    Will items have teirs?
    eg. S-class A-class B-class etc?

Yes, they will. They will go from 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

The planets will also have tiers. Meaning that if you go to a tier 2 planet with tier 1 gear, you're going to have a bad time.

The devs have also stated there will be a Tier X or Tier 11, which locks you into PvP when you have it equipped. I'm not sure how, or if this scales with Planets as well, from my understanding the planets themselves have 100 levels of Threat, and each Tier is assumed to work for 10 levels.

I dont know why, but Tier X feels weird, unless it is related to your character reaching god status and then everyone is agaisnt you.

That piece of information I did not remember. Thanks for that! :3

No problem! It's our duty to keep the information spreading.

... OMG, I never even considered that! A whole new world of possibilities has just opened up to me. Thank you, good sir, you just made this game even MORE exciting to me.

oh and P.S: can't wait for beta, etc, etc. ;)

The devs have said that there will be 10 tiers for the first full release, and possibly more to come with additional Content Patches.

However, for the purpose of the beta, there will be only between 2 to 4 tiers, at first, then they will work along the testers to implement further tiers until full release.

  10. lol. It's just pvp only armor, wouldn't be efficient as survival gear.

Yeah, there are ten tiers, and 100 levels.

I never did like the word "bum rush"...the internet has ruined me. :(

Anyway, I think I'm going to try to visit higher tiers than my progress is at too if it's allowed. Sound exciting and dangerous.

PvP-only games inevitably balance out the available gear to make the gameplay enjoyable. PvE games, on the other hand, care more about quest progression, and so have tiered gear which gets stronger as you progress. Therefore, a big problem with games that combine PvP and PvE (or open-ended PvE-only games but have a shelf life that far exceeds the main quest line) suffer from a major problem: you go through 90% of the game's items in the first 50% (or less) of the total time you play the game, and are ultimately left with only 10% of the items to use after that. The other 90% become useless because they are weaker than the 10% you can keep.

Take Terraria, for example. Pre 1.2 everyone in PvP (or even most PvE purposes) just wore Hallowed armor and ignored everything else. After 1.2, everyone just switched to Specter. Think about this: the game has like 30 different armor sets, but for over 50% of the time you play the game (PvP, creative construction, and everything else after you maxed your gear) you only use 1 or 2 sets! This wastes a huge amount of assets and makes gear choosing boring.

I hope that by "Tier X" they mean "max-level" gear, which spreads out in specialization as opposed to raw power. I want to reach an end game where I can pick not between 1 or 2, but between 10 or 20 different sets, or combinations thereof. In other words, while early-to-mid-game Starbound can have a PvE-based item structure (based on question progression and raw upgrades), I want the end-game gear to have a PvP-based structure (all equally powerful in raw terms, but specialized, with some combos better for some purposes, and none being so powerful as to make the others useless).

This "Tier X" content will be the phase where you get to fight PvP battles, or raid super-powerful bosses. Any further gear you get would either be more specialized or cosmetic, but not have any higher stats. After this point, it's up to you to use your brains and imagination to come up with a good build, as well as learn how to play it well, as opposed to just keep grinding until you get gear so powerful as to obsolete both any monster and any other piece of gear.

Exactly this. Tier X should not only have the largest variety of viable equipment, but should also be the target of the largest number of balance patches. Lots of buffing/nerfing items to maintain a balanced PvP metagame. As much as people hate having their favorite thing getting nerfed, or seeing something they hate getting buffed, these types of changes should just motivate you to change things up and try a new build and learn to play outside the box you were used to before.

In the end, good PvP is all about balance, and tier X is all about having one tier entirely devoted to that.

Has anyone got information about if there are still the first three tiers in beta? Or did they change something? ^^

Lol did they name ores after developers? Omni-steel, Rho-dium (ok.. this one exists), Georg-idium.. so why no "Tiy-tanium"? I will have to change the ores + their names in a mod.. beginning with copper

I hope Starbound gets the whole scaling thing right, I know too many games ruined because the devs didn't think through their difficulty scaling properly (I don't know if they have talked about this on a livestream or anything, I'm new to the community and the game :p)

Yeah, I agree with you here. The end game should balance up the end game items, but to keep it fresh there should be different weapon styles and such, not more powerful but just functioning differently in order to create variety. I think the devs are already moving in that direction, which I think is pretty sweet.

As far as im aware different planets have different threat levels (difficulty) so it should be fairly tame and easy at first while you learn the basics of the game and then it progresses to however extreme you want to/can go to. ;)
