Is planet makeup related to its star and distance from it?

Is the makeup of any given planet related to the star it's around and its distance from it?

There's a big universe to explore, so I'm hoping to improve my chances of finding planets that I want by learning about the procedural generation algorithm. For instance, if I'm looking for other intelligent races, should I narrow my search to yellow stars and planets which orbit in an Earth-relative distance? And should I expect that there won't be much life around massive red stars, or planets close to stars? And might the abundant minerals on a planet be affected by star/distance?

If makeup is related to star and orbital distance, has anyone compiled a list of characteristics which match star/distance? Thanks!

I believe at this state of development none of that matters. Every planet I've visited has had intelligent races (dungeon, village, etc.) and they've all been packed full of minerals.

No I am pretty sure it's not. You come across arctic planets orbiting close to a huge star and jungles very far away from it.

If you think about it designing solar systems in the game like this would be difficult. You would have to take into account what kind of star it is (yellow dwarf, red giant, etc) and then you would have size of planet, it's mass and countless other details. The basic thing would just have the arctic planets further away than the magma or forest planets.

Goodness me that would be sweet - But no. Unfortunately not atm.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I'm really new to the game so I'm just trying to streamline.

It seems reasonably possible to add this feature into the procedural generation system. Star size, orbital distance and maybe planet size could affect the planets composition. I mention this because Starbound reminds me of my favorite game of all time: Star Control 2. It featured a vast galaxy, where all planets were reasonably affected by the stars they were around. Knowing this, you didn't waste fuel flying to massive stars because its planets would be too hot to land on to harvest resources.

Star Control 2. Best. Game. Ever.
