Yeah. it's right. Can't be undone. BUT it can perhaps be prevented or attenuated in the future. WHEN a fail-module gets implemented. When the user may decide wether to save the game or not. Or to have multiple Save-Slots? Y'all talk about our complaints... I can't see suggestions to make it better. It's not unimportant that devs learn from such issues. And if they do, I'll might be a bit less dissatisfied. Last but not least: DON'T EVER repeat the scentence "You must've been knowing that this happens. It's a beta/early access/...." And SweFox: If you are that wise... why don't you solve this issue? No constructive ideas so far by you only "That are all your personal issues. CF never ever made a misstake". Please do me a favor: Go and tell that your cat - or wall ... maybe your bedstand. Good night. Chucklefish: Please! Make this Game more failsafe. Show the customers that you care! It's not to late...
It could. But why? This is a beta, and yes, I know you don't want to hear it, but it is the truth. Spending development time to ensure stuff "never fails" is usually a futile endeavor. What if the code to prevent against bugs bugs out. Do you then need code to prevent against the thing that prevents data loss bugging out? You can see how silly that will end up. Honestly, if you bought Early Access you should have known what you were getting yourselves in for. It is a harsh truth, I agree, and it is always regrettable when something like this happens - but honestly, development time is best spent actually working on the game. If a few people get some data loss - that is just the way it is. Regrettable, but no less true. Basically, you can't please everybody all the time, especially during a beta. Those of you who think you've had significant or important losses - cheat it in. That is the one time that I think cheating is acceptable Everybody wins then!
So I found a bit of a fix.... I'm sticking with it since its bug free and fail safe. STEP 1: Go to your old file...grab all your favourite goodies and place them in your own inventory along with placing a chest or two in your personal inventory. STEP 2: START A NEW CHARACTER...think of it as passing on your genetics. This new character will have a home planet with coordinates. WRITE THEM DOWN They should look like -32452242 -23423424 STEP 3: Save and quite your new character. STEP 4: Load up your old character...travel to the location of your new characters ALPHA world and place all your rare items there...In chests or even just kill your character there. STEP 5: Load up your new character again and beam down...(to that same planet) YOUR OLD CHARACTER LEFT YOU A PRESENT voila! All of your old characters gear...transferred to a new and safer file... THAN BACKUP. Copy that good ol' steam folder. and wait. For a better tomorrow. and a brighter patch,
Speaking from the server side of things... at this point, I'd rather they just take their current programmers, pay them a bunch of windfall money from the million copies sold fund and tell them to go party, have fun, and don't touch the game.... and then hire some new senior level talent to get the server and basic engine in workable shape. Feature lock for the next few months. Every patch has been making the server less stable. And this patch that was supposed to fix servers makes them inoperable entirely! There is no way you can prevent players with cludged up containers from joining and crashing your server. We still have no admin control or even a basic system to put control in place. Better yet... give us the packet and file structures. We'll make our own server software!
Apologies have been made in these forums by the devs, and they DO learn by their mistakes, as many of us do. Many MANY top-end multi-million dollar games released as "finished" by the top game creators/publishers are littered with bugs, even game-breaking ones, every month it seems. For me, it's all about perspective; I know not everyone feels the same, but I would never assume to tell anyone how to feel.
Well, I have a backup of my ship, but it isn't helping. If I let the game regen me a new shipwold file, my ship has it's storage locker. If I load my backup shipworld file, my ship is in tact with all of my decorations, but I do not have a storage locker. How exactly are we supposed to implement a backup file if it doesn't work? Also, I lost several storage crates that work working just fine for me last night. Specifically (and most importantly) the crates that held all of my metal bars and ore. Should I even bother playing for a few days until all of this is resolved? I'd hate to start regrowing my collection only to lost it again.
A good idea, and I thought about doing just that. The problem is: the valuable items worth transferring are already gone with the patch! So I keep my pre-patch backups and hope for a hotfix. If that won't work, I can as well play my old chars and start over with what is left.
I think people is overreacting seriously, as far i see, dev chucklefish team is really really nice with their customer. not like Three Rings who tends to keep silent and never say about stuff, and barely heard their fanbase. , chucklefish heard and even did a patch that partially fixed the problem around dunno 5 am? if they did in that hours that mean: they really care about their game and fans. i think people should be grateful about that not many devs do that. or better yet: no many devs love their game some much. "You must've been knowing that this happens. It's a beta/early access/...." << this, is beta never said the game was about to be a fail proof, i mean cmon they give you the chance to "test the game" or like you would think "the chance to play" the game. they even wouldnt let you play the game and tease us with screenshots about how the work is going and do private playtesting, but what chucklefish did? let us "play" but also to "help improve" their game. what worries me its that chucklefish after reading all those overreactions would start acting more like Three Rings and never interact with their fanbase a lot. i hope that never happens . what i learned from this? every end of week or before they launch the update: to make a backup of my stuff, to prevent things like this happen. after all we are testing the product since its beta so with this experience we should be prepared about any problem what could happen after the update. this kinda make me remember the times when Doom Builder come out, making my maps and stuff and suddenly: Lost all my progress of my map and was a map i was working for dunno 2 months? yeah all the effort gone to the trash, but did i got angry? yeah a bit, but i learned something: to keep a backup of my maps. so why we cant do this? i dont see how we cant do the same thing, chucklefish did the fix they kindly answer us and heard us, now its up to us to keep a backup of our files to avoid troubles like this. sorry for the big wall text :/ but i think people is overeacting of this, i lost stuff too, i set again my lockers and star gathering the stuff i got. if the stuff i got was on a planet i found thanks for the coordinates megathread, then i just going to get online in a server and get them back, big deal. seriously people, dont be like that, the dev teams cared lot so much this game they really seems to enjoy working on it. thats something really really nice from them. if you feel really bad to lose your stuff, as other user said: grab starcheat add the stuff you lose in your inventory even if you feel mad or like you want revenge add more stuff that you didnt have and done! karma balanced.
I ru I run a server. I haven't had even remotely close to the level of issues that you have. Why on earth would people with messed containers crash your server? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Hello! I also tun a server, but aditionally to the disappeared boxes, i cannt use beds. I read that the latter problem had been fixed or was I hallucinating? =) Kind regards, Rak
I still acknowledge that this is a beta, and that this is the way of it. I just wanted to say thank you for the hasty repair, and that I am grateful for your openness with the Starbound community.
it is not a beta, it's real alpha. Again a lot of errors and the server dies. When I fix it? How much more can we suffer? Where commands restart? Kick?
In fact, I lost 11 boxes and their contents (500 bars,a lot of seeds, food, decorative, weapôns (2 legendary weapons) and much more +++....). THANK YOU again. Can you give me 300 bars of each ore, 15000 pixels and a very powerful legendary weapon please, it would be very fair play your part.
How are they supposed do do that for you? This isnÄt an MMO where the dev's can put things in your inventory when they want. Just install a mod which can give you these things, take the things and edelete it again.
I managed to pretty much scan in every item into my 3D printer. There's no way to transfer that info, now is there?
I have to say it is much appreciated that you guys actually take the time to fill us in on whats going on. Stuff lost? No problem. That will be a write off as space pirates stole my stuff while I was on world. Having to start over? It'll be a relative of my first character that died in space and wants to know what happened. Anyway, thanks again for actually feeling bad and trying to help us unlike alot of other games out there.
