It's awfully depressing when...

On both the forums here, and the steam-community forums for this game have people in despair about the halt on updates... I mean, I'm pretty faithful that the devs are honestly doing their honest best given their recent situation. People are asking if they should buy this game because they want to support it, but more than half of the steam community tells them to save their money because it's a trap, or that the developer's are lazy and inconsistent in some odd fashion.

I can only hope my efforts in those threads persuaded the individuals to fund this game regardless, because it really is a great game. I mean, I've already sunk like, nearly a hundred hours or so, and will probably do that six times over before even the final release.

    Why?
    I love it.

But honestly, let's look at it from their perspective:

I mean, if you had to skip countries (and your home) just to go work on a game, wouldn't that leave you sort of stumped? I have to say, I hardly doubt most of the community would be fine if one were simply plopped into another country and told "Do this." Think of the sort of mental taxation that could have on an individual. If my boss told me that I was transferring to a new location, i'd be a little out of it too if I knew it'd mean that I had to move away from loved ones and my home.

However, I will agree: The lack of voice does disturb me just as much as the next person. I love this game and I do honestly think we deserve a more fluent way of knowing what they're working on. Some sort of progress bar would be nice, just to quell peoples constant worry over updates.

I'm hoping that this next update will more than makeup for all the lost time, and I have a feeling that when it comes the community will be back to it's old self again, and most of the unease and worry will fade out. So, here's to things getting better in the future. I hope the devs don't have too much trouble fixating themselves to their new lifestyle, I feel for them honestly. I can't imagine what it's like to know that as a Dev, people are expecting things from you left and right (as they rightfully should, given they bought the product) and have them show doubt in your abilities.

Oh well... It's just a thought. I think I'd honestly just like to see the "old" community that was super-excited about the game, you know? It makes it much more glamorous.

So, you saw people talking about it somewhere else, including on these forums... and instead of continuing the conversation that was at hand you made a new thread?

I'm merely talking about the depressing nature of the steam community in general, which wasn't the main directive of most of the other threads which were more or less "QQ where's the next update?/Devs are lazy" threads in steam and the occasional one here, so to answer your question: Yes, I did. And for those who would come over from the steam forums still looking for reason to buy the game who might haphazardly glance at a thread or two concerning the game.

If nothing else, I'm hoping to re-inspire some faith in the developers. So you'll have to excuse this as a possible repost but honestly something that needs to be said.

On a personal note, it's equally depressing that the first reply post is merely about the post itself rather than the issue or non-support thereof.

The title isn't exactly telling about the subject of this thread's intent, and the subject of 'problems with updates' across many of Cf's social media platforms (not just, but including Steam) has come up a lot in the last 24 hours alone in a variety of threads here. I'll agree that I haven't seen a thread dedicated to Steam's particular lacking... but it is just one of many sites that share this issue. Not everyone uses every single media source, or should have to, IMO.

If part of your intention was to grab the attention of a few people from 'steam wandering by', then the title should contain "Steam forum update issue" or similar. I don't mean any offence, but "IT'S AWFULLY DEPRESSING WHEN..." sounds like a forum game or some other problem, IMO.

I don't have a problem with the the concept and intent behind this thread, just the delivery. In fact, I'll go so far as to say I really like the idea that Cf should be paying more attention to Steam. But, I'd also add, everywhere else they maintain a web presence.

As for inspiring the developers, there is a thread for that. As for inspiring faith in others about the developers? Not too sure about that one, but regular communication (maybe in the form of a once a week blurb on all platforms) could go a long ways.

I'm not a blind hater, or a blind defender of Cf. In fact, I like Starbound, purchased it off Steam, played 300+ Hrs according to Steam, and strongly believe it will be way better, maybe even ultra epic when it gets finished.

I also think many of us are tired of repeating ourselves.

Yes well unfortunately i don't think there are any mods for the steam community forums so nothing to aid in giving a official message, anyone just browsing to see if its worth the money without knowing the issues would believe from the threads that this games a scam, devs have run off ect ect, theres a few people trying to present a valid argument but there getting swept away under the sheer numbers of people who believe they have been scammed.

Every patience has its limit, especially when you're excited about something. If they need more time for their updates, by all means. But you'd have to understand that when you own a dozen other early access games like me that chug out content way more often and with smaller teams and lesser budget - it makes you wishing for more in regards of Starbound.

Wow, you just love posting that picture, eh? Did it ever occur to you that Tiy is an adult, along with everyone else at Chucklefish and thus, they should all be able to hold their own against criticism? And that maybe, if they didn't give people so much to criticize, that it wouldn't happen? They blatantly lie all the time, and then Tiy tries to guilt the people calling them out on it, that's what truly depressing.

I find the whole thing laughable, you are all lucky to get anything information at all before the full release. It's hilarious how AAA game dev teams only have to release a few trailers throughout a few years of development and a bunch PR that usually tells you very little about how the game is actually gonna be. And yet here when indie devs are working their asses off and decide to include their community more into the development process the community gets so damn full of itself that it starts making ridiculous demands telling the company how to run itself like they know jack shit about any of this.

