I agree. However, when it comes to novels, namely fantasy, "race" is often used for different species of sentient creatures (elves, humans, orcs, goblins, gnomes, etc...). Semantics, ultimately.

As in taxonomy, race is a differential for humans, human being the species. Race is generally used to describe the different subsets of people based on genetics (phenotype). So in this fictitious setting we could probably assume that an alien species could more than likely be sub-divided in to races as well.

Well in terms of categorizing phenotype has a key role. Morphology plays a large part in how things are grouped together. Since phenotype is the outward appearance or physical representation of our genetics it lends more heavily to how a lot of organisms are grouped and named.

Now, with humans race is determined by many more factors. These factors include things like geography, religion, phenotype, culture, et cetra.
