I'll write in agreement..the game isn't too hard. Right now the big thing is just tedium, digging for goodies just isn't very exciting, many things just take too long to dig through, and there is no good way to find needed minerals directly, just blind dig through and hope for the best. Of course planet hopping can help fix that up.

Hmm...a suggestion is that the quest before making a beacon?

Quest to put fuel in the ship, then a quest to visit a nearby planet (same star system?). Then a quest to go to another star altogether.

Then finally the quest for the beacon..once its figured out what you need isn't in your quadrant and you need that upgrade.

Which we are in beta..so this stuff is whats being worked on anyway :).

Its refreshing to see a game with a harder difficulty and a bit of a learning curve. I hope they don't dumb the game down or make it any easier because so far I like it as it is. Besides death is just losing money anyway so, its not like Terreria where you lose all of your items and have to figure out where you died last to get all your items/equipment back.

I found the initial start very hard.. mainly because my default starting weapon decided to vanish after I made my hunting bow . then I chain died for a while figuring out the new mechanics for sand/silt.. :"hey this is cool........... aghhhhhhh" <splat>

Since I'm at this part of the game myself.... did you read the mission's text?

"Your ship engine is not yet strong enough to take you out of the alpha sector"
For those who did not know they could go to other planets... that's when I realized I could go to other planets since the alpha sector's map -had- more than one planet already. That's when I realized why coal's description meant it was a good source of fuel.
"Craft a distress beacon and maybe you'll be able to contact a larger ship."
"Make sure you're ready for anything before you do though!"
This for me was the biggest indication that activating the distress beacon wouldn't mean good. Admitedly, though, I had watched the old PAX videos of starbounds where they had people play the game and that a UFO came in at some point. So admitedly I was already guessing this might be what summon the actual UFO to you for you to fight. This is why when I read this I tried to priorizes gearing up for armor and weapons before doing anything else.
As it stand I'm still uncertain about summoning the UFO to me right away. I recall how it could wreck a player's house in the game. I might simply go to the stronger planets near by to try and grind gear.

Maybe even take a closer look at the avian village on the moon close-by to see if there could be interesting gear to purchase in prevision for the boss fight.

But to go back to the subject, when you read carefully you see that the devs did try to leave some indications of things to be careful about in the game.
Could it have it been written a bit more obviously?
Maybe, but there was still an effort of trying to warn/guide the player without hand-guiding them at every single step to the point of annoying the players as people often complaints in many other games.

So far, in my opinion though the game is not features complete yet I like how it already feels like a complete experience with the survival gameplay(taking the likes of Minecraft's hunger system, adding it's own system of environment/warmth to the mix), and the stuff like farming and bow-hunting(for meat) already in-game to add to this gameplay(where I've seen other games with a hunger systen,,,, but not yet all of the means bywhich you can meet this hunger need which further add to the difficulty in their case). And the whole of it in a nice platformer action sandbox game which already, in my opinion, leads to a well-polished 2d sandbox experience which already can stand very well as it's own thing and experience when put right next to the other sandbox games out there.

Easy games are a dime a dozen nowadays, so it's pretty refreshing to have a game that sets out to kick your ass as much as starbound does. But it's not even really that difficult. I think it is just everyone still getting used to the gameplay. Lots of the things people are complaining about are easy to overcome once you get further in the game and get used to things, IMO. But I think that people who complain about the difficulty are just "louder" then other people. Looking at the poll in the thread I created, a majority of people like how difficult the game is.

i have read a lot of posts on this topic and i understand most of those points and opinions
i just can say its really really anoying, i get killed like every 2 sceens, no matter what

i tried a lot of things (changing world, getting equip, etc.) but nothing seems to work
my main problem is that i cant figure ot how to build better armor/weapons an thus i am doomed to die over and over again

    :(

that craftable spear made me god of any planet lvl 3 or below, try crafting that, also I found that the body slam mobs it was better to be aggressive and run up on them with it and then give them the joey greco treatment the spear is still my go to on lvl 9 planets

Yeah, that's true. You do hear a lot more of the "Its to hard" cause the rest of us are trying to figure out how to make our life easier in the game :p but, seriously though only coming out at night or staying down in my mine until morning has helped quite a bit.

Angelus did you follow the quest lines to make crafting table? And the furnace, and later on make an anvil on your own?

Have you collected ores to smelt in the furnace? Iron, copper, silver, gold (and more)? If so have you looked to see what you can make out of those things at the anvil?