This is why I keep saying indie devs shouldn't include their community so much into things, everyone wants the game to be made the way they want. All these different opinions you can never please everyone and so because they are included into the development process everyone is making demands all the time to make sure the game turns out the way they want regardless of what the dev or other players want. The game devs are only human, of course they are gonna get demotivated under such pressure. I've seen devs go into hiding for an entire year because of the community whining and bitching that they don't update fast enough or they don't release enough information even though they'd been giving their community far more info than any large company based dev. Developers hit rough spots and road blocks that take a long time to get around, this happens to devs regardless of if they are indie or not(AAA titles often get pushed back or released bug ridden because of this).

Have some respect for the devs and have some patience, games take several years to develop, especially large indie titles like these. They'll get your update out a lot faster if they aren't demoralized by the communities constant incessant bitching. Your whining about updates will only slow things down more if anything. If you want to whine about something at least let it be about the game itself(mechanics, art style, etc.) and not the company, at least then your opinion would be worth something and not just useless destructive criticism that the company can't do anything about.

Also about those other teams with smaller budgets; Those are different games coded completely differently with different game mechanics under (a) different dev(s). Don't think you can compare them just because you played/followed them. You don't know anything about how those games are coded, or how the devs operate. You also don't know how their budget is actually divided, or if some of the budget is out of the devs own pockets(which is the case for some indie devs) let alone how much money. The devs may reveal to you some of the inner workings of the development process but in order to really understand enough to be able to say if a dev is working harder than another you'd have to be right there in the development process yourself as part of the project team. Don't get full of yourself just because devs now are starting to include their community more into things. They can't just throw every single detail at you, it's bad PR and it consumes way too much time, effort, and money. If they haven't put out updates it's because they don't have time, the content they do have is not in a state ready to be revealed that you wouldn't misunderstand, and/or the progress so far has been framework/backend stuff that wouldn't mean a thing to normal players.

It's really depressing when people can't get along just because they can't look past differences in opinions.

Also, when people claim they want to see changes and compromises, but are too obstinate to allow changes and compromises.

And no, this isn't referencing any situation in general. Or any people, or any "sides." (Funny word, sides. As if everyone who believes differently than a group is an opposing "side") This is just my top-down view of 90% of the problems on this forum.

People being too stuck in their ways, honestly. It's almost like if someone said "Prove you can do a backflip," but then closed their eyes and turned away, still sneering at you because you "couldn't do it." They want to see change and compromise (Or at least claim they do) but turn a blind eye towards change, or cast their gaze downwards, unable to see anything but the path that they're walking on.

Change can only happen when it's allowed to happen, and encouraged to happen. Lately, that just hasn't been the case on these forums. Everyone's always so edgy and up in arms, ready to attack anyone with a differing view.

Opinions starts wars. But I agree with piccolo. I think they should look at the current state of things and fix it. If people are upset then fix it. There are to groups here the people that see things for how they are the people that are always chuckle positive. If one group throws up an opinion the other will flock to tell them they are wrong. If you see a post you dont like then how about not replying to it. ChuckleFish doesnt need anyone to stand up for them they are big boys/girls now. Part of being a company is learning how to control and sooth the masses that buy your product. They will learn if not slowly. But they cant count on the community to do it for them because that will only breed controversy and arguments.

I certainly appreciate some of their efforts and some of their failures, but that doesn't mean I need to worship them. They asked for money and got more than enough ... maybe they should appreciate us more.

There are plenty of things wrong that Tiy could easily fix to rebuild morale, but he continues to turn a blind eye and bash the community for his own failings.

My friend, its called geting a pair.

Geting the maturity to know when you were wrong,to acept criticism from those times, and to make up for all the wrong you have made.

Tiy is being a lil coward.he decided to make the move, the move took too long, comunity backlash hapened.

instead of understanding this,Tiy criticizes the fans for the backlash, when everyone would just be MUCH more relived and so much more happy if they would have just anounced a new nupdate for Starbound.

Realy, this entire thing would just go away if the damed guy would just make an anouncement of an update, not even a finished one, mind you.Just a list of thing to come in Starbound, instead of Witchmarsh.

This is honestly not far from the truth, let alone it might be the only meaningful truth right now.

People were upset due to the lack of news purely related to the game (excluding artwork), that was the main issue the past month, and things only escalated ever since the silence about it started. Basically it came over to everybody as if CF had lost interest in putting effort into the game, which was obviously not the case, but it was still the hot rumor everywhere.

Obviously, since everybody got so accustomed to the regular news updates, not getting any at all for a long while could make some people think that something is going wrong somewhere and this feeling keeps escalating as well until something makes the rage-bubble pop, kinda like that last news post. Of course people will shitpost, they're angry for the lack of communication that the devs aren't even obliged to commit and why? Because the updates used to be frequent, like I said above, it became a habit for people to expect semi-frequent news updates.

Honestly once a week on the same day is more than enough (on THIS website though), perhaps somewhere on friday every week, it would please so many people and it will enlighten the mood too, even if nothing super-relevant happened.

Updated individually, on a one on one basis (which is what you're attempting to sell this as)? No, nobody would expect that. But as a community who have contributed an enormous amount towards the making of this game, yes, I think that we collectively are absolutely entitled to be updated on a regular basis.
