To start off, I know some of these ideas were already looked over by Chucklefish, but I just wanted to put my views on the table, to see if anyone else may find it interesting. Alright, here we go!

    Space Battles
As an appetizer, I'll point this out first. I know everybody has been thinking of this, after all it is a space game and as soon as the word was out people most likely were geeking out about being able to blow up other peoples ship. The base of it is that players may partake in epic sub-gravity action! Like randomly (though very rarely) your ship would be attacked suddenly by some form of enemy, maybe the Tentacles, Pirates, or other npc's that are already implemented, or even something like rival factions or races, like per say an Avian player would be attacked by the Zealots of Kluex, and a Hylotl ship assaulted by Florans. Each ship would then have like an Anti-Spacecraft turret or sub-fighter (both upgradable) to defend the ship. You may have to destroy all ships if they are too proud to surrender. However, if you lose, then your ship will go down and you will die, respawning on the planet and being forced to search for the wreckage and repair it (after locating any dislodged parts that is, courtesy for Zegz for the idea). To repair, all you'd need to do is reattach the dislodged parts like the engine, hyperspace-drive, rebirthing unit, onboard storage and consoles, control panel, and teleporter using the matter manipulator. There is a chance, though, that if you are still alive when your ship goes down that you will survive the crash and won't exactly have to go searching for the hull itself. There is also the option to build an escape pod, which takes up 1 of 3 slots in the ships console and when activated (by pressing the panel on the wall) will launch you to a position near the crash site, with some flares and bandages for survivors.
When your ship is attacked while on a planet, you would get a red alert warning similar to hunger. Then you would perhaps have the option to go up and defend the ship, command ground-based orbital defense artillery which can be easily built by tier 5 players, or just plain bail and search for the wreckage later...though you might want to grab your stuff from the locker first!
And just think of the PvP!

    Interplanetary Artillery
This idea is a little rough, but like two planets (probably during multiplayer) would be at arms with each other, and you would need to build a large cannons to launch interstellar assaults on enemies. The blasts would have a very little chance of actually killing individuals, but would definitely overturn the landscape and hopefully take some opponents with it, like meteors. Different types of cannons would have different results (A single laser to sweep a larger area of the planet surface but only burn away little more than grass, a large explosive shell that makes a massive crater for max damage but very low accuracy, and a kind of flak cannon to launch little bullet-like explosives). But you'd need to watch out from theirs, because I don't think you'd survive a shot from one of those without end-game armor. The rest ties in with the idea below.

    Crew-Members
Another feature (again, courtesy for Zegz) would be the option to (if you want) hire a crew to operate defense systems on your ship! You would need to speak with every and any NPC's you find, and if they say "Looking for a partner?" "Need a hand?" "I see you are a ship captain...need any crew members?" and other obvious signs of willingness to join, you can click the 'yes' option in the screen, and for the price of a few hundred pixels upfront, plus about 10 pixels each day\interstellar flight per crew member they will serve you loyally by attacking intruders, defending the ship, and repairing damage (if they survive the crash that is), and some may even follow you around on the planet surface for double pay! Alternatively you can place a 'Ship Crew Member Spawner' inside, which costs more initially but will save the time looking for willing NPC's.

Finally, the one we've been waiting for...
    Invasions!
I'm sure they are already going to add this, but it would definitely work out with the two options above. Know that before things get too rough, you would always have the option to build a deep-space radar scanner, to alert you three planetary days before an invasion is to arrive.
Large ships would suddenly appear in space, hopefully not too close to your own, and begin barraging the planet with space-to-ground gunfire (refer to idea #2). Then, they would release dropships (Maybe like a mobile mass teleporting device?) which would spawn maybe 9 to 12 troopers on the ground before moving along and spawning more about a mile away. Fighters would zoom through the sky in place of birds while troops and tanks scour the land below. If you really do not care about the planet you are on, you can just leave, but if it's your home world that's at stake then you have a couple of options, including but not limited to; Fighting back, destroying enough ships or killing enough soldiers to make them surrender (not likely); rounding up the natives and forming a resistance, or ordering your crew to intervene, then repeating step 1; building anti-spacecraft\anti-air artillery to take down the flagships (which would automatically win the battle) or taking them on with your own ship (not advised but it's still an option); building fighters to control the air; bail and hope they don't mess up your home world too bad! If the Invaders are friendly to you but not the planet you might be able to defect to their side and help clean the surface.
And because this idea REALLY makes me feel creative, I am going to list a bunch of spawns that will probably occur during an invasion. Only Glitch, Human, Avian, and Apex can command Invasions, as can tentacles and penguins.

