Have you tried taking a look at the game's files? Might have to do it manually.

I deleted the Universe and Player folders in the game directory, and that miiight have done it. I don't see the character anymore. Still verifying if I screwed anything up or not.

It needs to be easier to identify which character is which by filename rather than date changed.

Early beta after all, But still it's odd not to have those features you'd expect, Like re mappable keys or deleting worlds

Yeah, indeed seems like a weird feature to exclude.

Can someone help me? So I made a few characters and then I decided to delete them. I deleted the .player file that corresponded to the character I didn't want, and started the game. The game would't open. Every time I launch the game it shows the game icon and then just crashes after a second without showing any windows or anything.
I even tried putting back the file that I deleted and making sure I didn't delete any other files, but it still won't let me launch the game. I have a good character save so I don't want to wipe all my data and try to reinstall the game.

Does anyone know what I could do / what I did wrong?

P.S. I'm on a Mac and I have the requirements to run the game.

tl;dr - Long story short: I deleted a .player file, put it back in the game, and now the game crashes on launch.

Hey buddy same thing happened to me when I tried it on the Mac. I ended up having to reinstall twice to get the game working again. Long story short. Better wait for the devs to install a big fat delete button.

Yeah. But I pretty much have to make a new character now. I had an awesome cape and rare battle-ax on him. :'(

Milo: If it isn't too late, people are saying you have to delete the whole folder. Try dragging out the character files already in there, deleting the folder, starting the game up, creating a new character, and exit the game completely. Then, put the files back, and try launching again.

GUYS I FOUND A WAY! FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

    1. Go to your starbound folder, normally it's on C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound (for me it's there)

    2. Then go into the "player" folder. ((WARNING THIS IS ON THE OFFENDED KOALA UPDATE))

    3. Once you open up that folder, there's 3 files for ONE (1) player. If you have 6 files then you have 2 characters and so on...

    4. To find out which player file is who, open it up with Notepad or any other editing software.

    5. At the very first line it should say some very weird stuff, like >> (example) iehwfoinm >. awjnfoi NMEWHJF ijmnoil <<(then if you keep on reading...
STILL ON THE FIRST LINE -> it should say some letters than YOUR CHARACTER NAME. that's how you know who your character is.

    6. Now, find the character you don't want, then delete HIS or HER .METADATA || .SHIPWORLD || and his/her .PLAYER files.. They are below and above him Just
start counting them by 3's starting from above.

    HOPE THIS HELPED!!! -Blogvampire :ssssssssss:

*EDIT* -note that if you delete your character, you must restart Starbound in order for changes to be made - :)

AFAIK, the OP (and others) were already aware of this method. What he/she was asking was for a more "official" way of deleting a character, a button or something, instead of doing it manually.

What do you mean you don't have a "player" folder on your Starbound directory? It probably didn't installed correctly or you're not looking in the right place because the game MUST have that folder, there's no way around it, and its not a hidden one either.

If it is indeed missing a folder then make one yourself and rename it to "player" (without the quotes), start Starbound, make a character, play a little and go back to said folder to see if there's anything there.

I'm using a Mac and the only way I've found to actually do this is to drag out the player files (three to each player, like above) you want to preserve and delete the whole player folder. Then you need to manually recreate the player folder, titled exactly the same, yourself and drag the files back in. It should work. Restarting the game, creating a new character and then dragging the files back in afterwards only crashed the game for me.

I'm on a MAC, and can't get notepad to see my characters name. What's another kind of editing program that lets me see my name?

Its Beta, I'm sure their going to have a patch for that in the next update. You could also try going into starbound files & deleting the character information.
