Thing is, that's how it's always worked. Look at the EULA for a physical install of Baldur's Gate 1, which came out in the 90s. You're licensing the game, not purchasing it.

If you "Permanently" rent the game, are able to play it at any time (As long as it's not a multiplayer-only game), and are allowed to modify it, how is "Licensing" different than "Purchasing"?

...That's my point. I love Steam. And I don't care about the politics of the "permanent rental" issue a lot of people seem to have.

I can understand DRM when it gets in your way (Spore's DRM is really what made the issue obvious to everyone), but when it actually helps you by getting you cheap games exceedingly quickly, promotes indie games, and helps as a social network in its own right, it's not DRM, it's just a good system.

As was mentioned, it is how it always worked. Because you effectively purchase a license to play the game, as opposed to purchasing the game itself and thus legally owning the source code to do whatever you want. Anyway, the important thing is this is a legal distinction that means nothing in the real world.

 

Really? I thought they said it comes out at 10AM PST which would be 12PM EST

Edit: I looked at the wrong timezone. It would be 1PM for me.
