    Well,I say yes!
There's no doubt, almost every game gets pirated.
I would like to hear what the devs think. :)

It wont kill the gaming industry. It just mean that only the ston ones will survive...
And this game is a stong one, so no need to worry

People will pirate stuff just because they are thieves and cheap bastards. I mean, come on.. people pirate $0.99 smartphone apps for cripes sakes. The excuse of "it costs too much" is utter BS.

Kidding aside, you really shouldn't be worried about Starbound being pirated. Pirating has been a thing since the Internet was conceived, and as long as people want things for free, it'll never stop.
Terraria has been pirated. Minecraft has been pirated. Sid Meier's Pirates has been pirated. Every effort to stamp out pirating completely has only ever been a nuisance to those who don't pirate. Starbound is going to be pirated, and there's nothing you can do about it. But it doesn't affect you, and there are more people willing to pay for Starbound that will keep Chucklefish chuckling its way to the bank for generations to come.
Besides, all pirating has really done to change the world is create the iTunes store, and tick off Lars Ulrich.

I've known pirates that will, well, pirate something if they are skeptical, and then if they like it, they'll buy it. Almost like taking a demo, and then will support the creators by purchasing the software/media.

But no doubt that it will be pirated. Fingers crossed that the majority of the community are good samaritans, and wont upload the game for others to pirate. Seems like, even with the 2 Million Dollars worth of pre-orders, StarBound has stayed somewhat under the radar. I don't see it mentioned too often on gaming/media sites, so even if someone does upload it, hopefully too many people won't download it.

    Wishful thinking, I suppose.

This game will definitely be pirated, the bigger question is will piracy hurt this game?

I don't think so. $2mil in pre-orders is an amazing result already I'm sure the team will take that money, and money made from future sales of this game to make a great second game whether that be a sequel to Starbound or something completely different, I'll probably buy it when it comes round.

People are so afraid of pirating and sharing. Look how the movie industry has freaked out, and they are making record profits. I will admit I have shared games in the distant past, (when you could get clean copies) and many times it was still not worth it. Back then developers would release demos to see if you would like the game anyways, eliminating a bigger need for pirating. Just because you can get something for free doesn't mean you get a good version which has all features and is free of spyware and maleware. Pirates will always exist just like cheaters. It is better to strengthen your game for those who pay, than spend tons of effort fighting pirates. It is a losing battle that just hurts your good market share instead of actually taking down pirates. Just look at the rocky history of DRM or other always online failures.

It hasn't yet, and it's been around much longer than some of PC's concerned gamers.

Those of you saying "if it exists it will be pirated" I would like to point you to games like D3 that, while criticized for DRM, have never been fully emulated or successfully pirated.

Pirates will never leave, and never stop. Some have legit reasons, others don't, and some just use legit reasons that don't apply to them. Either way, it wont have any effect on the game itself or the industry.

    True.

Pirating game will always existe. You can either accepte it and work with it, or use some dumb ass DRM that pirate will easily bypass, and piss off your legit customers. Like Upass.

Hot Line Miami dev even patched a broken pirated released. He didnt want the game to have a broken reputation

I'll have to pirate it (sadly) because I don't have a credit card, or bank account, nor does my single father, who doesn't work. Other than that I'll either enter competitions or wait for someone with a heart of gold :D

Pirating has existed since the invention of the printing press, and probably before it. That said, this game will, without any doubt, be pirated. And the manner of it's open, highly moddable format will likely make it easier. That said, I doubt it will hurt them too much. Pirates are people who find joy in stealing (but not with the risk), or they're people who will later buy or somehow support the game, or play it for a day and forget it.
