A pocket dimension complete with trading post, eh? And other gates will allow travel to and from it? More or less a "subspace hub" then.

I very much like this development. Gonna call this pocket dimension the Sub Hub now. Or maybe the Shub.

Will there be other planets and structures inside the Shub?

So basically the old multiplayer station hub just with a new map?
That old station map would still be awesome to find somewhere for those who would recognize it...

All this talk of stargate and others, what this actually reminded me of was Pohls Gateway. Basic story was humanity finds a station floating in our solar system with thousands of identical ships docked. All the ships have preprogrammed coordinates in them for distant worlds. The scientists figure out enough of the controls for "send" and "return" that they can start sending explorers out and back with the ships, so its kinda like a lottery. Pilots usually find nothing but those who discover a habitable world or usable resources get to retire disgustingly wealthy. Of course some dont come back at all but hey, thats just the way the galactic dice roll. It makes for a nice "people find space travel before being ready for it" setting.

Sounds amazing. Does this mean that any time you go through any gate it will take you to the same outpost? So any changes you make to the outpost asteroid will be there when you go through another gate?

Keep up the amazing work. Can't wait for you guys to start working on the Novakids.

I think would be nice if the asteroid was a meeting area for all the galactic explorers. A pvp area would be nice but inside de town... No fights. They have guards that will fight for the order...

I like that idea. The prospect of cantina brawls as well as cantinas makes me enjoy going to work every day.

The Hub would have to be impervious to building, though, for multiplayer reasons. Hundreds of players going to the same place, you're bound to have several of those hundreds wanting to destroy everything and build "masculinity idols" in their place.

Ok just to try to make sense of this progression:

Tier 1: First planet, no space travel. Prey to your respective god(s) that you didn't get a hostile weather effect. Collect materials, repair ship. Fuel up.

Tier 2: Interplanetary travel, but no interstellar travel. Do quests to gain resources and such to get to what it takes to achieve FTL travel again.

Tier 3: Travel the galaxy doing... things... < Where I see progression options forking away from eachother.

I think it would make more since to scavenge shipwrecks found in asteroid fields for parts and/or mine a special ore that only occurs on moons and asteroid fields.

    Oh shit stargaaaaaaaaaate

*ahem*. This tidbit of story seems a bit random in that delightful way.

Love how you just casually strolls right into an interdimensional gate that could very well smack you against an asteroid facefirst, because why wouldn't you?

This sounds incredible. And a lot like a certain Dr Who episode that I've seen before.

Oh, please include references to that ep, and at least one insane character who speaks in riddles and refers to herself as "Sexy"

A couple of other people have asked this, but is this outpost going to replace the randomly generated outposts currently in the nightly. My ship layout is mostly made of scavenged outpost bits and I don't really want to rip apart a static location.

Other than that it sounds brilliant.

Yes. It'd be awesome to see players rewarded for actually building and modifying worlds instead of just the usual looting and killing things, or even stereotypical fetch quests and the like.

I'm not sure if it's a wise idea to allow players to build stargates. If this is eventually allowed, then it should be one of the most expensive, difficult, highest-tiered objects to build in the entire game. Why suck all the fun out of exploring worlds in the hopes of finding another stargate by allowing anyone to easily build their own wherever and whenever they like?

It should require many thousands of pixels and built from various component objects which require rare or hard to obtain materials like impervium and lots of matter blocks. And - most definitely - it should be impossible until you suceed in a chain of quests for the residents of this pocket dimension. I don't think they'd teach just anyone how to build gates to their front doorstep! o_O You'd have to earn their trust. :halo:

Also, I disagree that a player should be allowed to use the stargates to travel without fuel between vast distances. That's cheating! (Go install a fuel mod cheat if you want that.) That's not the purpose of this game addition. It's to have a static location with its own residents and lore, giving players a place to trade, meet and hang out, etc.

And consider the consequences if you allowed players to build their own stargates. Everyone would be building stargate highways to save fuel. Remember how hilarious that sounded in Douglas Adam's books? That's just silly.

If the devs suddenly removed this most beloved feature that so many enjoy, you can expect they'd get more than an earful from disgruntled players. I would expect such a move to be almost as hotly debated as the recent Glitch ship avatar debacle. :speechless:

There's nothing wrong with the "Teleport Home" option. The only way they could improve this is if they redesigned the ship's teleporter sytem to be tiered, like all the other progression stuff, and only unlock the "Teleport Home" feature at the highest tier.

(For suggestions on how the devs could have teleporter tiers/progression, see player comments in the GeorgeV Super News: 21st of May thread. In particular, my post here summarizes my take on how Teleport Home could be tiered.)

Limiting the functionality of stargates by the distance between them? You do realize that they all connect to the same extra-dimensional pocket... right? That sounds too complicated for players, anyway.

And now it sounds like your describing a real-time strategy game, like Starcraft, Red Alert, etc. To allow players to literally conquer worlds, manage worldwide resources, build armies, etc... That'd change this into an entirely different game.

Starbound is, first and foremost, a sandbox adventure game set in space. It's a bit too late for the devs to change the genre, after the Kickstarter and so many have bought into a sandbox game. To drastically change gameplay like that now would come across as a betrayal to many.:sparta::viking::fireball:

Personally, I'm happy with the way Starbound is now. Many have compared it to other games, like Terreria. But I think it is nicely unique and fits a particular niche.

That said, I'm not entirely against player influence and control. For example, I think the Colonies mod is pretty awesome. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this incorporated into vanilla. (Though, I'll have to see how severedskullz's version 2.0 turns out.)

I could maybe go along with a sort of popularity thing. That is: If you do enough for the local inhabitants, like quests, eliminating bosses and threats, building up the local economy, attracting colonists, etc, then you could get elected as planetary governor or "planet defender" or something. Maybe get something of a salary as long as you reside there? Maybe collect a local sales tax?

Alternatively, maybe have some way for players to literally invest in a planet's infrastructure? Maybe a stock market? Or save our pixels in a "Free Trader's Bank" located on the aforementioned extra-dimensional asteroid, perhaps earning a small (~1%) interest?
