The update to the update failed to fix the Mac crash as soon as it's loaded.

Yes, i´m suffering the same problem when i try to open the game from steam but if i launch it from the in the executable localized at the path:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound

It runs OK (some times takes a couple of minutes to open, but always opens)

So it seems like a good number of people in this forum are going rah rah rah due to the update issues, most likely beacuse they were actually affected. And we have a good number of ppl who are going rah rah rah beacuse it is a beta and anything can happen, deal with it, etc. Granted, both sides have valid points in their arguments.

Yes, the game is in beta and the developers are allowing consumers to play the game in this state so that we can be of service to them. We as consumers have enough faith in this game and/or the dev team that we are willing to pay $15 to partake in this beta. As beta-testers, it is essentially our responsibility to help this game and perhaps the developers grow, although some might not feel that way since they paid or some don't feel that way simply because they only want to play. But people, lets be reasonable. There is no need to be completely blind to the fact that problems happened that could have been avoided and there is not need to be compeltely blind to the fact that these devs do care, more than some developers of AAA games.

    1) As everyone can agree, we can appreciate the fact that the dev acknowledge the fact that they f'ed up. They were transparent enough to give us a technical explanation as to what is going on.

    2) This is a beta, problems can happen.

    3) The problem that came with this update does suck, especially for those that had items they didn't want to lose or have a "broken" character.

    4) Could this "wide-spread" issue [wide-spread since this happened to a good number of users, not just 1 or 2] have been avoided? Yes, it could have. The developers have us as a resource, which includes our files. I can't seem to find the statement, but I believe a developer stated that their test characters happened to have full inventories, thus not making this issue apparent before deployment. But if developers already have "live" test-data [our characters/ships/universes], then they could have simply asked some users to supply their data for testing purposes before deploying. It is not out of the question, and the people who are trying to contribute to the game would have seen it on one of the channels.

    5) Rollbacks SHOULD be possible, maybe not for the character data, but at least for the engine itself. Developers in a correct environment will have source control to check in their files, so that changes can be tracked and roll-back if needed. Developers should also be branching their code down a different path once they being developing a new version of the product (Salty -> Angry -> Shamalama Koala) so that if there is a bad deployment (this one), they could re-deploy the last working version and go back to testing the new version. No, having a product in alpha/beta doesn't mean developers don't have to set-up the right environment for themselves. This is the standard that all developers should follow, regardless of the quality of the developer.

With that wall of text out of the way, let's just all continue on with our lives, and let the devs do what they have to do. Chucklefish, thanks for being transparent but please remember that we are here to assist with pre-deployment testing, not just post-deployment.

TL;DR: Beta = single problems ok, not wide-spread. Developers being transparent, good. Developers not using live test-data before deployment or not having rollbacks to deploy, bad. Carry on.

I'm confused, is this issue "fixed" then? because when I restored my backup from 3 days ago it still makes half my chests disappear - the ones with all my ore and seeds in - I'm somewhat confused as to what this "hotfix" actually did.

One more method if you have : if you have early version of starbound directory copy it, launch, take all items from chest's, save, copy files from "players" and "universe", delete them from main directory, and pastе from old version. anyway you have items, and sometimes chest's appears again.

I'll just look at the source code and find out... oh..wait.. nope can't do that! I expect containers crash the server for the same reason it crashes some clients: Bad code. The latest round of hotfixes hopefully/probably fixed it. I'll find out later I expect once the dust settles. Its pretty obvious the server you're running is <10 players and there is nothing wrong with that, but its hardly a good basis for determing what problems exist. Like it or not, the multiplayer community is what will keep players around. Starbound doesn't have the content to keep most players interested in single player for more than a few hours. Large servers are the lifeblood and we need the tools to run them!

I'm dead serious about releasing the information on packet/file structure. The starbound devs don't have to do anything beyond that for us and we'll take care of the rest. If they can't handle the server code, we'd like to do it ourselves.

"The only fix for this issue right now is to remove your shipworld and allow the game to regenerate them, or restore from backup if you have one. You will lose the contents of your ship if you do not have a backup."

this isnt actually true, i had a backup of my game file which i take after each play session cause of all the blips, i deleted my ingame file from the folder and then restored it after playing the game and letting the ship file be remade, afterwards i replaced it with my backup and my ship appears with all items but the locker is still missing...

so either way you loose your locker contents full stop.

i knew it was too good to be true, characters and ships are safe but may wipe worlds, lol my home planets is fine and my ship locker i stored all my rare finds , diamonds, ores, voxels all gone.

weeks of work and effort, cheers guys.

I am downloading the latest patch right now and am curious what to find :geek: The only real "problem" is that this game is just too much fun, to just wait for the release to happen ;) Ah, this BETA play is just like adventuring in uncharted lands

I logged in and saw my refinery, which had stored over 100,000 pixels and had a fresh stack of 1000 diamond ore in it for refining was simply gone. I X'd out immediately. Hoarded many items and hadn't checked any containers, just one of which had stacks upon stacks ore ingots and diamonds. While I do have backups, posts in this thread also tell me that's futile. :lod:

Yeah, beta, understandable and the excuse can be easily tossed, but this thread basically starts with "Oops! Wiped your shit!" rather than an update that purposefully wipes all ship inventories. Oh well, time will tell. Hope the cute Floran NPC I pollinated still exists.WHY MUST LOVE SUFFER SO?

possible fix to prevent it from recurring, one you may have already thought of, do a bubble sort with the highest numbers rising to the top when a container is closed then put a non zero null object to replace the zeroes then save the data, when accessed replace the null object with a empty space before the container opens.

Back in the eighties i did a bubble sort routine in BASIC on a Commodore Pet, it could sort a 1000 item list in less than a second, with modern computers you wouldn't even notice any lag.

    just trying to help.

For all those complaining about traumatic losses of their in-game fortunes. You can just install creative mod or such and cheat back what you lost. I know its a bummer, but it will get you back on track. Remove the mod after you think you've approximated your fortunes. Now... if only they could fix the stability issues.

By contrast, I had just finished hording all my stuff to my ship (because.. you know.. no wipes) and it's all still there and excessable:

This is just the new update, no hot-fixes.

Now i'm not bashing the staff of any sort here, however, this issue is quite drastic and right in your face and it does bother me that it wasn’t detected before release. It also bothers me that people keep using the beta defence.... Here in a more extreme example that’s like saying that a serial killer is just insane and needs help, though the serial killer bluntly stated that he enjoyed killing and he continues it no matter how many times he is "helped".
Also kind of bothers me that despite I check forums and the sort everyday I did not see this update till steam started updating my Starbound.

So hopefully things are learned, things are fixed, flamewars are quelled, and I hope Chucklefish manages to dodge such bumpy roads in the future.

Great, the back-up didn't do anything. I'm using mac and the storage locker has also been wiped from the game. Lost all my chests but one, which contains some bars. Lost my pixel refinery as well but my nano stove, furnace, metalwork station, robot crafting table and cooking table are still there. Storage locker needs fixing...rapido!

Question. I've updated the game but I haven't logged into single player or multiplayer yet. Should I wait? Will it prevent all my stuff from being gone?

Ergh, checked my ship after a sip of liquid courage, and I'm missing the lockers that had the most value to me. why.jpg

Guess it's time to use the creative mod. I hate to "cheat", but I legitimately earned my hoard and I intend to get it back.

Know what's funny? Haven't played in several days until just a few minutes ago, so this hotfix hadn't done much of anything.
