Of course you know the developers have to wait until the start of the fall semester or perhaps midterms/finals to start the beta. It always seems to happen this way :(

It's not just that, it's that they had the festival scheduled before the pre-orders, but announced it AFTER. A terrible move on their part, if you ask me, as Starbound's core mechanics seem in place, with story-stuff such as quests and humanoid npcs missing, along with server security missing. It always seems as if the devs are in the final stretch, until they start something like item descriptions or new furniture sets.

Obviously they should have Logan record all of those lines.

    ....that might take a while.

I'm 90% sure that the descriptions of objects won't be the players opinions of things, just things they would naturally know from their races history. For example, a glitch being able to spot a hidden camera in a cuboard isn't a opinion of something, the player can still have their own opinion of things, it's just the glitch bring able to spot things like that because it's part of the race.

You are still the character as long as the analysis of objects doesn't include opinions. And i doubt they will :)

So Tiy, Rho and the other artists/writers are supposed to learn coding so they can work on the things you feel are important instead of doing they things they know how to do? I don't think you quite understand how this works. Once a feature is coded in, eg furniture or item examination, the programmers go off and work on something else while the artists and writers now add the content that uses that feature. NOTHING is getting delayed by the non-programmers doing adding content. Whether it's one set of furniture or 500 it doesn't matter to the programmers.
Also these are things YOU feel are unimportant. I don't think melee combat is important, but imagine some people might feel a bit miffed if it's not in the beta and complain and thus give the game a bad reputation. This game is different things to different people, some will play it to build things, some will play it to kill things, some will play it to explore etc. Have some consideration for people other than yourself.

  6. Now that you mentioned it, you're right. That would be quite OOC huh?

However, I wouldn't waste such code simply because it would make player characters 'not so much' themselves. Why not give each examine descriptions more variation and slap it into NPCs, who will very rarely comment on items they walk by? To give them more life, y'know.

I in all honesty do not care, game is more complete great. It gives a nice intensive to play all races.

Often it's the little things as well as the big things that can make a game memorable and interesting. This is also a relatively tiny delay as Tiy completed over 1/10th of the descriptions in less than a day. Coding is not one of Tiy's skillsets, unfortunately, so he focuses on design and the creation of art assets. I figure this as an extension of those art assets. The entire team is staying active and contributing to the product as a whole, which is sometimes hard to do with a smaller team of focused disciplines. Larger game companies tend to send the art team off to another project once their work on the first is done and smaller ones will usually contract out for some art or programming or other assets.

I don't like it tbh. It sounds like a good idea on paper but like the OP says it gives my character a personality. If he makes jokes n' shit or reminisces about past events then Chucklefish is essentially deciding for me my characters history and personality.

I'm probably just going to not use the examine system and just read tooltips n shit just to keep up the immersion.

Might as well consider the Apex free. The glitch act like they are from the 50's. The Hytol act as if they came from Saudi Arabia and so on. Stop saying it will break immersion. The game already has lore. If your character has an opinion on something they examine because you make them examine it then you are going to get the lore they remember based on their race. GET OVER IT! There is lore everywhere. If you are going to complain about the idea of examining items in the game you might as well complain about the lore behind your character. Seriously makes no sense to complain about past lore when there is already past lore in the game already deciding what your character did until you take control. If you want to play this game like it is an RPG then great good for you, yet to sit there and complain about the lore behind that specific race is just absolutely ludicrous. It really is.

  11. Quite inaccurate. The relationship between the character the player [i.e. You, Me, Everyone else] creates and their race is extremely subjective.
For example, I could be creating an Apex who hates bananas. Now how is that going to affect me when I suddenly examine a banana statue and goes "It's a banana statue. I love bananas." That pretty much destroys the thought that my character hates bananas, as the fact that this is part of the game overwhelms the thought itself.

On the sidenote, disregarding people's complaints concerning the game does not solve the problem, that is, player immersion. You are merely avoiding it, letting the problem loose and possibly creating more issues related to itself.

P.S. Hylotl seem to strongly be based on Asian culture, as opposed to your claim, Middle Eastern [Saudi Arabia].
Likewise, Glitches are from the Medieval times [Romanesque, Gothic, Neogothic, Pre-Renaissance], they are not from the "50's".

50's, as in 1350's. the glitch have a medieval culture.

Um, not sure why people are arguing about this on the wrong thing. Am I the only one slightly bugged that a developer is wasting time doing these dialog descriptions all day instead of focusing on actual game mechanics? Descriptions can come post-beta. But whatever, they want to spend time on this they will. We already paid our money and the beta isn't going to come any sooner unless I freeze myself and set a timer to thaw me in a few months.

Yeah, lets have the writers learn coding to program the features you want.... Tiy's writing of descriptions does nothing to stop the programmers coding the other features.

You obviously did not understand my intentions. I was making fun of people wanting to change the lore in this game. I know where every race is from/what makes them that race. I was saying lets change them to the opposite. It was not a claim that they were something else. :lolwut: . Also player immersion is really up to the player. Since I will not be immersed at all since this is a pixel game in space. I will enjoy almost everything in the game. Since I will be playing the game for it's already created lore, not trying to come up with my own. While after you take control you can do to a certain point. Since there is nothing to prove that said Apex do or don't love bananas then I can't say much considering that unless you know the apex I created say's I love bananas when I happen to examine something. Since you can't directly control the thoughts of the character you create in this game the apex will love bananas. The glitch will love the medieval times. The Hytol will love Asian culture. The Humans are well Human. The Nova kid are loosely based around the wild west and so on.

Tiy, to my knowledge, works on spriting and other arts for the game. These item descriptions fall into that category, imo.

Again, let me clarify. I was poking at the fact people want their own lore. I was saying that we should have the Glitch come from the 1950's instead of medieval times. :lolwut:
