It's not like it really matters that the universe isn't custom to each player. It's so huge that unless you try you won't be finding the same places other players are.

The universe is not pre-generated per se. Even if you did have the choice to generate a new universe from scratch with every solar system in different coordinates, there's no real discernible difference on the user end: There is still a galaxy to explore. The engine that generates these things is what determines the outcome either way. The planets are generated on the fly based on seeds just like blocks in minecraft within the same world seed, but with billions of solar systems to choose from. It would be by far worse if each time you entered the same coordinates, you'd get a new and random outcome; it would totally destroy the idea of sharing the galaxy with your friends if coordinates didn't give consistent results.

I would be really interested in hearing what this "something different" would be?

I have to be honest, the random generation feels rather void to me, since the monsters abilities are fairly limited right now.
They often have identical fighting styles and the planets all feel rather similar, besides surface area there really isn't a different feel to most of them besides color palettes.

That said, i still adore the game and It's attempt at randomness, it can only get better throughout beta and release :)

You do realize that there are more planets in SB than the number of people on earth, right?

Although, I can understand why you would be upset.

More SB planets than people, but you can only adopt kids, can't have any of your own :D

You realize that "random" generation always needs some sort of seed right?

Personally I don't mind how they did it because it's exactly how they said they were going to do it. They said that all planets would be procedurally generated but they would be the same places in the universe. So, if you or your friend found a neat planet you would be able to share it with each other.

They said that everybody would have the same universe from the beginning. They said we could share coords with our friends. That's obviously saying that we weren't going to have different universes.

The way I think of it is that we sort of do have our own universes. Sure, we can all go to the planet at X-####, Y-####, but we can customize that planet different. I can turn it into a huge metropolis, while someone else might deforest the entire thing and strip it of all but the deepest ores. Then, because servers draw on the single-player files, depending on who hosts the server, the universe can change. If I host the server my friends will see what I have done. If they host it, it will be completely different. I like that it works that way.

I am a bit disappointed with the aliens though. I hope that it is revisited and fleshed out more, but for this point in the game it works well enough. It would be great if there were a simple way to perhaps mod in some of our own creations, placing them in specific biomes or something. That could be quite fun!

A great deal of content is still missing-for instance, you can't sell to any of the merchants. I would assume that perhaps guns will be more easily accessible later on, since it all boils down to finding a gun merchant right now. I have yet to find a gun, but I've been able to beat the robot with just the steel bow and a random level 17 spear, so it isn't like the guns are required. They are cool though, so I'd like to have an easier time of finding them. Perhaps ensuring that any settlement with a weapon vendor (which appear to be quite common) also has a gun vendor, instead of four clothing vendors selling the same items as each other?

What Kaze and Lazer said above is the understanding of 90% of the people, including myself. So by now you should have adjusted your expectations and be less disappointed. There's always servers and terraforming your home planet to fit your fancy.

EDIT: and stop saying coordinate-sharing will not work. It does. Period.

So... you want your own universe? Well... here's an idea if your starting position wasn't good enough: Go to your ship's navigation, click "Random Location" and go there. Even if you're on a server, chances are practically 0% that anyone will find you, or even know of your disappearance.

Fact is, although the entire universe will be procedurally generated the same for everyone, I'm willing to bet that our entire community has explored less than 0.5% of it. Go find your spot in the universe and be happy that odds are in your favor that no one will ever know about it.

As for monsters... I've seen palette swaps for some guys, but I think I've seen enough creatures to know how the system works and I'd say it's a good system, and easily expandable to exponentially increase the number of creatures it can generate. I'd say be happy with the content we have so far, it's simply amazing what's in game already and it will likely explode to far more in upcoming patches/updates.

As for the guy who wanted to see some creatures that were different sizes. You probably haven't found a "miniboss" creature yet. I'd say they're roughly twice the size of a normal creature and more powerful than you'd find on that world. They also drop goodies :D

As far as guns are concerned... don't feel too bad about it. Any gun you find is going to be roughly the same level as the world you found it on, so any higher level worlds, it's going to be a crappy weapon, just like your sword. Sure, it's ranged, but most guns either fire very slowly (snipers) or have very low damage output (assault rifles). I found an awesome flamethrower on a TL30 world, and it just decimated everything I came across, until I hit X sector, where I have to cook guys for a while before they die. And while it does burn creatures to do consistent damage regardless of level difference, it's not long range, it's mid-range, and knockback goes out the window when you get to a certain level gap.

welly my op is no were near cancer I am not trying to start a fan war I am not even trying to convince people. If I wanted to start something I would not have done it about something else.
I have not once said that my way is better; the only time I have gotten upset in this thread is when people have been insulting me or my intelligence. This thread is about me finding if other people feel the same way I do not to have people like you insult me.

    PS were is my threat?

The game is very young by the time final release comes (which is not for a long time) the game will have changed a lot, don't be so quick to judge the game in it's first week of beta.

Linukboy, I'd be interested to see a quote of what the devs said that gave you the impression the game would be something different. You've said that we were promised something different, and if you can show me where I think I'll hop on board with that.

My problem is that most of what you're saying seems to be a simple case of hindsight bias; you started building up expectations as time went on and we got closer to Beta, then when Beta launched you transplanted your expectations backwards in time and assumed something that was never really said.

Again, I'd like to see a link to the post where they said what you were expecting would be the case. You might be surprised to find it doesn't exist. On the other hand, I might be surprised to find it does. How about putting it all to rest and supplying a link?

Another concern I just realized is that on Minecraft you're born on whatever world you seed.. Just because a buddy says "Go check out so-and-so planet!" doesn't mean I'm going to have megatons of coal in order to actually arrive there :wut: At least at this point I'm assuming they don't give you some kind of warp technology later in the game that undermines having to use fuel for travel.. Basically all these planets that are as far away as they possibly can be will always be as far away as they possibly can be, and will have some kind of cost to actually visit them.. Wonder how much fuel it'd take to travel from the farthest star in the southeast corner to the opposite star in the northwest corner :O

Again, my overall knowledge of the (late) game is pretty thin :> Either way, I wouldn't say the OP is a troll, or cancer (which is semi-trollish in itself :( ), or whatever. He's being pretty respectful, as people go, and this is an aspect of the game I've been wanting to discuss and learn more about anyway :p

Nonetheless, the amount of planets and moons in Starbound exceed the number of planets people will have discovered in Starbound as long as you will play it. I mean it, there's like infinite number of planets, so you can ALWAYS find a new one which noone has ever seen before.
