Thank you for your interest all! :)

@Vizendel - That's awesome to hear. I hope it does take off. Looks like it just might.

@Solokeh Krontos - I'll sure send you a PM, too. Thank you for your offer! I may take you up on it. :)

@WyldeFyres - Wow, I really like that idea! To make such a project more manageable than having everyone building at the same time, I might ask for some volunteers ahead of time to help build a trade post. Probably any players who intend to actually set up shop at a central location to come in a day or two early to test the server and build their shop. I'll come up with a simple sketch for a layout, but the actual build and layout would be up to players. The sketch would just be a guide.

@LadyCeruleanBlue - I agree. Because of my username I get confused with being male a lot, and people on MC and Terraria thought I was a dude no matter what my avatar looked like. Well, a few people are in for a surprise I guess. :) I'll send you a PM when the website and app are ready! :)

EDIT: I've heard some people on other threads and stuff say that making server threads is acting too soon. Maybe. I thought it would be best to survey if making my server was a good idea ahead of time, and really...it's almost the end of 2013. Beta really could come out very soon if there are no delays! So personally, I don't think it's too soon. 'Sides, I'm thinking it's a good idea to get through applications and stuff before I get too busy with the game to read them! xD

If I get accepted, and the lag is bearable, I could probably help with the initial construction stuff. I'm diagnosed with Aspergers though, so my building style tends to be blocky and symmetric however.
I'm pretty creative though, and I TRY to avoid making stuff look too... mathematical.

@Manderxan, Wyldefyres - Sure thing. :) I'll let ya know.

Website Update - I did some editing on the rules and content and stuff. Still need to work on what I want for the application and my checkbook isn't quite ready to pay for the website's advanced features, but I'll at least have the complete list of questions for the app this weekend. I figure if I open apps ahead of time, I'll get a good subcommunity going for when the beta finally hits us and everyone's left scrambling for a place to play!

Okay, since I only found out about this today, I have a few things to say/ask:

First of all, sign me up :D! I find the whole idea pleasing, and the way you spoke in the interview to Vector and in the OP is similar to how I thought the best way to play Starbound would be. It's such a huge game, dimension and diversity wise, that playing even with local friends would be wasteful. A decent sized, mature community sharing the same server would give the game the MMO feel and needed immersion it's begging for. Though filtering through all the applications will probably be overwhelming for you, if the server starts getting popular.

Will Ventrilo participation be mandatory? As a "Drifter" (love the name, by the way, fits perfectly) and someone to whom English isn't a native language, having to actually speak online would be... bothersome. Most wouldn't understand my thick accent. This doesn't mean I don't interact at all, and I can sneak in the voice chat from time to time when it's quieter there, but I'm a lot more fluent writing.
Actually, how regular do you want the server players to be? Being in the last stretches of university, my playtime is reduced to a random hour most days of the week and a portion of the weekend, and that's only because I carry my laptop wherever I go.

I don't know how mapping in this game will work, as in can we add information to our maps that can be shared. If there isn't, I could just submit it on the website. Even so, I'd volunteer as an explorer/trader for the community. That's what I was gonna do with my solo game anyway, so doing it mainly in the server would make a lot more sense. I don't know if anyone has already suggested this, but when the community started getting more advanced tier wise, and more populated, perhaps organizing treasure hunts would be a nice event: we could build small shrine-like structures where clues would be given and that had to be followed for a nice little prize in the end. Heck, I might even do it by myself randomly to incentive exploration...

I quite hope I can get in the server, even if only in later openings.

    @Jhango -

First, Exactly. :D I'm so happy you feel this way and I definitely look forward to seeing you on the server. I'm sure you won't have any trouble getting in. I can see this from the questions and concerns you've brought up.

Second, Voice participation will not be necessary. It is simply there if you want to use it. Personally, I avoid voice chat on servers myself because I'm kinda insecure about my voice and I also have way more to say in writing than with my mouth. IE I get tongue tied in conversation. Sometimes I converse well, but sometimes I stammer and it's embarrassing. But in order to run the server right I feel like I should make myself available to speak in person about topics that might be difficult to chat in-game about. People will be welcome to email me about these same topics as well, though, if they feel more comfortable with that. :) You will be welcome in voice chat whenever you like. It just makes communications easier for some people.

Third, you don't have to play a lot to be a regular. If you log in once a week for an hour but you do it every week, you're a regular! Regulars will be players who consistently play on the server, even when hundreds of servers will be available.

Fourth, I hadn't thought of mapping in-game. This is really interesting! I think we can share lore and stuff in our Logs, but of course how we can share, and how much, will have to be discovered when the game comes out. I want the Star Map to be a public list of hard-to-find stuff, like rare terrain or monsters, or attractions, like someone's handmade city or restaurant. However, we'll need explorers to put stuff on the map at all! So sure, you could be a Travelling Historian or something if you want! That'd be cool. I also want people to be able to join with their Leveled characters if they want, so I'm sure we'll get some players who are already rearing for logbook trading!

Fifth, A server treasure hunt would be awesome!!! Thank you for the suggestion. I definitely think that's a great idea!! I'm sure we'll have enough players to plan something. I hope to have enough players that one group will plan something for one weekend, and another group will plan something else for two weeks later. I think it'd be awesome to have a schedule of events for people to look forward to, and enough people to host them all!

