   normally, turning on a switch will turn on the light
   
   can it be wire so turning on the switch will turn off the light?

   Wire the switch to a NOT gate first. Then wire the NOT gate to the object you want to operate.
   
   NOT gates invert the signal on a circuit. ON becomes OFF and vice versa.
