This side argument is entirely based on semantics. It has been from the beginning. Don't cop out.

You can release a beta version, but it's not the release of the game. "To release" and "a release" are two different terms.

  2. In the post I quoted, you claimed it was "not a release". "A" is an indefinite article, and a beta release is indeed a form of release.

Again, that's not what's meant by release. "Release" is a specific software development term.

"Release" is a word in the dictionary.

  7. Ok because when I look up what "release" means when it comes to software, all I get is the software development cycle, which has different sub-releases within.

  9. The problem is that you're speculating on rumors and possibilities.
A pre-order beta isn't something that's definitely going to happen, it's just one of several possibilities. It's currently undergoing a very private beta. There may or may not be more public testing in the future. Undecided.

If the game was in a state where we felt comfortable releasing it, it'd have been released. The dev team is just as desperate to release the game as all of you are to play it-- careers and livelihoods are depending on it. Nobody's holding anything back "just because". There's a lot of content ingame, but getting more gameplay in is the main focus of development right now.

Making something available to the public does not necessarily qualify it as release, is the point.

And when you use a word in a context in which jargon is expected, expect it to be treated as jargon.

In other words, when you use the word "release" in a software development context, expect it to be understood in that context.

You can absolutely 'release' an unfinished beta version of the game. You just don't say 'the game has released' or anything like that, you call it... a beta release, to separate it from a beta test. Also, I doubt an internet gaming forum qualifies as an environment in which jargon is expected. We're not all software developers here.

  12. *sigh* alright, you can remain the expert. Us plebes will just have to remember to bow to your expertise.

Seriously though, if you want to be considered an expert, choose your words more carefully. If you flippantly say "lolz, it's not a release" don't start arguing that everyone else is using terminology inappropriately when you can't even keep it straight yourself.

For another time, you can release a beta, but a beta is not a release.

    You're talking about software development.

I've had my terminology straight the entire time. And I don't know why you're acting all defensive. I guess I'm sorry you don't like having things explained and learning about stuff?

    You re totally wrong.
    Battle isnt done yet.
    Random crashes everywhere.
    Tons of bugs.
Only level 1 planets for the time being.
    Procedural Generator isnt yet complete.
    Monster Behavior.
And list continues with many other errors that i could list.

  15. No, I don't like being condescended to by a person who can't see how/won't acknowledge that what they said was unclear.

A equals B but B does not equal A. This is what you're going with? I'm out.

I'm not being condescending toward anyone. It's not like I'm saying, "haha wow what moron how could you not know that."

It's understandable that people who aren't developers wouldn't understand development jargon. Which is why I explained it.

No, in that sentence the word is being used two different ways. You can release any version of a piece of software, but that does not necessarily make it "a release" in the development context. Which is why to say it's "a beta release" is erroneous. You can release a beta, but a beta is not a release.

  18. No you didn't use those words. But what you did do is treat what everyone else said as wrong, and post links to the definition of jargon, rather than just say "it's jargon" like a normal human being.

The fact still remains that as far as I can find "release" means RTM, like you seem to be using it, but the term release, when used in a software development context, also indicates things like "beta release", "alpha release", "release candidate". So if someone uses the word, while not talking about RTM, yet they still use it appropriately, why not acknowledge that "release" can refer to several things?

  19. Can we stop arguing in here?
Wyvern didn't mean to be condescending, and there's no point in arguing technicalities.
