After reading over the other suggestions, here are a few additional suggestions I care to offer. - An ancient library, which could contain new lore, and/or offers a wider array of books. It could potentially be guarded by NPCs. - A specialty merchant, who sells rare or unique items of a certain theme (swords, armor, consumables, etc.) . Maybe they could sell blueprints or materials for particularly rare or fancy items, and players can work toward making 'em themselves. - Golem Parts. Either in some ancient, crumbling temple, or an underground grotto with springs and mossy stones, the players can discover a special container that holds a Golem Part. Once a player gets all the parts they need, they can go to a crafting table (existing or new, whatever) and create a friendly Golem NPC. A golem could be just a glorified guard with more health and defense, or maybe a tech that conjures a golem to fight along side of you. - An underground lake. Not some of these pools we've seen, but an actual, huge lake. There could be an unique tile set for the stones and background, aquatic plants and such, maybe specialty aquatic animals - maybe even a hylotl hut or two. - A lost citadel that belongs to an order of penguin knights that ride armored polar bears. A few of their order may still persist, guarding it. - A hidden restaurant that sells meals rather then the base foods. Maybe offers a quest that can give an uncommon/rare meal recipe as a reward, too. - A stony grotto filled with statues. Or are they petrified adventurers? Dun-dun-dun!
If I were digging really deep underground, it would be really neat to find "Eden Grounds", which would be mystical caverns with silent monks. Special music that sounds super peaceful yet mysterious would play while you're in there, and there would be rare plants which would aid in health benefits like boosting speed, recovery, defense, etc. Presumably, they'd be grown by the monks.Any monsters that spawn in there would be peaceful by default.
This maybe off subject but through out the adventures on Starbound I have in-countered Floran houses and such but they had these gigantic pods that nothing spawned out of and I was wondering will there ever be a thing with monster taming and spawning?
Why not some Canon's? Or references to other Scify stuff underground? Ruins of a stargate / gate room (as mentioned). A certain femme metroid hunter's space ship all beat up deep underground, A Tardis why not! (Wishful thinking!)
I think it could be interesting if there were some humanoid made traps underground. Like some vines that try to grab you, some mines, things you can set off that would cause cave-ins or even some hostile turrets guarding some hidden supply caches.
Old remains of humanity bunkers, civilian bunkers, because we have already saw the USCM bunkers wich are awesome, but we don’t see where live those humans that actually survived from the earth, and I think that deep, secure, bunkers with some kind of automated defense systems will do the trick, but with flashing lights and all rusty, like if it were abandoned. Also this leads me to the next question, is going to be any kind of human city? And maybe micro dungeons, like a big cave, full of bones and old swords/spears with a boss on it, premade bosses, to add something to actually WANT to find, like, I don’t have to kill the “x” boss, but if I do I get that unique head to collect, or that awesome bone sword, you know, a special item that can only be found by killing those bosses, like the human rifle, or the uzis. Another example of it could be some kind of ufo, with aliens inside and when you reach the micro boss it gives you an incredible plasma rifle. Collectives always are cool.
The suggestions in this thread are pretty good, but I can't escape the fact that this stuff spawning "deep underground" really, really bugs me from an immersion perspective. Random stuff miles underground? What the heck? Someone please tell me I'm not the only one irritated by this... I'll repost my argument for @Armagon from yesterday's thread here: Hello, Armagon. I'd like to comment on the idea of a plethora of underground structures. Put simply, I hate it. Anything deep underground makes no logical sense due to realistic concerns about heat, pressure, survival supplies... I understand that you want to encourage underground exploration, but I feel that that would be better accomplished with things that are not structures. I'd love to see structures that are just below the surface, be they ruins of former civilization (Archaeological questing, anyone?) or an active guerilla war base (Questing for peace?), but not structures situated somewhere in the middle of a planets crust with no apparent entry or exit or method of survival beyond the one the player makes. Maybe the ruins of ruins underground (scattered blocks near magma) to simulate what happens at tectonic plates, but not much else in the way of buildings because... It just does not make sense! No one would logically dig that far down then bury themselves in there. Please consider this for the future. Thank you.
There should all of a sudden just be an extremely graphic and gruesome place-that-spawns-on-a-planet with pools of blood (liquid) and dead lootable monsters everywhere. At the very back of the little cave or bunker or whatever, there should just be someone sitting in a shadow facing the wall who sits motionless until you get too close. The expectation of this is after minutes-hours of "la la la digging~ la la la exploring~ " you see this place and you're like ->
This brings me a few thoughts . . . Tile Rendering Fix. Does this mean that people with a semi-potato computer like myself wont lag like a a bitch when there are tons of Shadow effects on screen? And two, the new Aggressive monster coding means that monsters can and will, essentially, chase you forever if they are overly aggressive? This should bring interesting aspects into play, having entire chains of monsters coming after you after you spend an entire planet's surface dodging around them just to get around without bothering to take care of them.
