such flame... Beta expectations, paid expectations, regardless of either case, why couldn't we just have Exit Without Save? Fine, we can expect game breaking bugs, but then why shouldn't we have an easier way to negate the effects of those bugs, rather than forcing everyone to accept them?
Because BETA isn't about negating the effects of bugs, it's about eliminating them permanently. Shit will be broken in beta. If you don't want to deal with that, then wait for the full game release. If things like this happen with release code, then you are more than entitled to get pissed. Assume things will go south when participating in any beta program. And assume the worst when they do. That is how you go about handling your betas.
Good to see you didn't even read the post you felt the urge to reply on. So here the abridged version in a language even you might understand: Wipes and bugs in beta: expected and okay. Confronting us with avoidable problems which break our files: not that okay
Negating effects of bugs and eliminating bugs are not mutually exclusive. We can have both. I can play with the bugs existing, make reports, help with the process.....and then not save. Everyones happy. What is wrong with that? Why do you prefer that we be forced to save, when there is little reason to? In fact, not forcing saves enables us to find bugs better. We wouldn't be afraid of totally screwing everything up, for the sake of bug finding. We could more easily recreate scenarios that cause bugs.
So here the abridged version in a language even you might understand: You are butthurt, and want to vent out. Because, what do you expect to happen now?
Well I started a new character and I'm having fun, but I will miss my high velocity sniper rifle and 0.90 attack speed rocket launcher. It is weird not having gravity bubble and other techs, you really just stop using certain mechanics once you have high end stuff. I noticed the launcher still says Furious Koala up top, though it does say Enraged Koala at the bottom now. Will coords for Furious Koala still work? Also, for those of us starting new characters, will we need to worry about this kind of bug ever showing up again? I would like to think it can't happen again now that the content system has been updated, but is this final? If not what kind of precautions can be taken, other than obsessive back ups?
What I expect now is that I will continue to play starbound, maybe start a new char since my ship is kind of useless right now. I am not "butthurt", because I expect a wipe any day in a beta. What bugs me is that this kind of problem would be avoidable, and testing updates for at least a minute before release is something I would expect from a game with a couple of thousands of customers, even in a beta.
Hey guys, Please keep discussing the topic at hand, but don't get mad at video games. I don't like giving out warning points, but name-calling, etc isn't okay.
This is a beta, if you're aware of your characters and about wipes, it's better to wait for the full release. I'll clear my saved content too and start again. The game is too much lagged to keep old content. But I agree about playing in high tier take off of you that feel of explorer, where you're forced to use ropes to climb, and flares to light your way inside caves, etc. Maybe doing high tier techs a bit more expensive in energy could make me play the old fashioned way again ^^
all i can really say is OOPS DOH !!!! it happens to the best of us. reminds me of the time i spent 1/2 day trying to figure out why a website i had built just kept going to google homepage instead of the sites homepage only to discover i had copy/pasted the wrong prewritten code from my files *felt a bit silly*
In case I'm repeating myself (as you do...): This ALL was no problem, IF CF HAD INTEGRATED AN AUTOMATIC BACKUP! Damn! Is it so hard to understand? AN Not everybody reds the whole forum to find a side-entry which tells me how to backup! I didn't know how to... i just figured out (after analyzing the file/folder-structure) two weeks ago, how i MIGHT save my data because i installed a mod. Any other simple user might not even know where to find the folder in it's system. Not everybody (and yes even not EVERY DAMN EARLY ACCESS-BETA-USER - in fact we are NOT TESTERS - testers get paid or test as volunteer) is an IT-professional! Some only think: Hey there's a new Indie-Game - hmm some say it's cool and worth buying it. Why not?!? And those are THOSE you loose now. I think that only ~50-70% care about this issue and search for reasons/solutions the other 30-50% are angry or resign, though. And perhaps 10% will never come back. Is that constructively enough? It was constructive if CF would do their job right - and INFORM anybody. It's NOT UP TO THE USER (beta or not!) to get informations about failures in patches. It's like a car-producer would say: "oh... well that rims got some issues and may break when faster than 60.... but we'll tell that to the customers if they ask for it" Thats my kinda view. <sarcasm > dont judge me... I've never developed software nor working in lager companies as engineer ... I don't know how things are going... </sarcasm>
just a few questions: so i did a backup of my stuff before to play the last patch they did after the patch that would supposed to give the valentine stuff and the new microphone, but that mean there would be anohter patch after this one? or this one is the patch people is talking about?. i lost some stuff but not something to cry about it. lost like 8 lockers which have anyway junk stuff (only hurt me to lost the locker with the boss sword and my cabinet full of fuel ores and spawners) but besides that isnt a big deal since i can just gather them around. i ask this so i can start gathering my stuff back if this was the last "patch" that would fix things.
