    Howdy folks,

My wife does not read or speak English at all and has expressed interest in playing Starbound with me.

    I have searched, but...

Is there any word on a Japanese language option for this game?

I've read that they wont add in more languages until the release.

Well it would certainly be a challenge to change the tons of text in the game to Japanese.

Yes, I expect she will not want to participate in beta (I wouldnt mind however) so my question was about v1.0.

Sigh, I guess I'll have to get used to translating everything for her over and over again (she never remembers words in English for some reason).

Flashbacks of christmas at parents house translation episodes in Canada... *shudder*

Multiple languages for Starbound would have been a nice stretch goal. In hindsight it's really something Chucklefish should have done, since they can hire a translator at any time to work on the in-game text. Maybe you could start a petition or something?

I would NOT be surprised if, somewhere down the road, people make language mods/packs for the game. So I probably wouldn't worry too too much? But yeah... I haven't heard anything about Japanese. Sorry :<

The devs will be making translations following the initial release at some point, and I have a feeling that would include Japanese. It's also possible that unofficial translations will also pop up as mods.

Well English isn't the easiest of languages to learn.. At least shes trying? :p

On topic, Im sure there will be somebody on this earth that will take the time to Translate it. Eventually

I can imagine that the game would still be a lot of fun even if you can't read the conversations or lore. Quests would be difficult, but even then they usually have pretty clear icons indicating the goals, from what I've seen so far.

Just imagine that all the NPCs are speaking in an unknown alien language and you're doing the best you can to learn the meaning by the actions that come along with the words. In the end, giant swords and epic space rifles form their own universal language.

スタルバネドがいちばんすきです (very rough guess at the Katakana for Starbound... :D)

Close! It would be スターバウンド in katakana. In English speach it would read as Sutaa Baundo.

Glad to see people learning the language!

My wife however, not so much effort.
Maybe if i wasnt fluent in Japanese she would try more..

I would disagree. Definetly the easiest of the languages I've heard of.
P.S. And English is not my native , yes.

I'd definitely say English is by far one of the hardest languages to learn, with the least consistency of -any- language and the most exceptions.

I'll give you an example: "Ough". How many ways can it be pronounced?

Right Okay. Not sure what to say to that.

In case we are not on the same wavelength.

I believe about 10-12 times? Even so this doesn't even include regional dialects, So with that in mind.. Possibly hundreds.

It has zero consistency, My Native is Gaelic so i cannot speak for much on that either :p Matters get harder with American English too ~.~ I still today get the witches, mails and the bucket of pronounication and punctuation wrong.
And I have been in the UK from a move from Ireland about 15 years back.

Outside of England/US, many people think that English is a pretty easy language to "master". At least compared to other European ones.
I'm French, and I can guarantee you that French has its share of exceptions. Oh, and there are also around fifteen tenses, and conjugating a verb requires to know both the tense - and - the person (In English, the person doesn't matter excepted for the occasional "s" for 3rd singular). And even though there are many less irregular verbs (Though ironically they are the most used ones), it's still very disorienting when coming from a language like English or worse, Chinese where there isn't any conjugation.

Back to the topic. I recall that when I was young, the same situation aroused - I was only beginning to learn English and my father got tired of translating everything I didn't know. So he bought me a pocket dictionary. If you have vocabulary problems, trust me, it works.

Yep, I agree. In latin languages (Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian and so on), the conjugated verb indicades the person who is talking. Then, is very confusing when trying to learn a language that doesn't use this structure (I'm brazilian).

I really wouldnt put the "Master" into a context with the English Language at all.

With a probable 1m+ words within its vocabulary (I believe it holds the largest vocabulary out of all major speaking languages) and it's tendancy to coin new ones when a word is lacking for it, Its a constant learning game. I can agree its easyISH to learn English but to master it? Far away from any ideal. I doubt even the majority of English native citizens are not masters of the language, Something a select few that devote time to in University maybe.

Can we safely put it down as the each their own? I find it easier to learn a new language now then when i was learning English, Once you learn one, the rest do get easier, In my opinion anyway. Story time.

I moved to the UK with a very limited account of the English language, My Grandparents were very strongly against me learning it at a young age.. Sure, I got it eventually, I can type pretty well, I can Talk better.. (with a crazy Irish/East Midland accent)
But that took me all my childhood of constant learning through various media. When I moved to the UK I was expected to go to school. Something I hated, with a passion. I struggled heavily there, the lack of learning support (They had no Gaelic speaking tutors) meant I had a pretty rough time.

Anyway, I was expected to learn French or at least attend the classes, I couldn't be bothered, So French Class was my time for a ciggie under the bridge class. The only time i put into actually learning that language was when exams drew near and I was 1 subject out from gaining a minimum of 5 qualifications that i needed to do what I do today

Why I took french I don't know... But it was back then through my nicotine deprived childhood I thought it was the easiest option.

No coursework, No material. 1 study book. I took a C from that exam overall.
    And French is hard?

I believe they're mistaking "being functional" in English with "mastering" English.
