I apologize if this doesn't belong in this forum, I wasn't too sure where to post it.
I just played for a bit and was on my ship. I decided to destroy a few chests to make space for another; since my inventory was completely filled, I let the items from the chest sit on the floor while I sorted others to make space. Not even a minute after they dropped, they despawned, leaving me a numerous number of blueprints and techs short. Not exactly a bug or a crash issue, but certainly something very frustrating!

The lifespan of dropped Items appear to be around 30 seconds. You really have to be decisive with your inventory space when cleaning house!

It is still definitely too short.
Even if bloc drop can make lag, add a little more time will not blow up any computer. (I wish :p)

Loxy, that's that typical drop time. I've noticed that items that drop out of broken chests have an even SHORTER lifespan. My experiences with it are ~5-10 seconds, not the normal 30, though I've tried to avoid it at all costs now, so it may have been fixed. Breaking chests and items disappearing too fast is nothing new, and is a bit of a big issue.

Actually it's as easy as, don't try to gather important stuff while you have no room. You wouldn't go to a supermarket to shop 10 bags of groceries if your car was packed with recycle garbage so you couldn't fit anything.
It's annoying at times, yes. But it's not an issue really, just make sure after mining dirt for a few hours you empty that crap before you try to pick up important stuff. 30s is a lot, more than enough to empty a slot or two to pick up an item from an enemy if you're unprepared and well the rest is just up to you and your inner cleaner. :)

Yes, THIRTY seconds is enough, but the issue is in breaking chests and not having the time to pick stuff up. If you accidentally break a chest because you have a good pick, misclicking as I had with my first mishap with it, then anything that doesn't fit in your inventory goes poof before you can do anything about it.

Might be a bit short, never thought about it, but then again I'm not sure misclicking counts as an issue :p I agree it's annoying at times, I happened to kill my doctor in my space ship while for some reason left clicking my storage instead of pressing 'E' so he got an axe in the head. Annoying but my own fault. As for chests broken this way and the time they are left, it might be a bit too short but then again, you'll be more careful now right? Not repeat a mistake and so on, so shouldn't be an issue really :)

It's still an issue that they despawn faster than other rates, .113; the issue is not misclicking, just that misclicking was how to find the issue in the first place.

Augh, this happened to me too, and it was frustrating. Honestly, if we have to have items despawn, it at least shouldn't happen on the ship. It doesn't really make sense to have things just vanish into thin air because they were on the floor for 30 seconds... in your ship???

Plus someone could teleport into your ship and ruin everything pretty easily, accidentally or otherwise.

As long as they're in your party. If you only let people into your party that you trust, then that's not a problem (although I still vote for the idea that your ship should be a protected zone against EVERYONE).

Despawns though are a general rule so as to keep the world from being overly cluttered and slowing down too much. As much as I don't wish to defend the 30s timer, it may be the magic number in keeping worlds from overly lagging due to item drops. Perhaps when they do game optimization later, they'll be able to extend that time. Just something to keep in mind to bear through the madness.

I figured chests would be open for everyone, even at the ship, but I was surprised to see that the ship storage was in fact open for anyone. Should be at least a setting, like open for party to use, open for party to leave items, or just open for player.

Now that's a bit of topic though, I still think the problems with items dropping is something we as players should learn to deal with. I'd rather be without lag than have a few extra seconds to loot stuff, just because I might click the wrong buttons or for some reason blow up chests I know contain loot. In the ship, I'd like it if there was some kind of protection against.. Well, accidents :) Then again, just be careful works well. "Make a mistake once, shame on the game, make a mistake twice, shame on me!" :p