Would you please cut back on the constant flow of abrasive and inconsiderate replies to everyone? You really aren't helping with the current situation.
I just thought I'd put my two cents in this conversation as the pure vitriol being thrown at ChuckleFish is ridiculous. I understand that it is a beta - and that you paid for it. The fact you paid for it does not mean the game is bug free. It would be impossible to promise that, and impossible to ensure that data corruption does not happen. The developers at ChuckleFish are human - sure, they made a mistake. Sure, it resulted in lost data - but at the end of the day it is to be expected. Bugs are a fact of software development - and in a beta period - paid or not - even more so. To state that this was "avoidable" is misguided. Sometimes, despite all your testing, bugs go unnoticed. See for instance, the bugs which make it into release - often crippling bugs - of other games. This is no different. Do you really think that before release, no-one decided to load an existing world and see if it updated correctly - DESPITE the fact that the Lua side updating of existing worlds was a feature? I personally would find that very hard to believe. A "roll back" as some have suggested would also do no good. The information that has been updated inside the game files is probably not backwards compatible with the previous update, which would most likely also cause corruption. At this point, they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. ChuckleFish have done the best they can - they put information out. They spread it through a few places - admittedly though, not through the main channel. However, this is the age of social media - and when you hope to get things fixed fast, you just try and get the news out where you can. They even were extremely transparent and said exactly what the issue was. By lambasting them due to the nature of the error you are going to make it less likely that such transparency is given in the future - which would be a real shame. I tend to ramble, so I'll try and wrap it up here. ChuckleFish, keep up the good work. I am glad that you took steps to inform people. As a developer, I do appreciate your transparency in this matter and know you will use this as a learning experience. TL;DR - bugs happen, can't undo, just move forward!
Then don't buy an EA game if you're unable to drag and drop folders or unable to find fixes yourself.
Spent 40 hours collecting different species of trees and plants. As I am a Botanist I found it amusing. I spent nearly 10 hours looking for the final one, the Rainbow Tree, which I did find a few hours before the patch.....The seeds of that single tree were in the locker...along with over 4000 materials..... NOT going to start over. I rather use a mod to get back my stuff. Starting again and again AND AGAIN Is getting extremely Boring and Frustrating! It's BETA, providing a way to aquire minerals of every tier should be an option, especially after so many wipes. I want to test the game but advancing is hard for a "filthy casual". It's okay to wipe everything when the game launches, that would bring everyone to the sae level, nly providing experience to those who played the Beta.
For those interested, one thing I noticed is that even though certain containers are gone, the collision for them remains. I can stand on top of a locker that isn't visible/there anymore. Also I noticed that there is now a frame drop when entering a structure like a dungeon or village, not sure if this is somehow related to the code that caused the chests to disappear in the first place. Perhaps there are Lua scripts that start running once you get close to a structure which is causing the frame drop. Are there any dev command that people can run in order to display stats within the game, kind of like pressing F3 in Minecraft, would be a nice feature to help troubleshoot.
I would be fine if they still did character wipes, I can deal with that. But the thing is they said that would not happen anymore and with the state of things they may as well still be doing it. That is why I'm asking if this new content system is expected to be final or if we should expect it to be updated in the future. It seems like they know what they did wrong, so I'm not too worried about it, but with new items and stuff being added constantly who knows what could happen? They may be better off bringing back wipes! It feels good to play a new character, I had gotten very lazy with my high level gear. The game is challenging when you start out but gets very easy, re-balancing techs and high end melee weapons should be a priority, as should overhauling gun damage and ammo types to make them more viable. I was just crushing everything with my bone hammer before and I loved to use my guns, but they were weak in comparison and could not always stop a rushing alien.
