEY REMAPPING NAOW! (aka Tonight's update) Or else my lefty friend will storm Tiy's house with torches, pitchforks, and "flaming genitals". (This is all his words) He really wants to play badly, and he doesn't want to re-map his keys every time. So, hopefully, tonight's update. EDIT: Uhh...you're talking to a Wanderlust dev. He's not part of the Starbound team... Just saying.
Whoops, did not know that. Not familiar with who's who around here, just that I bought this game because it looked like fun and I can't play it because of this. My previous points stand of course, wrong developer not withstanding, heh.
Another lefty here, do you guys hate lefties or something? We can't play your game. Another vote for "I wish I hadn't bought it yet"
I, too, am a lefty that would appreciate key re-mapping. That being said, I am hobbling along with the current controls and really enjoying the game.
I just can't stand self entitled 'customers' like you. Ill answer your question why you cannot rebind the keys: It's BETA. If that core functionality is not in the game (yet) you can expect it to be implemented later before RELEASE. If it is not in by then you can don your software crusader gear and start demanding. Until then be nice and have patience.
It's not self-entitlement when it's something that should be a no-brainer to integrate even earlier than Beta in development, especially when you decide to offer early access purchases to interested customers who want to play and help test for bugs. Not everyone in the world is right-handed or has full use of either hand. Some people with disabilities that want to play also need key remapping. It's basic accessibility options. We're both irritated and bummed because we were just as on-board as the rest of you to support this game and help weed out bugs until we booted it up and found the keys are hard-fixed for right-handed people only.