I have two ideas myself for the opening of the server:
A.) get some volunteers who are interested in building their own shop to come in and help build a trade colony before the server's official opening. This will establish an early feel for who we're playing with, and provide players a common spot to make trades, sell items, and play music.
B.) Some time after the server opens, I'd like to host an event of some sort to celebrate the server's opening and the beta's release! I don't know what though. I would think an in-game party, but maybe a few activities and competitions to win prizes as well. I don't know! I'd like to know what other people would want to do.

Thank you so much for your interest and bringing your concerns to light. I hope I was able to answer them well for you!

On another note: I've decided that I won't open applications until the beta release date is given and we get some details. I don't want to pay a year's subscription fee on the website only to learn that the beta is pushed back or something tomorrow. x_x As soon as the release date is announced, I'm opening the website to anyone who wants to join so I can go through all the applications in preparation for the server's opening. I don't want to be going through apps when I could be playing! xD

EDIT: Oh, and I decided on the questions I wanted for the application. I can't plug them into the website's form submission system until I subscribe though. Soon though! Sooooooooooooon.

    UPDATE:

In light of Tiy's post today (click here to read it) I have a feeling that Stage 1 and 2 might be too unstable to effectively run a server. SO. While details on how server hosting is going to work are yet to be released, I think it's safe to say that this server probably won't open until Stage 3, after most of the bugs and stuff are weeded out of the game and people are less likely to lose their save games. And I'm less likely to have to restart the server over and over to install updates. >_> And server hosts have gotten their hands on the game so I can pick one!

Applications to my server will open after Stage 1 of the beta is released so that all players can choose their usernames and gotten familiar with the game! That should give me enough time to sift through all the apps ahead of time and witness how servers are going to work first hand.

In the meantime, anyone who has expressed interest in my server and thought to themselves, "Huh. I wonder if her server will only accept new characters or if I can import my Main character?" please note that characters of any level will be allowed to enter. So if you're playing on other servers or solo while you wait, don't worry - you won't have to start from scratch.

More details have been added to the FAQ at the end of the original post of this thread.

Heya, heard about this server concept today while reading the Vector Squared.
Although 17, I'm very interested in applying, as it sounds like it will be a really good place to play.

    'Ello.
In my early 20's myself, I do think this server sounds like a very interesting concept.

I really do like the fact that voice communication is possible but not mandatory, found it to be somewhat annoying to constantly have to use Vent or TS when I've played on similar servers in other games.

Will absolutely give this server a shot whenever I decide to try the multiplayer, my only concern is that my ping may be a bit buggered since I do not live in the US, but time will tell I suppose.

    Best of luck!

I think waiting for a stable version of the game is deffo the way to go, I think we would all be very frustrated if we had just created a spawn planet for everyone and then it got reset lol, nevertheless im still looking forward to this already growing community and i look forward to being creative with you all :)

EDIT : Assuming I am accepted after my application :p

I'd like to express my interest as well. I'm an old fogy by internet gamer standards (31 :p). I can put up with a lot of immaturity (I play League of Legends...) but it'll be nice to have a place to play where I don't need to.

Count me in! 28 here and want to focus around playing with mature folks. I currently play EQ2 and it seems I cannot run from the young ones! I think there is no need for debate here, everyone has their own play style and those people want the gaming experience they bargained for.

    One suggestion I'd offer:

Once Phase 1 comes out and you get a chance to start parsing through applications, I think it might be worth getting a voice server and/or other communication set up, even if the game server itself doesn't come until later. I can see people wanting to host transient servers during the first two phases to play together, even if there isn't a single central server to play with yet. In phase 1, in particular, I can see a lot of people messing around and not even trying to save progress, just starting up new fresh servers and getting established on different initial planets to check out the scenery and see how things go. It also gives people a chance to get to know each other, possibly leading to early plans for joint constructions once the shared server goes live.

At least personally, I'd prefer to start from scratch when starting in the 'real' server, so that I get to leave behind the imprint of my early adventures on the growing universe. I'll ideally go into it, though, knowing generally how I'd like to proceed and hopefully having met some people with whom I'd like to go through that initial growth period.

This actually made me think... Don't we all start out in the same "central" planet with each new character? Wouldn't that be considered the newbie zone?
And will there be a limit on the number of planets that we can inhabit and modify? After a while, with a large number of people constantly changing a ton of planets, the file size of the map will start getting huge, which could lead to problems even in the release version...

Hmm.... This is a really good idea. I'd get sick and tired of playing with kids who weren't willing to work together cooperatively. I'd been planning on playing single-player, but I might try this if it works.
I just have two questions: You said in page 1 that if we wanted to play by ourselves (for the most part), we'd be able to. I don't have a lot of experience interacting in MMOs, so I don't really know if I'd be an active part of any community you're planning - it could go either way. Would that be a problem?
Also, I didn't see any mention of how often I'd need to log in except within this last page (page 10). My schedule and what I do with my time shifts constantly, so I probably wouldn't be regularly or consistently logging in. Would that be a problem?

Also, just a personal question: Do you actually host those servers yourself? Doesn't that get a little expensive?
