    No, there are still bugs.
Also, they need to improve the AI and give monsters attack animations.
I don't know how they are going to give creatures with a huge, randomly generated combination of parts, attack animations that will look good for each one though :poptop:
I mean, Tiy could really use another year to make this game perfect.

I am extremely impatient. But I will wait.

Many games that would have gone on for a long time with fantastic content die prematurely because the user base demands the game early ... and they get it.

A game's success is based on a few things:
    • Company / Developer Reputation
    • Public Relations
    • Release
    • Content
Not really sure how Starbound is doing in terms of advertising, but Chucklefish has a decent reputation, with Tiy having a good reputation with the fan base due to his experience with Terraria. Their public relations has been fantastic, with top-notch interaction in the community and hosting events.

This leaves only two factors to still be considered: Release and Content.

Content I can safely assume will be way too awesome for mortal brains to comprehend, so that shouldn't be a problem in the least. The Release will the major contributing factor to the release of Starbound. When it comes out, people will be swarming to the game to play it. It will be this first week that is the most important -- if people like it, word of mouth will spread and more purchases will be made (and at the higher, non-sale price point).
However, if people are put off by the release, not as much sales will be generated and less people will play, severely reducing the "half-life" of the game.

Best to wait until the entire game is finished and all polished up.

  4. I'm still not sure what makes adding the story on the "official relase date" any different than any other major update that will go on post-release. Look at how much content Terraria added in 1.1.1 or whatever. If you'd known they were working on that, would you have considered everything prior to that the "full game"?

If the game doesn't have enough content, then it shouldn't be released. But if someone's willing to pay money for what you have right now, why stop them?

Don't need beta for game like this, just let them finish the game, it will come out when it will be done and ready!

Don't forget the factor of reviews. Most reviews are written at release and rarely edited later. Problems at launch will permanently tarnish the reputation of the game no matter how many people try to combat it with word of mouth.

  8. If it's not a finished product, they don't feel comfortable releasing it. It would be without some of the magic, the mystery...

  9. A review likely wouldn't be published until the official release date, so a pre-release beta shouldn't change much in that regard. Heck, most AAA-title reviews take into account the near-certainty of "day one patches" when they're written, so I doubt reviewers would go too hard on an early beta. Even so, no one's asking to play the game now. The thread is (or I assume it is, based on the IRC chat which heralded it) asking about a playable version released between the gameplay polishes and the story development, and I'd say the gameplay on its own would warrant a pretty good review anyway.

    1. Patience is a virtue.
    2. You can't "force" a beta to happen.
    3. If there was a beta, you likely wouldn't be included in it. (Any neither would I, or most random people on this forum.)

    JUST WAIT.

  12. Public beta is already a possibility. This is the community trying to influence a decision, not force one.

Possible, but highly unlikely. We don't even have the character creator yet. (even if that's totally irrelevant)

If you read the OP, he says force.

gotta admit, we heard about that character creator and then poof ! nothing

  15. We don't? I saw the picture so I assumed it was done. As for the OP, well... I can't say I agree with that particular choice of words. Be that as it may, I would still prefer the pre-release option. I just won't be aggressive about it.

There's actually a disadvantage to have a beta. Time. It takes developer time to create a separate thing for us which is just basically a preview (that I don't think will have online features). Said developers could be using said time to continue making that game so it'll be super awesome... Err, see where I'm going on with this?

Beta requires time. Time could be used on the actual game to make a better game. A better game means we have fun. We do want to have fun... right?
