I wouldn't single out Star Trek, as many sci-fi and fantasy delve into inter-species reproduction.
However! There is an all-encompassing solution in certain mediums: All sentient lifeforms able to interbreed were created by an advanced, ancient space faring race. :catface2:
Of course, that takes bending the rules, modifying the lore, and enraging legions of diehard fans on most occasions. And it's kind of uninspired.. But hey, who says video games, movies, or television series have to be in a self-contained universe that makes absolute and total sense when making critical observations? :giggle:

Often with no clue as to why it would be impossible.

Let's look at Earth's existing hybrids for an example. Mules are the offspring of horses and donkeys, which are genetically, extremely similar. They are, however, sterile - their parent species, while close enough to one another to successfully combine DNA, cannot produce an offspring whose DNA can combine with either of their parents, or other mules. Ligers are the offspring of lions and tigers. Both are genetically extremely similar, but once again, the offspring is sterile - the parent species are not close enough to produce fertile offspring.

What do both of these examples have in common? Extreme genetic similarity. We're talking genetic codes that are less than 2% different. Just to give you an idea, there's only 6% of genetic difference that separates humans from chimpanzees. Yet humans can't breed with chimpanzees - there's too much genetic difference.

The closest sapient species (the term race is technically incorrect, as we're talking about entire species here, not ethnicities or cultural groups within a species. In fact, the term species is incorrect given that we're including Glitch and Novakids, which aren't even biological life forms) to humans would be the Apex. And in fact, according to their lore, Apex were once very similar to humans, until undergoing the Vestigio-Evolutionary Process, which transformed them into the Apex. It is possible, though highly unlikely, that Humans and Apex could produce offspring. Such offspring would likely be genetically sterile, much like the mule child of a horse and a donkey.

There is absolutely no possible way, a human could breed with an Avian or Hylotl, the next two closest species to humanity. One is a bird, and the other is an amphibian (both different taxonomical classes). They're far, far too removed from humanity genetically to ever hope to breed.

Florans would be even worse. They're not even in the same kingdom, taxonomically speaking. Not only are we far too genetically removed (any breeding that occurs would have to occur in a test tube, combining raw genetic material), but our physical means of breeding would be far too different as well. Humans might be able to carry one Floran's pollen to another, but that's as close to physically involved with the Floran reproductive process as a human can physically get.

Glitch aren't even biological organisms. They don't have genetics to speak of. Technically, a human could possibly build a Glitch, if guided by another Glitch. A human that understands how to build Glitch could potentially build a Glitch solo with appropriate blueprints and materials. But a Glitch, regardless of its builder, would still be a Glitch. Glitch built by non-Glitch parents would not take on any physical traits from their parents. In fact, it could be debatable as to whether the product of such building would be a Glitch at all - it's all dependent on how Glitch define themselves. Considering their paranoia towards Glitch that don't behave according to Glitch norms, it could be that Glitch consider Glitch that aren't restricted by their cultural limitations to not be Glitch at all - instead, some horrifying result of Glitch reproduction gone wrong.

Novakids are even stranger - they're not even understandable as machine life. They are plasma-based entities, contained by powerful magnetic fields produced by the metallic brands that comprise their 'faces.' Their reproductive method is also impossible to mimic, unlike the Glitch - it requires to two existing Novakids to contact each other with enough pressure and temperature to cause their plasma mass to fuse into enough heavy metals to produce a new brand, and then for the mated pair to leave behind enough plasma along with that brand for a Protokid to form.

Suffice it to say, no successful interspecies, or even inter-lifeform-type breeding can occur here in Starbound. The various forms of sapient life aren't going to get it on without the consequences of potentially disastrous failure.

    You know what? You're right.
But you also know what? This is fiction.
You know what that means? You can walk on an alien planet without a breathing apparatus in Starbound.
Debating whether or not inter-species reproduction is or is not possible, in real life, is not the point of the thread.

It's weird to me that this comment got more likes than the OP... even though it's essentially giving that post a 'like' in the form of a reply.

I demand anyone who liked the second post in this thread go back and like the first post right now! For the sake of my sanity!

I have a theory on how a glitch could be born from just about any species:

Lets say papa glitch breeds with something mama, then sends nanobots to her "production facility". There the bots would use minerals from the food the mama eats, and build a baby-sized glitch/ glitch-hybrid/cyborg that with help of analyzing the mama's DNA, looks like the parent's.

LOL!! This thread is freaky, but I think I can see a Floran seducing someone and whoops, they are lunch. Moments later you see cute baby Florans hanging off of the branches of a huge plant. Mommy waits near by to pluck them when they are ready.. Florans are toxic and kissing one might put you in a coma with little shrooms growing off your lips :rofl:
I think Glitches might reproduce from spare parts. :giggle:

okay, but just think of the possibilities if you have flaming hair. you don't need a hat in winter, you don't need a microwave ( just put your food above your head) and you don't need to worry about combing/brushing it in the morning.
