Hmm, I thought he did a little coding too from what I read in an update a while ago. I might had mis-interpreted that, but I still stick to my statement that release isn't coming any sooner unless I freeze myself. And considering how hot it got today it sounds like a good idea.

I think the "it'll destroy roleplaying!" thing a bit overblown, really. A large part of roleplaying in games is reconciling what is going on mechanically and narratively in the game with what is going on with your character.

I believe what he means is that you could roleplay a Glitch as if they came from the 1950's, and so on and so forth. Thus, you could create a Hylotl character and pretend they were from a Middle-Eastern society.

I mean, I was planning on making a hard-boiled detective Novakid. As long as you reconcile it in your own head, it's all cool.

  3. Actually, no. That's called a stereotype. The glitch, in general will comply to the medieval times, but as an individual, the player character will do as the player, his/her owner, commands. My glitch characters have long since abandoned their "medieval" ideals and traits, as they are outcasts [which was setup by the glitch intro], but if I am forced to have my character love the medieval times, then no. This is not my glitch.

As for the change in lore, no. Most of us don't want to change the lore, rather, to create our own individual who isn't hard-limited by their own history. We want to be able to create glitches who used to be medieval but are now modern. We want to be able to create florans who are not cannibalistic. We want to create avians who are not religious. We want an option to take a detour from the main road to make immersion more interesting for us.

A possible solution would involve the player characters having absolutely no opinion concerning the item being examined, however, that could lead to bland flavor text.

That is definitely true, freezing yourself is the best way to get it to come sooner from your perspective :p And it's possible that he does do a little coding on the side. If I am right, though, his main focus is the art for the game, and they do have people who specialize in coding (such as the AI programmer they recently hired). I don't believe Tiy working on this will delay the release of the game.

The glitch are outcasts because they follow medieval ideals. Reason why they are called the Glitch. I'm sorry if your glitch loves the medieval times when they have been programmed to do that. I mean you can make it wear a hazmat suit if it really affects you. Still since the lore behind every glitch is that they are stuck in medieval times, sorry that is not your personal glitch if that is the situation. I mean I love all of these backgrounds for all these races. I will do what I want and listen to what that race has to say about certain objects.
I don't want to change lore, but I want to change lore, is what you mean. Right?

  6. The glitch are robots who are stuck in the medieval ideals. The glitch outcasts are glitches who are capable of thinking outside the box, and therefore can stray away from the medieval ideals. There's no point in apologizing in something you've never done; But the core point is this:

Ingame events that force the player character into a certain story, that could possibly clash with the story that we the players create can cause a possible breakage in immersion. This goes back to my first example. Suppose I created an Apex who doesn't like bananas. He examines a statue and he says "That is a banana statue. I love bananas." What am I supposed to think? Do you really expect me to pretend that did not happen, even though it did? Might as well pretend my Apex is a Monophyte and just forget ever making the suggestion.

I'm honestly unsure if you're deliberately twisting my tongue or not.

The fact that ingame events, such as examining for flavortext that could possibly tether us back into their main lore forces us to create workarounds. While that's okay for some, it isn't for others.
    That's where the concern starts.

Look, look, look, just keep believing that your glitch or whichever race you pick can just change everything that made them what they are. Just get a mod where you can raise a little child of that race to follow your standards, and have your opinions lodged into that child. Done and done.

  8. Again, avoiding the problem. Addressing the problem should not end up with having to resort to mods or other third party stuff. Like what other people have voiced here, it can be improved. For example, it does not have to be your character that speaks. Just keeping it the normal flavortext like most other games would suffice, honestly.

i suggested early in this thread that we should be able to choose between generic descriptions or race based funny descriptions...
seems to me that it'd solve the problem

is my suggestion so bad that it's better to criticize each others' opinions instead of finding a solution for both sides? :(

  10. I'm for the option of having examining it be generic descriptions, and possibly the option of having it as a simply ingame description, rather than dialogue.

  11. Thought some people might like to hear this interesting little tidbit here:
Since the responses are already there, why not have an option to toggle between race and generic?

EDIT: Oh, well, Kinda ninja'd. :ninja:

That would make me feel as if there is no lore based around that race. It would feel as if they are just blank slates with nothing to improve the overall story of Starbound. As if the character was not raised in their society and and had no true input on that item. I want more lore concerning the race. If I was in a video game and I saw something like a broken down car or space station. I would put my input on it, not say that is a broken down car or space station. That is just awful. If we have someone like navi commenting it would still be awful because it is again not your characters input but some random AI that has no true input on the item besides this is what it was and how it was used even if it came from the same race. I would rather have my character have their own history just like most indie game or AAA games. This "problem" you speak of is not a problem unless it pertains to you and a few others. If this becomes a huge thing then they may have to change it. Otherwise I highly doubt they will be changing something they think is for the best of this game. I don't want my Glitch to not act medieval out of nowhere when they were glitched and programmed to act as such. If they start acting differently out of nowhere then I would be highly upset and so would others. I and many others will be playing this game for what it is, not what we want it to be, or how you want your characters to act even though you never raised them to believe such ideals.

Only way to solve this debacle.

  14. Okay, so how does having the option [which I've been emphasizing with italics and underlines for quite a while now] to have it feel more generic than forced into lore, affect your gameplay? We want an option to not have to compromise our immersion just because we want to examine something.
Why settle for a win-lose solution when you can allow both side to have what they want, and ultimately, lead to a win-win solution?

Well bug Tiy for an option for it. Put it into suggestions. There you go.

  16. Exkaiser

You know, there is already neutral flavor text that shows up when you have the item in your inventory, as Tiy mentions.

  17. I'd rather talk about it here, y'know, on this thread... which talks about it. You're better off telling that to the OP.

    Sexy.

I mean you could be the first person to make it a suggestion. Then put this thread in the suggestion. It's pretty easy. That's all I am saying from now on. Stop talking about it here and do something about it where it matters and can get noticed easier.

  20. I'm not sure why you care so much about my actions, but no. I'm keeping myself here until locked. You say that as if General Discussion is a place that the developers rarely check. I've been in this forum long enough to say that they do check this place as often as they do in the suggestions. Besides, it's General Discussion, we talk about Starbound stuff, I am currently talking about my concerns for this topic and agreeing with possible solutions as a sidenote.

You'd honestly do better requesting the general opposition to make a suggestion for it than just me. Because based on this thread, it's not just me who agrees with the concerns.
