About the Beta / Alpha stuff, you're arguing semantics, the game will come out when it comes out, they can call it what they like.

About the memory editor, Terraria is written in C# and XNA, Starbound is written in C++ and either a self written framework or something like SFML. So no, they aren't the same at all. There are probably concepts that are used in both.

Edit: Also reposting my suggestion about difficulty / planet diversification here, incase anyone is interested (and in the hope that maybe Tiy or someone else sees it): http://community.playstarbound.com/...orry-for-the-delay.39732/page-35#post-1408359

Don't quote things proving my point and acting like you're proving the opposite. That's just showing how misinformed, and how little research you are doing into what is being said. You quoted exactly what I said a Beta is. Lol Good job, and thank you.

The points being made are VERY sound when it comes to the direction of the game. It is clear you all lack understandings on how we develop software and games. Did you just get into gaming, or are you just completely ignorant in general? The developer DOES NOT decide what a beta is, they either know what they're doing, or they don't. It's as simple as that. A published product means it has PASSED it's goal for being a near complete product, or it would not be 'published' as you say.

There is a horrifically mind boggling difference between drawing out mundane game-play, and making it interesting and challenging at the same time. If I can't challenge myself and go to a level above my level cap, what is the point? Please explain it, cause that goes against every game ever made with a level system for gear and your character. You ALWAYS go to places a level or two ahead to LEVEL up. Otherwise you'd be XP grinding like on WoW like a little kid trying to beef up their character without actually playing the game and challenging themselves.

It seems like you guys are the ones that need your hand held throughout the game and can't take a little heat from a monster 3x times your level to get that awesome loot that could be held in the chest just over yonder. That's what makes a game. Not mundane same-leveled creatures, and items, across an ENTIRE "quadrant" as they call it... and then just to get to the next one and deal with the same scenario all over again, everything dying in a hit or two, and nothing being challenging, making it really no point to levels, weapon levels, or anything. Might as well just have set damage all throughout the game and just let people do it. Then you'll see why the less dynamic games of the 90's didn't do so well when they tried to call themselves a RPG.

if they are using C++ and primarily development on Linux, no fucking wonder they have optimization issues. Lol Also Terraria lost XNA long ago.

I am using the memory editor right now and just tested it myself to confirm and yes it works for both Terraria and Starbound.

and for all those who think I hate this game bla bla bla. No I enjoy the game I would just love it to be a great game. Just certain things in the future fixed ect. Not like "FIX THE DAM THING NOW" It will happen over time. Also I will still say till the end of time that this is an ALPHA.

The only thing i can think of is pixels is kinda like a running joke which i've assumed all of you have gotten and the reason you need pixels to craft with is because well everything is made of pixels so you need them for everything...... although the fact that certain things cost more pixels in the same classification doesn't jive if it coest 200 pixels to make a pickaxe it should cost 200 pixels to make a pickaxe u know ;p

You know I had this huge wall of text in my head declaring many points of importance....then I went back through the thread and....between the mod and a few others they already hit the big points. Chill. We are less than two weeks into beta. there is work to be done. and if you watch some of their streams or consider that they have already released more than 4 patches in LESS than two weeks? They are busting some serious keister to get this game going. So relax some and don't have a heart attack over the unfinished beta not being finished a week into the beta.

Side Note. Anyone else getting tired of people dragging this whole beta thing out and being impatient for the awesome that is coming? I feel like I have said this almost exact line too many times to too many different people.

I don't mind the "item needs description" as it makes me excited for what's to come. I save a lot of them and wait to see what they turn into.

The alpha vs beta thing is interesting. A lot of games are doing that these days, including ESO (which was far, far less finished than this game yet called itself a beta). I have also noticed more games being released with day-one bugs or serious balance problems. However, I feel the devs are working hard to balance everything right now--harder than some big name companies with a lot more money. The past year has been spent playing betas I thought had a lot of potential that were subsequently released without the devs following any of the numerous suggestions that were given by players (suggestions that were near universal) yet think the game is complete. This is because they called an alpha game a beta game and went about an alpha game with the mentality of being in the final, beta stage before release. In other words, it's like thinking you're almost done with a test so you rush and don't have to try as hard. I haven't seen that yet as updates are frequent and significant.

While I agree with what you said about the alpha part, the rest seems to be a bit too hard on a game where the devs are obviously working hard to listen to the community.

Repeating wrong information doesn't make it right either.

First off the term beta as far as game development is losing all meaning. Sometimes its really finished and they are testing servers and "release" a week later. other times like this one its close to an alpha and things are not finished. The developers only released it now because the community really wanted in and the was the earliest they were willing to let people play it. They have made it clear what state the game is in and what to expect. a lot of the current issues may be fixed by planed features like a stance system that was hinted at a few patches ago or the quest system which is really not fished yet.

I was with you up until the Terraria comment. If you had to use an external program just to see similarities, just so you could scream the word "clone" ... well, then it's not a clone.

And even if it was.. it's not really a big deal, is it? Is the game fun? Does it look like the final product will be fun? That's good enough for me.

I like how you admit it at least.

On a serious note: Spare us the childish "I'm right, you're wrong!" attitude. The developers themselves say it's beta, so that is what it is. It can't be argued as the terms Alpha and Beta have all been used to different meaning by the developer to classify what they believe to be the state of their game. If the developer says it's a certain one, it is irrefutable fact that it is so.

With that said, by all means, keep parading around like you're right and everyone else is wrong; it's rather amusing.

  12. Slywyn

    Slywyn Existential Complex

    So, like...

    Beta:
"Testing of new software", not "trying out complete software"

    Note what this is not:
    This is a BETA.

    Not a finished RELEASE CANDIDATE

There are bugs. The game is not complete.

What is the definition of alpha testing?
So if you would be so kind as to read, an alpha is very clearly internal(NOT PUBLIC) testing done by the developer.

By every definition except for your own(incorrect one), this is a beta release.

No I ain't right all the time and in a lot of cases I do learn that I am wrong.... but in this case I have already learned what an Alpha is and what a Beta is.... this is an Alpha.

So please go around parading like you think you know everything it's fun isn't it ;)

Damn forums are getting rapidly filled with kiddies having no idea about gamedev, hopefully this community wont end like Minecraft one.
Learn to read. Devs stated many times that this version of beta will lack many features. If you buy a game and don't read anything about it its your problem so quit whining on forums. They name it beta, its beta. Its up to the developer.

Enigmare i see you are professional pro proprogrammerer, i eagerly await games made by your hands. Right now looking at you i just see yet another kiddie trying to prove hes right, like its some kind of competition. Hint: Its not.

While I agree with some points of the OP, is it so important to argue whether this should be called beta or alpha? Would a different name change anything? Most people only know thatt both is an unfinished game. I think the name is the least of problems...

Here's the deal, it doesn't matter if it's called a Beta or an Alpha, parts of both definitions fit the game currently. More to the point if you are actually getting irate about this then you need to step away from the computer because it is simply not something worth having actual emotions about. A large part of this thread has simply been name calling and inappropriateness from both sides of the issue. This is a warning to everyone, play nice and stop being dicks otherwise I will have to go back through the whole thread and warn every post appropriately.

Ultimately the Alpha/Beta label shouldn't matter at all, given that the devs have spelled out what they mean by it. It's really nothing more than a semantical argument. Whatever it "should" be called, the devs have spelled out what they actually mean by using the beta label right here http://playstarbound.com/how-the-beta-is-going-to-work/ Any supposed confusion that's the result of the beta label should be cleared up by that page.
