I have spent the past hour trying every single thing that I can to get this game to stop lagging. My FPS drops down so hard when I go underground to mine or if i go into one of those monkey bases with the tesla laser things. I have no problem running other games but this game just lags a ton. I am playing on openGL of course too. How do the devs not lag like crazy when they post their videos? Is there some sort of secret to making this game run right?
It has to be a problem with your computer, most people who play this game experience absolutely no FPS drops, not just the devs. If you're not using a modded client or the Nightly builds that's the only explanation.
Nightly build is not an accurate representation of the final game. Hence not optimized. You will want to wait till the next stable if you want slight improvement. Or final release if you want moderate improvement. I wont say there will be a complete 180 turn around in performance. But you should see 30 - 40% improvement at least by final release.
Windows or Linux? There's a reasonable chance that it's a driver issue. OpenGL support is apparently substandard on Windows.
My game performance has always been inexplicably poor too. This is an old PC with a hodgepodge of parts I will admit, but Starbound runs just too slow for what it appears to be accomplishing. I also achieve perfectly playable performance in plenty of other games that seem to be no less demanding. AMD Phenom 9550 quad-core at 2.2ghz Geforce GTX 550 Ti 5GB (yes its five) of ram I am also pretty sure I've explored every FPS trick that the world has to offer.
I'm getting a lot of lag on the nightly, when I'm in "busy" areas. Places with lots of decorations etc., such as a Glitch castle. This was not an issue on the stable build, not to this extent at least. So, clearly, some of the changes they've made have slowed the game considerably. OpenGL version, on a Windows machine. Hardware is old, but again, this is new to the nightly vs the stable. So it's not just my machine, it's something new in the code.
