It's interesting to compare the development time between Starbound and Terraria

Well, thank you and everyone else who weighed in on what I had to say. I was mainly trying to gather most of the negative criticism along with my personal dislikes of the game in the hope we could have a civilized discussion about these problems.

I wish the development team the best and I hope that Starbound will turn out to be an amazing experience after all.

I can't exactly clarify since I have to leave after this post, but isn't Starbound coded in Lua? I've only used Lua a little bit and I'd say it's pretty easy to work with, but coding things in a large scale gets a bit tedious. Crafting an entire game in Lua seems like hard work, so I wouldn't expect there to be a separate language being used as well.

I think Terraria might be written in C#, but that's what I'm unsure about.

I find it funny that people are complaining about not getting updates... when there is a DAILY UPDATE BRANCH.

How daft is the general public, really?

Devs, you guys (and gals) just keep on with what you are doing. It's speeding along now, we can all see that. Stick to your guns, and finish it out in style. That will silence the naysayers.

You can get refunds on Steam, but it's for games that are universally awful. I'm talking GTA IV's initial port (bad enough that Steam offered refunds to everyone who bought it), From Dust with all it's truly atrocious bugs and performance issues, Earth 2066: for being well, everyone knows about how much of a lie Earth 2066 was, and of course Air Control.

Starbound is currently incomplete and has some bugs, but even now it's still far and away better than the titles that Steam gave refunds for.

that being sead, your olny gonna get your refund for extearmly limited reasons
so the chances of getting it on starbound are almost 0 to none

i feel like thats the reason half if not all the crying about the updates takeing too long gets shot down almost instently
if people accaly reserched insead of whining then they could fix there proplems lol

lol the update are to small make bigger ones that take longer
hey the big updates we wanted and knew would take longer are taking longer make small updates instead
    Rinse and repeat

You can never make everyone happy. Keep up the good work chucklefish I have seen so many good franchises rushed out and become less then they could have been because the big publishers have no patience.

People complain because they wanted more stable updates. Nightly builds are hardly stable. I think what these people wouldve liked to see was a patch or two, a stable build, between beta and 1.0 instead of the giant leap that is beta to 1.0.

I believe this criticism is valid, and i do believe that this was suppose to happen initially when CF devs discussed the progress. Unstable builds for those who want the cutting edge stuff, followed into stable beta builds.

A game which pretty much shouts that it isn't serious sci-fi in so many areas that it's really not practical listing them all, and you balk at that? :)

    Edit:
    <devil's advocate>
I didn't buy the game on steam, I bought it from here. I still haven't redeemed my steam key. In fact, I have no presence on steam at all. I don't think steam would be the right people to contact if I did want a refund.

    (NB: I don't want a refund.)

You'd have a point about the dailies if they actually worked for everyone, but I can't very well enjoy them or test them if they immediately crash as soon as I start the game.

Move your player folder, universe folder, and starbound.config out of your starbound folder and then check files with steam.

    That should let them work.

It does not, I've tried all the tricks that are known so far, and I know a number of people who are having the same issues. The dailies just don't work for a lot of people and I feel like 1.0 won't be any different at first.

I think it's not accurate to think that 1.0 will be the same quality/stability as the nightly builds. Nightly builds have zero effort put into them towards stability. If the code compiles and is checked in, it gets sent out. Maybe even if it doesn't compile.

To me, it seems very likely that the 1.0 patch will have the content of the nightlies, but there will be effort put into making sure it is stable. It may not be fully stable, because bugs happen, but it should be significantly better than the nightlies in terms of user-friendliness.

I could always be wrong, but I don't think CF would work so hard and long to release a giant patch, just to have it blow up when it's downloaded. That seems...silly.

Considering I couldn't even run the beta when it first released (it was missing a needed file), I'm not as optimistic when it comes to 1.0. I didn't have that issue when Terraria released, so I have to side with Terraria when it comes to this kind of debate, although I'll probably change my mind when Starbound is actually feature complete.

Please please please drop the nightlies=updates argument, the existence of daily alpha-alphas does not invalidate all criticism of the update schedule. People are well aware that the nightly branch exists.

Do nightly builds provide updates, each night? Is content changing between every nightly build? If so, they are updates.

They are not STABLE updates, but they are updates to the game.

If your criticism of the update schedule is that you want faster stable updates, then that is valid, but simply because nightlies are not what you are looking for does not mean that they are meaningless.

This is a great explanation of why Starbound "seems" to not have alot of updates, but in fact are doing alot of behind the scenes work. I am a programmer, and although not a video game programmer, I understand it enough to understand the complexity of procedurally generated games. I bet if people actually understood the complexity of the game, 95% of the people would not be complaining, (I hope not anyway).

CF is still building/optimizing the Engine, so it can be the amazing game, They are taking the necessary time to get it right so, they wont come back a year down the road and say they cant update the game any further because of limitations in the game engine (this is what happened to Terraria).

Also July was a big month for updates, because they rewrote the code for title rendering to improve game performance, that is alot of work and a big deal for the game progression.

So for me, I am happy with the [nightly] updates it shows me they have something big planned in the future!

More stable updates? It's a BETA. B. E. T. A. Stable is not something to expect when we are testing features.

The criticism is not valid, it is based on a false premise of there not being updates, when there are now daily updates. The Devs are updating there game and offering different tiers to their beta process. You can opt in to whichever level of testing you want. If you want stable and character safe, you get it. If you want to see what was worked on THAT DAY... you can.
The action of incorporating nightly builds has rendered this whole argument null and void, for they have now covered every base of updates needed for a beta.

Those that want to continue to rail against nighty updates, are not being honest with themselves. Here... I'll make it simple...

Do you want frequent updates? Opt in to nightly.
Do you want stable updates? Stay in standard.
Do you want stable yet modded experience? Use the unstable branch with mod support.
Do you want to build or protect your progression? Stay in standard.

    Does that cover it all?

Cmon people... it's not that complicated.

Nightlies show that the game is being worked on, granted. So does the Dev blog. Are they meaningless? No. Do the fact that they exist mean that you can say "The game is regularly updated" without a handful of asterisks? No.
I know you think people who are impatient for more material in the unstable/stable builds don't understand how development works, but consider for a moment that maybe they do. Maybe they understand but STILL disagree...as you (kind of) just admitted, there is valid criticism here.
It's really unnecessary, and slightly obnoxious, to continually call anyone who isn't completely happy with development ignorant or stupid. I can't help but lump comments like that with the "CF is scam, game will never be done" level of argument. It's close-minded, oft-repeated, and doesn't really add anything to the conversation...
That's why I said "please drop it"

I'm not claiming everyone should be all peachy... The Devs offered their game as a Beta for a reason... to get feedback.

I'm simply stating that complaining about lack of content or updates has been invalidated. So yes, it should be dropped as an argument.

Now, on with more constructive work... like the odd choice of having Novakids start with guns.... hmm...
