The idea is sound and there seems to be a lot of interest.
I would love to join a mature server such as this but as I live
in Australia I would need to check the connection first.
Latency to other countries can sometimes be a little too
    high for me.

I don't suppose there is an IP address I could ping to test
latency in a similar location to where the server will be
    hosted?

Hi @Greymatter28! When apps open I'd be happy to send you a PM, and you are welcome to apply. The level of maturity I'm looking for doesn't exclude 'that's what she said' jokes, for example. It's more about being able to let things go that really are not a big deal, and therefore being able to get along with many different kinds of people. It's about not being confrontational, not demanding power/admin status/whatever, but being honest, while also respecting other people's boundaries and opinions. I'm going to do my best to make sure griefers don't get in, but if someone does get griefed, I don't want to hear whining for 10 minutes, nor raging, nor abusive language towards other players, even the one who griefed. I want players who won't turn to me for every little thing, but try to handle the problem the best way they can first! If the universe burns while I'm away, I want players to stand back and laugh while taking notes so we can all fix it later. And I don't want haters, of any kind, towards furries, muslims, gays, or anything. Opinions are to be expected and respected, but hateful slander is not allowed on the server.

It's hard to describe exactly the kind of people I'm looking for besides all that. I guess it's not just maturity, but a type of personal ability to chill. I want people who recognize that this is a game, a tool to have fun with. Those who don't get it should be given a chance to learn to ease up, and those who already know how, shouldn't take it too seriously. The game doesn't take itself seriously, so I hope Starbounders will also approach the game with a tongue in cheek attitude. :D

    Sorry for the rant. xD

I've never seen a pathfinder continent. Send me a link or something, I'd love to look around!

@Deepclaw, that was hardly a rant, everything you said there is completely justified and askable of a community depending on a server that you went to the trouble of acquiring.

I've got an idea for a possible server-wide event: a 1-on-1 gladiatorial mech combat tournament. The entrants pay a small fee, signify that thay agree to the ground rules, and are given a slot on the tournament ladder. Of course, two mechs enter, and one mech leaves.

Of course, we're going to need referees and security guards.

As far as rules go, I'm thinking:

    1. An entrant loses the round if they leave their mech by any means, including emergency ejection.
    2. An entrant loses the round if they are forced outside the arena.
    3. An entrant is disqualified if any of their shots hit the crowd (Note: Perhaps a bulletproof glass wall would be preferable to this rule)
    4. If any part of the arena deemed as "vital' is destroyed, combat will stop until it is repaired, penalty will be determined by referee based on the severity of the damage.
    5. Fights are one on one ONLY. If another mech or a dismounted person appear in the arena, the round will be cancelled and declared void. Both contestants will be disqualified. This is because it is entirely possible for someone to have a friend attack them during a match, in order to make it look like their opponent cheated and get them disqualified.
    6. Crowd members who interfere with matches and/or deface/destroy parts of the arena will be removed from the arena.
    7. Fights that break out in the crowd will be broken up by security, and all involved parties will be escorted from the arena.
    8. All mechs will be inspected before the tournament and before each round the mech is involved in. A mech that has parts considered by the tournament holder(s) to be illegal must have that part removed or replaced. If the illegal part is still installed when that entrant's next match arrives, they will be disqualified.
    9. There will be a 5-minute pause between rounds, and a 10-minute pause when a tier of the tournament ladder has been completed. Entrants may use this time and any matches they are not involved in to make repairs to their mech, restock ammo supplies, and perform other maintenance tasks.
    10. Any additional rules that the tournament holder(s) declare will be treated as valid.

Please let me know what you think. You never know, perhaps a certain spacefaring trader would be willing to help finance such a tournament...

@Vahi5 I think it's a neat idea, but the arena being destroyed should make the fights more interesting, especially around environmental hazards. So I think rule 4 could be revised.