    That sorta stuff helps.

All of the above and also read every advice found here in the forums
i dont know, maybe its me but i hate the way meele works
the enemys are all incedibly fast

when i go into a glitch castle (i managed to clear one) it takes something like 30 death to get rid of all those well armed mobs that dont seem to drop any good weapons
how do i get a gun or something?

Game difficulty is really GOOD! And I agree that it should stay as it is. That's just beta and folks don't really know what to do, so I think that's the problem of all those ppl complaining about game being "too hard". If you want a good game, don't expect that every thing is going to be like in all other games you've played - learn to play, explore planets, combine materials!

My major issue is that mining anything takes forever. Difficulty... I'm fine with it. Everything got a lot easier once I raided a glitch castle and got a shied from one of the nice chests, along with a good one handed sword that I crafted. Even before then you just had to be careful and kite all the hard things with a bow. I died my fair share getting started, it was kind of expected.

    Short version: No.

Long version: I'm seeing a lot of threads on the forum that discuss the game's difficulty, scaling, etc. After playing for a few hours and experiencing the starter planet for myself, I've made my own opinions of the game's difficulty at the time of this writing.

COMBAT: The game's starting combat difficulty is fine. Yes, I do mean starter planet mobs. From what I had read before playing, I went into the game expecting to be completely destroyed. That turned out to not be the case. The starter sword grants more than enough knockback to keep melee mobs at bay indefinitely. Once I got the bow, taking careful aim and kiting served me very well. Timing jumps and ducking to avoid the mob leaps kept me alive and reduced the number of deaths I experienced significantly.

I can safely say that every death I've had in the game thus far has been 100% avoidable and due to my own error.

RESOURCE HARVESTING: Early resource acquisition does feel a bit too tedious, especially with the Matter Manipulator. I believe that adjusting the time it takes to mine through materials like cobblestone could be reduced slightly in order to make the game a bit less time-consuming. I'm perfectly fine with ores being hard to mine by early tools, however.

TUTORIAL: The tutorial is a step in the right direction but it is equal parts misleading and vague, making a player potentially new to Terraria-style games completely clueless to the core mechanics of the game. I think the tutorial should at least mention temperature; perhaps as a quest introducing the campfire.

OVERALL: The game is suitably challenging at early levels without being impossible and it rewards clever thinking, positioning and mobility over face-tanking like in Terraria. While the tutorial could be improved and fleshed out a bit to better introduce the game's core mechanics for players unfamiliar with the game, it's a good start. Mundane resource harvesting (cobblestone, wood, etc.) is more tedious than it needs to be and harvest time with the Matter Manipulator could be improved a bit to make the early game more productive for time spent.

I'm impressed with the game's depth and hope that the difficulty will continue to provide a meaningful challenge as I progress through the game's tiered planets.

Heres what people forget. You aren't supposed to do the boss right as you get the chance. You are supposed to collect coal so you can travel to other planets in the planetary system

Personally, I think it's like Terraria. You gotta sink a few hours into it before you know what you're doing, and get good enough gear. The start is very much trial and error. And a bit of a grind.

Heres how you travel to a bunch of planets at once. Get enough fuel to get to a forest planet. Chop down every tree in sight. Use the wood to fuel your expedition! Its not quite as strong a fuel source but its much more plentiful and easy to gather (and will probably get nerfed if/when they make trees renewable)

People saying the difficulty isn't an issue haven't played past the first boss. The first boss is easy.

The second boss can kill you in 2 hits.

The third boss will kill you in 1 hit, you cannot melee it, it takes 1 damage from all weapons and it can fly and hit you through walls.

I agree that the game could use more in depth tutorials. Also, the game's difficulty is going to largely depend on the type of planet you start on. I had a character start on a colder planet where apparently everything evolved their own way of staying warm... they generate fire. Every enemy I ran into had flame breath as a default skill which made trying to kill them with a sword suicidal. The bow is tough to get the hang of if you've played as much Terraria as I have, and many enemies hit like mack trucks in the beginning before you get armor.

I was able to do pretty well with my first character without leaving the planet (I had no idea that you could use coal as fuel for the shuttle). But the learning curve is pretty steep. I died at least 20 times with that character in the 7 hours I played her. I'm a lot wiser now, but the game is still rough in the beginning, especially if you get a planet that's rough to play on.
