Hey all, I'm loving the crew system, but am overall unsure of which all kinds of NPCs end up as which crew roles. So far, I gained two Avian Soldiers I always take as my away team (they're surprisingly tanky for redshirts), A janitor human that was an unarmed arctic trooper on an ice planet, and got lucky on obtaining a tailor crew member when doing lots of odd jobs for a grounded avian village. Yet I still wish to know who I need to be helping out to get crew roles that would be useful. Currently, I'm looking for a medic, an Engineer, and a Mechanic. I'm at a loss of how to obtain these roles, so I ended up simply rolling with the ppl that volunteered to staff my ship that I come across in towns and the such. (This has led to an interesting shenanigan, namely my two avian soldiers (who are male and female) might be romantically inclined to each other based on how many hearts I see from them when they do small talk) Anyone know of a solid guide that can assist with me figuring out who the heck I need to be doing quests for to get the crew roles I need? Edit: One of the Durasteel-clad guards I had on watch at my base ended up turning into an Engineer. I guess it's completely random which role they end up as? Edit Number Two: Yep, it's completely random who turns into what role. Two former guards ended up becoming a medic and a mechanic respectively... Now that I've answered my own question, might as well put this thread to rest.
You can kinda get what you want for a crew member from what I seen, but I think it is over all raindom since one of my armed guys asked to join my crew but was and engeneer
Yeah, I ended up making a bunch of Avian guard posts, some wanted to be mechanics, others turned into medics. Good thing they tell me to do rescue missions often for extra townies that don't even need colony deeds to hang out at your colony, since doing quests for them too (some also rescues for the rescued), I've ended up with more recruits than I ever wanted lol.
To be honest I hope they overhaul the Crew Recruitment mechanic sometime, because having it be totally random is not very ideal to be honest. There needs to be at least weights thrown in, like perhaps Apex are more likely to be Mechanics and Engineers, perhaps Floran are almost always Soldiers, maybe Hylotl are oftentimes Tailors and Medics, Avians are good at being Soldiers but can also be other things, etc.
That may may some ppl feel singled out, like if they want a Floran tailor or something like that. Besides, colonies build up TONS of potential recruits... Tho, my town has gotten so overcrowded with people I've rescued that the framerate starts to take a solid hit. Still, having about 10 recruits going around all armed with guns makes me realize that monsters are NOT gonna get very far into my town.
There actually is a weighting system in place. Certain types of NPCs have lists set to make them turn into specific categories. I don't have all of the specifics because there are simply too many NPCs to memorize, but I know that guards tend to turn into soldiers, mechanics, and engineers. They are about twice as likely to become a soldier as either of the other two. Certain types of villagers (scientists are probably one) prefer to turn into chemists, and are weighted to be about two times more likely to be green or yellow chemists as opposed to red ones. Beyond that any NPC can become any class of crew member by default. I'm unsure what the default weights for the entire class spread as a whole are.
