Interest Check: 18+ Starbound Server (Plans)

Being that this is an interest check, I would like you to check my interest. You'll find it's quite attached to the internals of this idea, and one would even go as far as to say I am interested in this.

But of course, I'm sure one more "treasure hunter" couldn't hurt. A digital shadow walking the walls of whatever dungeons are found, home inside a rag-tag ship built from scap metal with very little need for atmosphere. Selling at cheap prices to resellers, or using them for personal gain.

Or perhaps treasure in another sense - ravaging civilization for it's own treasure and peddling it away. Goods left defiled by the Glitch known as Catalyst.

Applications will open when the Stage 1 Beta is released. It says so right in the first post.

I'm not sure if I should feel offended by this topic or not. I guess age has just become another one of those things that everyone can rampantly make broad assumptions and stereotypes about and then feel no shame when the deed is done. Nonetheless, I do see the point of the topic; Immature, young children + adults = not a good mixture. The idea is good, as stated, though it's somewhat irritating to everyone who's on that intermediate part of the staircase that comes between 'angsty teen' and 'adult' to see that everyone below the age of 18 is, apparently, incapable of handling themselves in a mature environment.
Edit - I get that younger players are allowed to make applications; I'm simply looking at the stereotypes involved.

You're not the first to address such things in this thread. The point of the age recommendation is more of a deterrant, so that those who are younger than 18 know they will be held to the standards of maturity befitting that of the stereotypical adult. Granted, there are many cases of immature adults as well, but the 18+ age recommendation acts to let them know that this is no gag as well, and they too will be held to a higher standard.

The simple facts are that there is a positive correlation between age and experience, and experience and maturity. Therefore if we advertise to those who have had more experience in life, we are more likely to find our target audience (ie mature people), but we're also well aware of the exceptions that do exist so they are free to apply as well, because they know who they are.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm speaking of the reasons for age requirements in general, not specifically why Deepclaw chose to set the 18+ recommendation.

 

Everything WyldeFyres said, especially that last bit, summarizes my point Also, I have defended my position time and again, including a few times in the original post. I did not create these server plans based on stereotypes. I've based it on my own experience and my preferences as an adult. Thank you so much for your concerns. Even though I won't be changing the 18+ rating/requirement, you and others who have expressed this concern have been heard!

I feel it's not just a matter of the OP slapping on an age requirement because he feels that people over the age of 18 are more mature, because we all know that's not the case. More of what is going on here (or so I think) is the legal binding of being able to use mature language without getting in trouble. For example, he let's someone in who is 16 and his or her parents walk into the room and finds that their child is hanging out with a bunch of adults who are using mature language or maybe even suggestive language. He now has to deal with an outraged parent and can potentially get into some trouble.

I know individuals under 18 who are more mature than some older folks but it's more along the lines of being able to have the freedom of roleplaying or saying what you want to without offending anyone. It's not quite the fact that he or she may not be mature enough but more along the lines of the fact they they are still a child dependent .

With that said, the OP has no intentions of offending anyone I am sure!

 

Well, a 16 year old should be able to make a judgement call on who and where is appropriate for them to spend their time, and a child who is younger should have parental supervision anyway, so it really isn't the server owner's job to make sure the people on the server have permission to be there.

 

This is true, but it sure saves me some awkward times when I call someone out for stealing or something and it turns out they're 10. It's like suddenly I'm some adult stranger scolding a child and that's just not my place. @_@
You're both right though - the 18+ is as much about content as it is about maturity vs. age.

 

I'm pretty sure that the OP is trying to protect the server with the restrictions, and not the sensitivities of a child who shouldn't be playing on the server in the first place.

I'm always an introvert when it comes to gaming, but I like to think that having such a kind, put-together community around would make playing Starbound much more fun, save invalidation and all.
