Is there a point to building a house?

...I seriously can't find it on the wiki, where is it? I feel like I'm going insane digging through the biomes and weather pages.

On the biome page, click on any of the biomes (well, not any: choose one that's been around for a while, like Jungle). Scroll down and you'll see the Weather heading. Under that, it tells you the groups and what each one has.

Now, if it's wrong, it should be updated.

Oh, there it is. The weather arrangements stated in those biomes do make a lot of sense; I've seen those kinds of combinations before. But it's very likely that, due to the tinkering of meteor probability and the addition of new biomes, this information could be obsolete. The only way we'll truly know is if someone digs into the current programming and finds out how the weather is wired as it stands.

It's possible to also open up a world file in a text editor such as textpad or a hex editor of your choosing and search for meteor or acid (or other weather types). Just don't try to change anything, you may end up corrupting the file.

If you want my two cents: It depends on the person playing, to each their own. I've build around 4 houses now, all but my current have been destroyed by the elements, left behind, abandoned, ect. but I don't mind, I relocate and build another. I know it'll probably get destroyed or I'll grow bored and perfectionist and move, but I like to build in this game. It's fun for me. Maybe I'm easily entertained or just dumb, whatever. But the answer to your topic; technically speaking, is that there's no point in building a house in Starbound at all, beyond personal enjoyment. There's no in game incentive to do so besides limited shipspace at this stage, as you said. But if you love building and watching the destruction, cool. If you hate fussing with houses and metors and spontaneous combustion or whatever, that's great. If you want to just dig a pit in a planet and store all your loot in that, dig that pit. Power to you. Starbound is lawless. :/

It made me really happy when my first home got destroyed by a meteor, but maybe I'm strange.

You make a fair point, your ship basically IS your home.

However, I would like at some point to be able to find a planet (without meteors) that won't be erased in the future (post final planet-wipe), and build on that.
    Planets are bigger than ships.

once the money generating mechanics are put in, then there will be a reason to build on planets (for rent, farming or whatever else method to gain pixels)

But I still build a base on a nice planet. Space is cold and dark, I much prefer my feet on solid ground.

It's mainly preference. Ships have more and better benefits though.

I'm glad someone mentioned underground bases.

This question can only be answered by you since it falls to personal preference.

I mean for me the point of having a base/home is simply because I can and I like building, I really don't need some kind of greater reason or result to do so. Yeah sure natural disasters can make a mess of a persons hard work, but for me that's part of the risk.

When upgradable ships is added I get both, a home and a flag ship

You can't build this on a ship!

But really, it's about preference. If you just want a base of operations to store things and to keep crafting materials? Use your ship. It's the most convenient. If you want something that looks neat and uses all those pieces of furniture that you happened to collect over your time playing the game? Build a base on a planet.

If you're trying way too hard to be unique? Build it in a planet's core. ... wait a minute...

Haha I was going to suggest core building but thought better of it. I was thinking of they don't have the patience to build onbthe surfaces-- this wouldn't be any easier!

    Nice work though!

    Take your pick:

    1) If you can't stand the heat...
    2) Those servers are so cool, that...
    3) Water coolers are below, combine with space heater to get hot water.
    4) It's a replica of the Space Exploration program, in a planetary basement, so they have to pretend it's cold.
    5) Do you know why those golden bird emblems are angry? Because you ask too many questions.

Ive built a couple of houses but have yet to have anything cause it to asplode.

Also there is a practical use to a house and its to stop mobs from spawning around it. Though they could certainly add purpose to it. Would be nice if they eventually implement some kind of base defense.

Ideally one that doesn't randomly deactivate or shoot your own guards and NPCs (I'm looking at you, defense turret).
