One thing I'd like, because it can be frustrating to jump down to grab items at time when a mob of monsters is surrounding your spoils of war, is the item despawn time to be brought back a bit. I lose a lot of meat from the ground by not being able to pick it up before it disappears. It would be nice if it'd stick around for at least a little bit more time.
I agree and can't think of any reasons, outside of mundane machine resources issues, that drops shouldn't stay forever.
There are plenty of games that have drops last, say, about five minutes. Not forever, which would...probably create lag, but at least would give a chance to retrieve without panic.
It wouldn't create lag if items are only simulated when a player is near, but yes anything but the paltry handful of seconds we have now would be great
+1. permanent/semi- permanent drop would be good. I went to a merchant with a full inventory (and didn't know it) and when I bought stuff, it dropped to the ground, by the time I noticed, I only had a few seconds to hurriedly drop some other item, but couldn't do so in time. My wife and kids hit the q button all the time, and in short order they lose the best weapon/tool we've acquired. Really cruel to make us panic about items on the ground.
+1 the current timer is way too short. as it is, you can barely mine out 2 sections of 3x3 before they despawn.
let's not forget the times you accidentally swing your pickaxe in your treasure chest room, and everything drops to the floor while your inventory is full RIP precious loot
And the times you beat the UFO boss only to get murdered by a stray f*cking shot from one of his minions, leaving the molten core, which is a ridiculous distance away from the point you beam onto the planet, leaving loads of rather deadly monsters in your way, and then realizing that from reading this thread you notice how short the despawn time is, and AGHHH GOOD F*CKING GOD, I SPENT HOURS ON THAT BEACON!
^ happened to me twice. Item persistence length should be based on rarity, ores being exception. say 1 minute for white, 3 for uncommon, 5 for rare and permanent for purpz. permanent items would get very cluttery, so permanent would be nice except for white rarity.
