Intense permanent fog, rain, sand storm, etc.

Intense permanent fog, rain storms, sand storms, falling ashes on certain planets could be a way of adding a "higher" difficulty to those higher tier planets. For example, the zombie genre inspired "Intense permanent fog" would make it difficult for you to see even a few pixels in front of you, giving you less time to react to monster attacks and even adding "fog peeks" making it completely IMPOSSIBLE to see for a certain amount of time.
This would definitely add a certain annoyance, that would cause people to want to avoid those planets, which would be great to added unique resources forcing those players to try over and over again to survive in such bizarre environments. Just a thought. :)

    *Edit*
Another idea i had was inspired by a mission in starcraft 2 heart of the swarm dlc in which you would need to collect and "consume" DNA of certain monsters to survive that planet's ice cold peeks.
Obviously, life on those higher tier planets would have adapted to survive on those planets. So my other idea was to in a way do the same thing as starcraft and implement a DNA collector to the game.
This DNA collector would be used to collect DNA from ONLY the ALPHA creature of a pack (Creature packs have already been add in game, if i'm not mistaken.) found on that planet, which you would then have to take that collected DNA up to your spaceship and implement it into a sort of oxygen tank.
These tanks would give certain survival "buffs" to your character to help survive environmental peeks and/or hazardous environmental toxins only when breathing in the DNA implemented oxygen. The DNA implemented oxygen would be usable via. oxygen mask (for longer adventures and/or collecting resources on ONLY that planet.) or oxygen dispersion generators (for buildings or even pre-generated dungeons.) People were mentioning something similar so i thought id share this idea. Just a 2nd thought. :)

I think this will be a good thing, because things like this brings depth into the game.

I know I've read that they will not have "fog of war", but instead being able to have a 50% transparent grey mist ontop of everything would be cool, same with sand and all that.

It will be harder, but not impossible to see ;D

Maybe these "Fog Pecks" can be avoided by wearing an environmental suit or mask of some sort..?

Good idea. But many players (like me) would just find it frustrating if the fog is excessive or impossible to get rid of. It would be satisfying to be able to clear some fog to see a cool planet underneath.

The fog might be generated by something environmental, like fog coconuts (renewable) or fog statues (nonrenewable). With the great fluid dynamics in the game, the fog could be implemented as a (viscous?) fluid with a halflife.

An extra appeal of this type of fluid is that it could have a lot of other applications, too: poison gas, regular lava drips that don't accumulate, etc.

I just want to say that I don't know enough about the game's implementation to say whether or not the fog fluid is a viable option.

This is a great idea! The fog could be some kind of foggy-storm which would change in fog thickness every now and then, sometimes making it almost impossible to see crap around you :p

harsh enviorenments just NEED to be in this game for higher tier planet to be more authentic and for lategame experience. more dangerous=more fun

Really like the idea of heavy fog. Would like to see that plus perma-blizzard and perma-rain worlds. I have a thing for stuff like that :>

I like this idea! Maybe the strorms are so violent that you can't make a base there and just go there for a while with the right gear.

I do like the permanent heavy rain/fog/snow/sandstorm idea. It'd make it all the better to come back to a warm dry (or cool) base. But there would need to be a way to repel fog in certain areas, just some place-able devices or something.. That way fog wouldn't be in your base, but would remain in caves, ect. Also.. storms just create a nice atmosphere.

Not a fan of the DNA bit though, but to each their own. :)

Also, if you built a building in the middle of some storm/foggy zombie apocalypse, you should be able to wall off a room (entirely) and wait so that whatever is clouding up the area just dissipates. You could also get a sort of air purifier to speed it up, maybe. And the DNA thing doesn't quite seem like my kinda thing, but a thought: maybe you could find loose DNA particles floating through the fog or storm? Like, some sort of lighter-than-air bacteria, maybe, or part of some creature's fur flying through the storm?

I would love this kind of planet, although I don't really like that DNA thing. There should just be items to survive certain extreme environments...

Had this same exact idea...but you beat me to it...a month before me :p

EDIT: Except maybe you could fan away the fog with...well...fans and maybe on some planets there would be temporary fog?

nice, it would be really interesting if you walked out of your home in starbound and you cant see an inch ahead of you! (makes it even spookier if there are some mobs!)

This sounds like a really good idea that can be greatly improved. Having environments that harm you is good for difficulty but the dna idea for every environment isnt really going to work for some people, like me. it would just get repetitive and boring. i mean all you have to do is go down find the alpha of a pack and harvest the dna, your done. it should change for the different environments, like for fog, a light source should decrease the opacity of the fog near you, and sandstorms you should have to find some insect-like monster with a hard shell, kill it, harvest the shells of a couple of the monsters and turn that into armor to protect you from the hard pelting sand. on the ice cold planets you should have to find animals with thick furry coats and kill them or find synthetic plants to make thick coats of fur or synthetic material to stay warm. anyone can survive a rain storm so instead it should be a hail storm. idk what you should do in a hail storm though:confused: . just saying though, this is my opinion.

I'm not sure about the DNA thing, but I do kinda like the idea of having certain planets with permanent (or at least very frequent) harmful weather effects, making it dangerous to go out in the open without equipment that protects against that weather type (and perhaps even some effects might not be possible to protect against).
Another similar idea would be planets with a constant background radiation, either causing you to build up radiation or draining health whenever you are you in the open - or even inside, if the building in question isn't radiation proof.
