Keeping NPCs in their places / houses

So, today I found a glitch castle right around 10 blocks from spawn. I wanted it badly and the NPCs inside it too. Carefully.. I kill all the hostile guards and only have three of the non-hostile NPCs died (due to I chase them out and they fall to poison pool :( ) then close all exits with blocks.

Sometimes tho, these NPCs decide to runaway from me or just randomly wander out of castle... so I need a solution to keep them in. The dirt wall surely the easiest workaround, but it is ugly xD ... I also made a high ramp on my previous house to keep the chef from going out of house, that works.

Any other ideas to keep these NPCs in their buildings? :D

Kill them, prop them up in their chairs.

You won't even notice, they are robots.

Locks.. Childproof your doors! This solution requires wiring..

I definitely think NPCs need a way to stay where they belong. I thought Terraria did it fine, where the NPCs would wander around but usually gravitate back towards their set homes.

As for a way to keep them in, some sort of wall seems like the best solution. Maybe you could make some sort of glass "Air Dome" around your house so it's a physical wall but still looks sort of good? You'd need a lot of glass, though.

I just wish there was a way to protect NPCs in hectic situations without the possibility of accidentally hitting them. Had a whole Glitch castle and surround villages get mad at me because I accidentally whacked a guard while we were trying to save a few civilians from a monster onslaught....:wut:

If you're far enough into playing you can just craft the wiring tool and link all the doors to a control panel. Activate the control panel so that all the doors remain locked. That's what I did to keep an NPC inside an interrogation room I built.

Oh god... This reminds me of the facility I found that seemed to have no purpose other than jailing and torturing Floran. It was awful, the Floran were so far gone from being kept alive by dried sap and not getting meat, that they tried to attack and eat me while I was freeing them. Did I bother to mention that I'm Glitch? They had destroyed those poor Floran's minds. I don't even know what race it was that was jailing them... I'd have to find a dna sample from their smears on the floor.:lod:

It was the Florans jailing them.

Armed Floran jailers, and Floran prisoners with shivs. If you inspect the area your character will even point out it's a floran prison with floran torture devices.

Of course... That is how they knew how to keep them alive with only the dried sap. Sick bastards. I tried inspecting a few of the torture devices, but that is all my Glitch said about them, and that he didn't want to imagine what they are used for... Species always seem to treat themselves the worst.

I would really like a "peaceful" toggle that stops me from being able to hit NPC's that aren't currently hostile to me. This was one of the things I always hated about Skyrim/Fallout too; I would like to defend people but hit detection is so all over the place that a glancing blow on an NPC causes the entire village to rise against me despite my best intentions.

Other than extremely ugly/out of place walls and inefficient/unrealistic control panels, your villagers will stupidly run across the planet and die.

It's a shame, really. So much fun could be had making little villages and the like.

Lock them in using wire and doors perhaps?
Oh well, there we are, beat me to it.

That seems like the most logical, unobtrusive way.
