It's interesting to compare the development time between Starbound and Terraria

what are video games but pixels on a screen formed together to resemble concepts that we comprehend

Personally i dont care about the pace, the thing i dislike is all the work they put in that feels to me like its going to need to be done all over again by mods.

    Things like:

    - Tier systems instead of specific tech to enter specific planets (Warm clothing to enter cold planets, hazmat suit for corrosive atmosphere, grav device for high grav planets, etc, etc) leading to a more sandbox experience

    - Total reworking of the pickaxe system because scifi

But honestly its really nice to look at mods people make cuz it seems people will cover the issues I have with vanilla

To be fair, "we comprehend" is a very strong statement.

So you're telling me that all I would need to do to mod in Starbound's generated content to Terraria is recolor some assets and toss them in the main directory? Wow, sounds easy!

Five months plus since the last official update in February, which added massive new features like... Valentine's Day items. We're also up to, what, four other games being advertised on the grounds that "the dev team is still working on Starbound and we're not diverting much of your friends' money into hiring people to advertise and publish the other games".

That was sarcasm? Who can tell? When one is being sarcastic, it helps to flag it as such with a proper Emote, like this... :p

Without Emotes, things can get misinterpreted &/or misconstrued.

On the one hand the lack of updates bothers me as well, but on the other I'm very glad they've decided to stop giving people a chance to weigh in on/complain about things until they've made some real progress on core systems.

I've mentioned why multiple times and don't feel the need to rehash it all.

Suffice to say that, while it annoys me as a player, as a person with an understanding of game development who has watched the mistakes this specific developer has made since releasing early access, I feel this long drought while they get most of the core systems working is going to be much better for the game in the long run.

I like how some really OT and derailing comment are still there, but a small sarcastic comment get a warning for a month and person being called a jerk. 2 times.

About procedural generation again.... I understand it takes a lot of time and probably and comparing to Terraria difference is very big (but still, Terraria had some good generation, especially in Dungeon). Even more judging from alpha-tester comment, who, if i understand him right, probably tested SB during first half of 2013, generation was only thing which was actually in place, other aspect were in much worst form now. So most of Dev team time were poured into it (aside from creating pixel art, which is actually a part of generation system).
Now about difficulty of such system. Yes, it's difficult, very, difficult, but it's like a no-brainier for anyone who is seriously interested in games. I still had to encounter any game with good procedural generation in a lot of aspects. Even game, which will could be greatly improved by adding it - Action/Rpg still use it very cautiously - not because they don't want to, but because it's very, like insanely difficult to create a meaningful procedural generation. And more must be put into balancing it, if one manage to create such system.

So in the end, it boils down to simple question - Why this weren't taken into account, or weren't taken enough. And after every release date missed, we are years before real complex system (and not just recolored everything + same structure patterns on every planet) will be in place, and some game elements are going to be pregenerated anyway.

That's the thing though, the current systems have the ability to do far more than just palette swap. Terrain generation can change with biome, cave generation can change with biome and depth. Object and dungeon distribution can be greatly controlled. That stuff is currently on the stable branch. On the nightlies, we've got a whole bunch of changes to the monster generation and spawning system.

Starbound as a platform right now is pretty robust, ask anyone who had dug in and started modding it.

Here's a dump of the worldgen config

To be fair, a lot of Terraria coding is junk and doesn't lend itself well to modding.
Starbound is much better done as the coding is concerned.

It takes longer to build a stronger foundation to a better game, but the content creep that the Starbound system experienced of the start was quite bad.

Hopefully this next one will be much better...

It is disheartening to see how poorly Chucklefish has kept up with development when compared to Terraria or most other game developers.

Take the lone 16-year-old developer of Unturned, he has churned out more meaningful content updates in the past weeks than Chucklefish has in almost two years.

I understand that it is normal to not work on weekends and to have a normal work schedule, but what makes it worse is things like this:

    I see.
It is still rather unnerving to see the developers more focused on playing games than working on Starbound, considering how far behind they are.
