Keeping Track of Planets

I'm enjoying the Beta so far, but I hope to one day see a system that allows us to keep track of where we've been and let us make notes of anything remarkable on planets we've made landfall.

I don't know if this is already an idea to be implemented or if someone has suggested it already, it's just a feature I would love to have.

maybe after landing on a planet you could give it a nickname

I think the ability to save planets with a tag, something to let you return easily to multiple locations would be very handy and may actually aid in making the proposition of making one planet a home planet a tad more appealing.

I was just thinking about this. I'd like to be able to keep a log of planets in-game, you'd be able to open it up in the nav. console and select a planet from a list of saved ones. You would be able to save a planet while you're on it, tagging it with a name and description.

P.S. this thread feels like it should belong in Mechanics.

Yes, I'd like to be able to tag/mark planets that I've been too and list what services or landmarks I found when I visited that particular planet. I would also like to see a favorite list so I could easily fly back and forth between my home planet and an arms dealer.

I think this is a pretty important topic. Some people won't care because they fly to a planet for the intention of pillaging it and moving on. But others will want to build things in various places, and want to know how to return there later. This will especially become important, I think, for players who reach Sector X (assuming that's the last sector), and may stop simply grinding and do more exploring and building.

I would love this feature. Especially for your home world, claiming a planet as your's and then naming it should go hand and hand. Maybe even be able to rename solar systems and naming constellations.

Very much so, I have the urge to go on different planets and build entire cities, but I feel like going through so many I lose track of them all. My only solution in game would be to stick to nearby planets without venturing too far into the maze of solar systems.

Well it has to do with mechanics and planets specifically, so I don't see why it can't be here.

Having a log of planets that you can name, nickname, or leave as default would be very handy.

It's like making seeds on Minecraft, you name the different worlds, except for Starbound it'd be a mechanic aboard your ship, keeping track of the places you want. Or at least organize the planets in some form.

That would be lovely, being able to make note of planets with specific vendors/villages/etc upon them.

Meh, I don't want to pillage and forget a planet. I want to explore everyone I can, make note of what's there, especially if it's something useful or something I made there and isn't my home planet. I don't want to build on just one planet.

Me too. We are very much in agreement.

Yes. And for any argument against it. I could write down the planet coordinates outside of the game and it comes down to I shouldn't have to do it outside the game.

I was just thinking about this. And also maybe have planets that you can favorite.
I'm glad I decided to search this before posting a new thread myself. :)

Yeah, this would be a great feature! I've kept my own record in a .txt file but it would be so cool to have it right in the game. I used to play StarPort: Galactic Empires, which I think is a great example of the kind of map functionality we need. You could put colored marks on your starmap and label them and keep notes.

List of tagged planets in the navigation panel and I'm on it. You could click on a list entry and it zooms automatically to that position.
A planet, which is placed in planetary-folder could be added with a meta-information called tagname or so (this will not cause any trouble, when the planetary-folder or single files are removed later while whiping in Beta or by players funny mind). While opening the navigation panel the planets meta-data could be searched through and listed on a clickable favourite-list alphabetically sorted (or sorted by sector, then alphabetically).

    // Clickable List //
    Α Homeworld
    Α My first secret garden
    Β Friends villa
    Γ My little cave
    Δ Fuel depo
    Χ Friends Homeworld
    Χ Homeworld
    Χ Hylotl to sstab
    Χ Lovely floran town

You click on a list-entry, f.e. "Β Friends villa" and the navigation screen will move to that location with the planet selected, coordinates updated, that you just need to push the GO-button.

    Would loooove it (!)

It'd be cool if you could 'bookmark' and label certain coordinates.
