Separator, Accelerator, Manipulator ... Cerulium, Violium, Aegisalt, Ferozium, Rubium, Impervium... Being in the second half of my life's century I just hope the game will get released before the old age kicks in and I can't remember that stuff anymore. Sounds like a walk though a chemist's shop already.

I like that "glass cannon" thing though - I play one in D3 and I am curious how it will turn out here. Nice update as always, thanks!

A lot of this looks like it's the answer to a long-dead thread I made in the suggestion forums about horizontal progression in armor.

    Here:http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/horizontal-progression-with-armor.72836/

Of course I realize the chance that the devs actually read this and ran with it is about zero, but the point of it all is.

    I approve of this.

    A lot.

This will be something beautiful someday.

Thanks for the update! I really like the idea of armours that compliment different playstyles, but I do have a few concerns:

    - What will happen to the existing high-tier armour models in the current version of the game? Will any be re-used for the new progression plan or will they all simply be removed from the game? There are some attractive models in game at the moment that I'd rather not see removed.

    - Further to the above question, how about racial armour variants? Are those staying in or going away? I recall a mention a while back of racial armour bonuses - has that idea been scrapped, or will those bonuses be on top of whatever the chosen armour style (Separator/Accelerator/Manipulator) provides?

    - This development seems to greatly shorten the path of progression. Does this mean we will see less opportunity to improve our capabilities than in the current version of the game? Because to me that sounds like a step backward, not forward. Some clarification would be appreciated here!

    - I'd like to echo Mackinz here when they say that Impervium should probably not be used to make glass cannon armour! It doesn't make any sense at all. Impervium would make a lot more sense in conjunction with Aegisalt, from "aegis" for protection, on Separator armour sets, green or black. All that has to be done for it to continue to make sense is to shift everything one space along: give Ferozium and Cerulium to Accelerators for a continuing blue-green theme and leave the Manipulators with Violium and Rubium for a red/purple look. This also means that characters on the same path aren't always gathering the same ore - they need a different "steel" version of a metal than they do the base metal.

    - Also echoing Lecic here in saying that currently the Accelerator and Manipulator sound very, very similar. Some clarification on the differences, please!

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks in advance for your help!

"Glass Cannon" refers to a character that's very powerful in attacking, but can only take minimal amounts of damage This term is commonly attributed to Magic Users who, while extremely powerful, have very few hit points, typically.

Hmm... What if we're given an option of... Light armor, or should I say, plated clothing? So that we can do more with our fabrics!

I won't mind doing a Rubium-plated Spats* for a walking speed increase for my gunner build. The trade-off: impractical to use on the moon, and icy planets (for now)

Will the three parts have multiple upgrades each? Or it would never reach tier 10 I think?

    IOScream Subatomic Cosmonaut

    Seems pretty basic

    Tank, Warrior, Mage.

I'd like to see the Warrior and mage differ by possibly having High/low energy pools with High/low regen, E.G the mage has a huge pool of energy which requires a few minutes to fully recharge without some form of booster (Stimpack/potions things) and the warrior has a decent pool which expends fast, but also recharges fast, meaning their attacks are pretty much constant.

    To simplify further:
Mage: Strong, powerful attacks, either long duration or extremely high damage with a long interlude between
Warrior: Can burst high damage or sustain a medium damage, but regens quickly (Limited to medium-high damage weapons)

Has any thought been given to integrating set bonuses for the various armor types? Mixing and matching is great, but I've always enjoyed the satisfying feeling of plunking that last piece of a badass armor set onto my character. I can see a lot of benefits in integrating this kind of mechanic into late-game armors, at the very least. For one thing, it could remove tech's monopoly on giving the player new and unique abilities (since at the moment, tech is pretty much the only practical thing worth searching chests for). It would also be a nice addition to the loot tables of bosses/minibosses... better than the flimsy plasma pistols or green axes they always seem to drop these days.

EDIT: I just realized that someone will inevitably bring up the racial set-bonuses... I'm talking about something rarer and more unique for high-tier sets.

I really like the idea of having three different paths that the player can take, but I think it would be better if each metal had three different sets for each race. That way, you'll have three different sets to choose from for each metal ranging from iron all the way to impervium, but impervium would still be the best armor, just with three different variants of it.

