With the talk of large and explorable underwater biomes, perhaps even planets(?), what could be more interesting than having an underwater race and civilizations to go alongside them? I am not sure if the Avians will be gaining any racial traits, such as perhaps increased hover time in the air or jump height, but there are certainly things that an Aquatic Race could have in those terms. There could be the benefit of not requiring diving equipment, but perhaps much like any other race would require equipment for diving, perhaps something would be required for those of the Aquatic Race to remain on land. Nothing that would be too difficult to procure, most certainly along the terms of the quest line of whichever planet the race would start off at, however there may be upgraded versions? I am unsure of how the game's equipment system might work, but perhaps the first you would get takes up more than one inventory slot, or is clunky and needs maintaining. That may be too convoluted however, so perhaps just increased underwater breathing time without the need of any diving equipment. Then there might be air pockets or air bubbles Sonic style around the place that could be useful for survival. Perhaps after time they would become more and more skilled in diving and be able to stay submerged longer without the diving equipment eating up one of their slots. As far as the thought of them needed to stay in the water, not so. They could be along the terms of an Aquatic Being that simply remains a bit more slimy, like a frog. Not saying it would be a frog race, but there could be variations and whatnot. There are after all many sea creatures that they could model after, and who's to say it has to be traditional? It is a game after all! Anyhow, just a few simple thoughts on an Aquatic Race from my mind.
Mmm, something I had thought of after seeing the main space station. Perhaps the text upon arriving could simply be different, seeing as many people from varying races would be escaping their destroyed planets and arriving to this area (I believe that is how the backstory goes). Thus being how you could get said equipment, if it would be put to use as opposed to the increased breath whilst diving.

The idea has merit. However From what I can tell, you start on the space station, so it would have to be an amphibious race, like the Zora from Zelda.