One of the things I feel SB is missing is effective use of Wide open spaces in the underground. A lot of it is complete solid rock, lifeless snake tunnels ( when I say lifeless - i don't mean without alien life - but the lack of ambiance of the tunnels them selves. ) Underground in reality can be extremely beautiful Though many of these pieces can't be made by "Blocks" but could be done through custom environment based objects. Especially the stalactites and underground rock bridges. With water just beneath. Maybe a small rock island in the center of a giant underground pool with special plants which glow. Its really a limitation of the imagination. But would add a lot of scenic ambiance overall. ===== Another great feature set would be an underground City. Deep near the core utilizing the lava flow to power its steam machines could be a city build around the core. Here it could sell rare specific goods such as magmite bars, lava flowers, etc. What ever it is considering the pressure such deep down, the goods here would make great armor pieces at least in the case of protection. Of course the downside would be the equipment sold here would be heavy hence tend to slow down the player. But a understandable sacrifice from speed for protection. Dwarven ruins would also make a great thing to explore. Not exactly dwarven, but ancient underground cities long abandoned. Just tunnels filled with a dark firey brimstone style background. Pools of lava here and there. Buildings erupting from the lava beds over looking its once great empire. Such places would of course need somewhat a custom background to make it feel more at home. The standard rock template wouldn't work here. ===== Other great places would be Underground abandoned temples with references to old gods Deep underground forests with bioillumencent life Abandoned railway track system - leading to a deep underground mine Underground lakes - with a small fish shack. Deep underground Toxic nuclear dump Burried trash storage faciliity Crashed and burried rocket ship ========= Full Pictures: Underground City by TonyMTC http://martanael.deviantart.com/art/Underground-City-65034768 Dwarven Ruins by ArtofJokinen http://artofjokinen.deviantart.com/art/Dwarven-Caverns-Concept-Art-340137516 Final Fantasy a Realm Reborn Concept Art. http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-19/ff14-setting-concept05.html
Waterfalls! I would love to see waterfalls underground! As a side note, what about an underground soundtrack/theme? Its so quiet...
I would like increased rates of finding stuff that is exclusively located underground. It's really danged difficult to hunt down specific underground biomes to begin with, and then they go for miles without a single thing happening that justifies picking over it. Asteroid fields got way more secret stashes, and they're just floating around in oblivion, lol... (also would like more biome chests in general if the sets are going to be given more stuff to work with)
Active/abandoned human Extraterrastrial Combat secret base. With hangars, workshops and half-deconstructed UFO-s . And maybe, also, bosses and agaran study materials.
I'd like to find very large facilities that appear to be abandoned, such as mine shafts or a Lava Pumping Facility (one that sits at the core of a world used to harvest lava for some reason) but upon entering, ghost-like enemies shuffle at you and are resistant to physical attacks. There could also be some story or quests related to exploring underground areas, where a guy asks for dungeon-specific memorabilia or items in exchange for better mining equipment, like that radar I mentioned! (Really, if you want the radar you would be exploring and would need it, but if you don't like exploring you shouldn't need to get it.)
I'm really looking forward to the location aware tiles, or how they are called. Having special tile parts appear in special situations, like one in the corner, or one surrounded by others, or on on the edge would be amazing. I kinda wanna do greek styled pillars. Especially if I can make them on the left and right edge look rounish. I really hope there will also be the possibility to have textures go over multiple tiles, kinda like in terraria. And for underground structures, you could do some natural ones too, like a magma lake with a small island in the middle with a chest on, or a small water lake with a tiny fisher hut next to it, or a stalactite and stalagmite filled small cave, also with treasure.
Hm... Yes, something like geo-scaning would be nice. Maybe, in minigame form - like resource mining in Mass Effect 2. Underground is just too huge.
One thing i think would be awesome to come by would be rather large but would also have surface access. You would come across a masive hole in the ground pretty deep going down into the underground layer only to find excavation equipment abandoned and left behind. And you find that this equipment uncoverd some old ruins that dont look they they are from any of the playable races and these ruins could go deep into the ground all they way down to the lava layer possiblely
A little more complex maybe, but buried treasure with associated treasure maps would be cool. Look at a map, and a tree or rock on the planet will be marked with an X. Dig downwards and uncover a chest that's overlapped by rock that only appears when mined. You'd have to be very lucky to find it accidentally! Though it's been mentioned, traps would be cool. Especially ones you can't easily mine away without setting off. Graves that aren't necessarily exciting tombs of mystery. Individual cemetery plots, or mass burial sites. Loot the dead with possible consequences like angering the NPCs on the planet.