EDIT: As a few others have already mentioned, will we also be seeing racial abilities integrated with the class specific armor sets?

Yeah, being able to find unique armor sets with cool abilities and such would be nice. There's already a couple of interesting augments (albeit incomplete) in the game assets like absorbing and reflecting damage, forcefields and energy shields, spikes, reduced fall damage and explosive damage, etc. Seeing these kinds of things on armor sets that aren't tied to any specific race would be really cool.

    1. It's great that you're a psychic. How, exactly, do you know this is the case?
    2. False. It's a direct copy of the Knight, Ranger, Mage archetype setup with the ability to mix and match. Y'know. The setup used in every RPG ever. Might as well accuse Terraria of copying, at least in concept, The Elder Scrolls series, hundreds of mmos including early MapleStory, La Tale, Grand Chase, etc., Kingdoms of Amalur, Secret of Mana to an extent (Edit: Might be remembering wrong on this one. Either way, still think the others prove my point.), and God knows what else. Heck, I bet it's a trope on TV Tropes somewhere. Your accusation has, literally, no impact on their ability to use this archetype setup because it's something far too many people have done. Sure, it'd be nice if they didn't use something so cliche, but, even so, Terraria didn't invent this system. Two similar genres using a similar cliche in a similar way isn't heresy...
    3. For the most part, that's entirely unrelated. Race specific bonuses and archetype tier progression are two different things, and, with the very easily editable system Starbound has, can be added in and balanced at different times.
    4. While I can't argue with you there too much, why're bringing this up and stating it so negatively? Armor sets and bonuses for confining yourself to them were not mentioned. For all we know, they could use no set bonuses. Or they could make set bonuses apply as a +% to stats when using the same tier of gear. Not the same archetype, mind you, the same tier. So, tier 1 ranged, tier 1 melee, and tier 1 magic would give you +10% to their stats, as a quick and dirty example of what I mean. But all of this is irrelevant until we have some knowledge about sets. I mean, heck, if we want to argue in negative 'If's, how about... What if you killed someone? Well we should lock you up in jail. We should keep you there so you don't do anything bad. We should prevent you from making any changes so that you won't kill anyone. 'Cause. Y'know. What if? Just like how they should scrap this totally terrible idea because what if their sets are restrictive? /sarcasm
    5. Once more, it's great that you're a psychic.
    6. Okay, seriously, where the heck are you getting this info? Where are these assumptions coming from? I'd honestly like to know, because I have a feeling that you're pulling them from nowhere, but if you aren't, I'd like to at least know what you know so that maybe I can see something other than assumptions and ridiculous accusations. And if you are making assumptions here, then what you've provided isn't constructive criticism, it isn't suggestions, it's you blindly saying, "This won't work," to a system you haven't seen the finer details to as you accusingly bring up unrelated subjects. It's pure, unadulterated cynicism, and it's not going to help make this game better.

However, I can see what you're trying to get at, if these are indeed assumptions. Allow me to rephrase what you said in a manner that asks for info, rather than "Nyagh nyagh, this is bad, and you should scrap it because I made assumptions."

What will the early game be like? Will we get more interesting armor that will provide bonuses to our playstyle, or will it be linear at first?
I can't help but notice that this is similar to Terraria's setup in some ways. Are you going to do anything more interesting and original with it, or are you going to stick with the cliche for simplicity's sake?
What about racial armor bonuses? How will those factor into this? Will there be rebalancing down the line, or will you be including those with this update?
What about armor sets and set bonuses? Can you give us more info on how you'll be implimenting those, if at all?
I'd like to be able to play a mage from the start. Will you be making magic more accessable in some manner?
(Last one is irrelevant, see Novakids and their gunsmithing abilities.)

Looks like it really is shaping up to be terraria in space. Sans the belt items to diversify your characters. Watered down game play here we come!
I don't think the generic 3 archtypes really existed in SoM. At least, not to a point where it mattered.

high damage but low health and/or armor. Glass cannon is used for because a cannon is seen as doing alot of damage and the glass basically means easily breakable or low health/defense which in this case low defense.

I like this idea, though I have no idea how the melee armor will manage, I think I'll try mixing and matching first.