Sounds like a fun idea. Though like Greymatter said, I think a destructable environment adds to the fun as long as it is repaired between rounds (Perhaps have a layer of lava or electric traps once enough rock is destroyed, just in case the combatants dodge each other too much, it'll make the round more tense)

Also, we could record it via FRAPS and post it onto the server's website when the tournament is completed (I have FRAPS and I'd be surprised if some other people who are interested didn't have it aswell!)

An application process? Really? I have a feeling this might be a server I'd get banned from for making dicks. This is probably a dick free server, I'm assuming.

What do you have against dicks?

Also, should this be under social? EDIT: Maybe not, but I definitely think we need a subforum designed specifically for servers. Where am I going to post my 18+ dick-building-enthusiasts only server? I'm getting real sick of this discrimination.

Sounds like a server I'd like playing on. I don't generally play online on any game but would still like to be able to play sometimes without having to worry about getting trolled half the time I try to play...

Well, that's kind've the thing I would expect to see from a stereotypical 14-year-old. Mature behavior does not equal mature content. Although if you really want to make a dick on your planet, well that's your business....

    Again with the dick-scrimination!

Also, I'm joking. Except about the subforum thing, that's a ROCK SOLID suggestion. HARD to imagine why we wouldn't ERECT a new subforum for new servers.

EDIT: I'm done with the dick jokes, no more SOFTball humor.

This is definitely something I'd be interested in. I'll be watching closely for when applications open!

If you need some help with server-side things don't hesitate to give me a bell. I run VPSes and I'm pretty experienced with debian server administration (and a few other distros, but let's face it, debian is king).

I'd be interested in helping build this. Of course we will need to see if they can have modifications though, the mechs that is.

Hi @Spitfire! Sounds good. You're on the list!

@Vahi5 - Your idea does sound awesome, and the rules seem like they could easily be adapted for PvP arenas and whatnot. Again, PvP rules and stuff can be discussed after we get familiar with how Starbound works, but I'm loving the ideas people have put out so far. I really love that the server isn't even open yet and the seedlings of an active and creative community are already sprouting.

And guys. GUYS. Beta seems ready to release sometime next week! I think I'll be opening applications soon!!! Would anyone be willing to help send out the app link? Probably only a couple volunteers. I'll write the message and send to the volunteers, and then we'll split the pages of this thread to go through and send the application link to everyone who has asked for it. Like you check pages 1-5, I do 6-10, and so on. I'm thinking Friday.

The server won't be opened until the game's server exe (or however it'll work) is stable, but getting the app out of the way means faster access when we're ready to go live! <-- Just repeating this in case any new interested members didn't read previous posts.

Oh gosh, I gotta do another once over to make sure the website is ready. D: I tried adding more example images and making it non-native English speaker friendly, but there's always something to fix with these things. Hope its bare bones look isn't too disappointing! *frets*

@WMoose, and @WyldeFyres, I'll send you Conversations on Friday with the invitation message and the thread pages we'll each scroll through. :3

I think two people will be enough volunteers, thank you so much! This thread has expanded quite a bit in the last few weeks, hasn't it? So excited!

Once we get the app link, if we have friends that we think would want to join the server could we send the link to them as well or would you prefer that the only people to submit apps be the ones who posted here?

    @Deepclaw
Sign me up for an application when you open them up, please. I'm pretty interested in the idea of a mature server, since on games like Minecraft I had to deal with far too many children (and childish adults) as an admin. A nice server to play on peacefully is right up my alley.

  18. Deepclaw

samboni, feel free to share the app link with your friends. :) The link will be to the website, where all rules and requirements will be outlined as clearly as I could make them, so all the info your friends will need about the server will be right there for them to peruse before they apply.

    @debugman18 - Sure thing!

I think that he's not limiting destructable blocks except for important areas, such as the walls (which might be hiding circuitry that opens and closes the gates which allow players in.)
Things like dirt, lava pits, HFS (Hidden Fun Stuff, for those of you not familiar with Dwarf Fortress), and whatnot should still be destroyable.
