Yo, wassup. This is my first post on the forums. I'm some dude who plays Starbound, but you probably already knew that. Alright, I'll stop jabbering now and start talking about the thing I wanted to talk about. So, um, I noticed in the UG update they added attacking sounds, referred to the game as "grunts". Cool, cool. I like it. You know what I like the most about it? You can not only change what they are, you can change how many you have. So even though each race has two grunting sounds default, I could give them 1000 if I wanted to. Awesome! But, then there's the hit sounds, referred to the game as "ouch noises". So, these noises have been around for a while, and there's one thing that bugs me about them. You can only have one for each race and gender of the race. And I know why. It's because the ouch noises are referred to in the game's source as a string. Whereas the grunt noises are a string LIST, likely because the grunt noises are newer and the devs know more efficient ways to do things now. For those of you who don't know, a string list allows multiple variables. A string does not. I think. Or something like that. Now, I'm just throwing this fact out here to the devs, I hope they see it. I just want them to make the ouch noises a string list rather than a string, like the grunt noises. It'd be cool, because I roleplay in Starbound A whole heck of a lot. And part of the enjoyment for me in that is replacing the sounds with sounds that actually resemble the voice of the character I'm roleplaying as. So I've got the grunts. But no ouch. So, I just thought I'd let the devs know. I hope you all see this, guys and girls. Because from what I can tell, it should be a REALLY easy fix. Just place "List" in front of string, you know? Not trying to push you to do it or anything, I'm just making sure you know of this problem. I mean, you must not, right? Otherwise you would have fixed it, I would think. I dunno. Thanks for reading this. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, it's my first post.
Indeed. This would fix that! I've checked the files and they already have 3 ouch noises per race. So even if you don't have your own, this would still get rid of the redundancy of the ouch sounds. But for me, I've got a ton of sounds to use, so it would be even more useful to me. Also, thanks for sharing your opinion on this! I appreciate it. Let's hope they change it in the next patch, hmm?
I was thinking the same thing! I love the editions they've made to the grunts, it makes your character feel much more alive while playing, but the single "ouch" kinda throws it off, especially when you're under a status effect like fire. I would LOVE to see multiple "ouch noises" added in an upcoming patch. Especially since this game has so many opportunities to benefit from this with its extremely diverse race mods. This post has my utmost approval! We're looking at you with starry eyes, Chucklefish! @w @
I'm glad you support this idea! Thank you. And you're right about the race mods, that's what I was thinking. I would REALLY benefit as well with my library of grunt and ouch sounds... But I can only use the grunt ones! Luckily it's a really easy fix from what I can tell, by looking at the source code. So I'm thinking it isn't too much longer until it's fixed.
I don't think it's that the devs "know more efficient ways" to do things. It's because it's standard issue in games to have one hit sound and several attack sounds, on the grounds that you'll be attacking more often than you'll be getting hit and one attack sound would get old very fast. For this reason, the game chooses a random sound from a string list for attacking, but only expects one sound for taking damage. Either way, making the hit sounds a string list and just leaving only one item in the list wouldn't hurt anybody.
Hmm, I disagree with you. I have NEVER come across a game, besides this one, that has only one hit sound but several attacks sounds. The usual way I find it is that there's several of both sounds, or none of both sounds. Plus, if you check the sound files you'll find that they did indeed record more than one hit sound for each race! So I still do believe it's them figuring out new ways to code, otherwise they would only have recorded one sound for each race. Either that or they changed their minds on multiple hit sounds, but I don't see why they would do that. Nevertheless, I like your suggestion of just changing it to a string list and leaving it at that. But while they're at it, why not include those additional sounds they already recorded into the string list? It's the same idea of just copy paste text a few times...