Rover Drone - Little bots with machine guns, destroy the Comm-Node to stop them from spawning. Very weak.

Hummingbird Drone - Little bots with machine guns, that can also fly.

Heavy Drone - Sea Heavy Trooper. It's the drone version of that.

Foot Soldiers - Melee based grunts, easy to kill but pack a punch when grouped together. The weakest type.

Marine or Trooper - The base soldier, even more common than Foot Soldiers, they wield guns and possibly carry grenades.

Commander - Whether on foot or on hover bike\Mono bike (A special bike for Glitch or Novakid that has only one wheel), commanders are powerful leaders of a regiment that carry minor weapons. Kill him and they will stop spawning in your area for the time being. They are weak but have personal shielding!

Heavy Trooper - Really powerful, heavily armored soldier that sports a chain gun or rocket launcher. Rare but travel in groups of three.

Comm-Node - Destroy this to destroy all drones in the region and stop them from spawning. They don't respawn easy.

Tanks and Mechs - You get the idea, large super powerful ground vehicles

Rover - Like a bike, but it can carry a crew of 5; one driver, one on the machine gun in the back, and 3 passengers.

Fighter - Arial vehicles that tend to ignore ground based targets but bully anything that flies high enough.

Bomber - Large fighters with no guns, but that drop bombs. Rare, though they can still be very pesky as they can destroy scenery!

Gunship - The opposite of a fighter, they ignore Aircraft and lay waste to the ground.

Dropship - Non-Combat ships that continually spawn Troopers and Foot Soldiers, so long as there is a Commander near by.

Flagships - Large spacecraft, similar to the players ship, with turrets and anti-ground weapons. Usually at least 2 but no more than 7. Destroy all of them and the Invaders automatically surrender. Victory!

Probe - A type of rare drone that sucks up pixels and ores! Get rid of them fast!

Turrets - Stationary guns, they come in small, medium, heavy (rare), Anti-air, and Anti-spaceship (rare). There is also an autogun which is pretty much a drone version, for the more advanced races.

Templar\Knight - A special heavy foot soldier for Avians and Glitches, they have a red cape and a powerful sword. Might also travel in large roving hordes.

All spawns will drop pixels, the amount depending on unit rarity, as compensation shall we say for your losses and as reward for trying (should you not succeed). As if the continuity of your home world wasn't enough, just think of how rich you will be when the killing stops!
Finally, as a bonus, players would have the ability to command their own invasion! If you have enough pixels (enough to buy an army of soldiers and a big enough fleet, plus the added fees (all of which can be done with the money earned from defending against an invasion)) then you can conquer any world in the universe, so long as you can crush all resisters and provided you can survive it yourself. The rewards? Enslavement of the planet, with you as the new tyrannical dictator! The ores and pixels will flow in like theres no tomorrow, and you will have a free army of slaves to add to the next Invasion! And yes, you can build a galaxy wide empire.

If you like Invading other planets, defending from an enemy invasion, plus the many different benefits of this idea, then flag this thread so that Chucklefish will add these ideas! Then, if you could comment more ideas, that would be really awesome. Like they say, an expansive thread gets the gold.

I suppose this isnt a bad idea, apart from the bit about having your ship destroyed you should just crash on a temporary planet and make your way to your ship and find its engine or simply just go back to the planet you just tried to leave, also you should have crew that is recruit-able by pressing e on a NPC that is somehow indicated that they are willing to join, then you may change there name, wepon class then they can help fight in space or beam to a planet when they wish to, if they die they could either respawn or have another randomly generated look or for higher difficulty characters lose them completely .

Excellent Ideas. This totally would enhance the idea!

True but both our Ideas would take a while to implement...

I wouldn't vouch for interplanetary artillery, but the other ideas, they would massively improve the game in my opinion

Unfortunately, the bots are too stupid and not adapted to invasion.

But the idea of bombing makes sense.

I don't think I'd call sb a space game, since the only real interaction we have with it is while traveling from one planet to another. Or hanging out in our ships without travel. I dunno. Also, these ideas sound neat but also they sound like they'd be incredibly complex to code for. If CFG can find/justify the time, I'm down to play it... But I think I'd rather they spend their finite resources (CFG is a 12 person team. That's everyone. Artists, programmers, business and marketing, office staff, etc.) elsewhere.. At least atm.
