Info about the upcoming patch!

Bull. I've seen so many of these today, I had to speak up. Lefties can do WASD too. The ones who say/think they can't are untrained, not physically handicapped.
I'm a southpaw myself, but I do just fine, and so do the other lefties on my server (several). Been playing many, many WASD games for over thirty years now - no issues.

I'm not trying to come across as hostile here, or pick on you in particular, but how can you sit and complain that this program is unusable to lefties?
How can you sit and complain of missing features in a beta program AT ALL? And to think of yourself bird-flipped? Puh-leeez. By the devs bringing you all this, bird-flipped??
You don't speak to the Devs for me, or the rest of us "WASD-competent" lefties.

Sorry to pick on your lefty-can't-play post among the many, but the only bird the Devs have flipped you/us so far are the Avians.

 

Exactly. I'm a Lefty and have no problem playing Starbound.
Frankly, this whole "I can't play because i'm Left-handed" sounds like a poor excuse to me. It wouldn't take more then a few days to get along with the Starbound Controls.

 

You don't read very well. I hate to have to repeat myself for people who are too lazy to read things and comprehend them, and too quick to rush to flame them. Even when I had been apologizing and trying to state my case calmly and peacefully.

I already use OBS software. I am NOT using the games built in streaming option.

And I already have been using a program to change hotkeys, called Autohotkey, which I have talked at length about how crappy a program it is.

Also, you pull the "why don't you write a game" crap from complete ignorance of who I even am. I was one of the developers of the original zip for windows libraries from PKWare in the 90's, and have been a professional programmer most of my adult life. I wrote a fully functional word processor on 6502 processor (assembly language) before you probably even born.

I DO KNOW WTF I'M TALKING ABOUT.


First, the problem I was talking about with the mic is that this game randomly turns off my USB microphone for NO REASON. You can see more details about it at this thread:

I will be streaming or in a call with people, skype, teamspeak, whatever.. and suddenly people can't hear me. I can look to the OBS software and see that the mic is not transmitting. Nor is my mic transmitting in whatever program I am chatting in.

I have to disable and re-enable the mic to get it to work. This has been verified as a problem by many people in the tech support forum. It doesn't affect a lot of people. But it does affect some. Just look at that thread.

It's not the headset. I've used the same headset for videos and streaming for over a year. Dozens of games.

IT ONLY HAPPENS IN STARBOUND. NO OTHER GAME TURNS OFF MY MIC.

I did not say I was using the in game streaming. I suggested that it could be RELATED to the fact that the game has built in streaming features. So it's likely that the game does things to mess with mic settings. You know, to facilitate the BUILT IN STREAMING FEATURES. This is a reasonable conclusion.


Also, I spoke to why autohotkey is a crappy solution. It causes keys to stick. Keys miss. It's annoying as hell trying to run around and kill stuff when keys stick and you keep moving, or it opens menus you didn't mean, because the key MISSED the remap.

But even assuming you could get a perfect hotkey replacement solution, you would still have the problem where if you try to TYPE things in the game, such as searching for items on the crafting menu.. or typing a player name in to join the party. OR JUST USING THE IN GAME CHAT!!

it comes out as convoluted garbage because YOUR KEYBOARD IS REMAPPED TO OTHER KEYS. THE WRONG LETTERS COME OUT.

Try it sometime and see what a pain it is, to have to continually enable and disable the remapping.

AUTOHOTKEY IS A CRAPPY BANDAID SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM THAT HAS A TRIVIALLY EASY FIX.


You have no idea what I was talking about, and rushed to flame me without any understanding. I'm sick of people like you. It's precisely why I feel the need to be so long winded, to make it 100% clear what I'm saying. Though that does little good.

It's also why I rage and flame people here. Because there are so many opinionated (yet ignorant) people here. I tried to be nice, and apologize, and state my case more calmly. But no, idiots have to still flame me. Out of pure ignorance.


These are legitimate problems. Proper hotkey rebinding via config is trivially easy, and it's getting inexcusable that it does not exist, because of how easy it is.

People dismiss it because it doesn't affect them. But it's a legitimate complaint.


And seriously people, this is not about lefties not being able to play, or BS you guys resort to dismiss this issue. I'm not lefty. It has nothing to do with that. I simply am not used to WASD. I've used a different control scheme for 20 YEARS going back to DOOM. It's not that easy to unlearn that.

Stop making excuses. It's a common industry standard to have definable hotkeys, and it's inexcusably easy to put it in the game.

That is FAIR CRITICISM. IT IS A TRIVIALLY EASY THING TO ADD.

It's sickening to watch this place, so full of utter fanboys lacking any objectivity who just defend defend and flame anyone who has the audacity to question anything.

I don't know why I bother. I want to support this game and be someone who helps this game prosper and succeed. I am having legitimate issues that are worthy of discussion in a game which is in beta and the whole point of that is to find bugs and problems and fix them.

But I gotta continually deal with ignorant, arrogant idiots. I'm fed up with it.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I believe the people who are complaining about key configuration are primarily left-handed players who are struggling with these whacky right-handed keyboards.

Depends on what hand you use for the mouse. My wife plays, and she has a drawing tablet. It's painful watching her use her right hand on the tablet, and she can't really do it the other way around. Anyways, the work arounds that abound using autohotkey and such suggest that this is a user feature.

Allright, I think you already figured that out but the way you type, raging, insulting, won't make people respond in a more understanding way.

You say you have been a professional programmer for most of your life and I really think that this is your problem here. You are constantly repeating how easy the keybinding thing is to fix. The guy who is actually coding this game tells you it's not and you stick with it because you have a lot of experience in coding. I am pretty sure that you haven't been coding something like this and it may be a very different thing. Since you can't take a look into the source code, you don't know what is happening there. You have a clue but you can't know.

Another example: I work in engineering of simulation test beds what is, to make it easy, make a room very very cold or very very hot, moist, whatever. It's basicly climatizing a room. If someone tells me he is working on the climatization of a 20 storey building and the people at the top are freezing because the heat doesn't work, I would have an idea what the problem is but it is still a very different thing. There are a lot of factors involved, I don't have to deal with in my fields although it's a very similar thing. So I wouldn't tell this guy that this is easy to fix (not even if I think it is) because he maybe knows better. He (or she, sorry for that) might appreciate my input on this problem ( if it's well thought and not filled with rage and insults).

Just to say it's easy, even if you have experience with coding, is just arrogant (professional arrogance, one of the worst kinds in my opinion). I don't mean to offend you, I am just evaluating your postings so far.

So, maybe think a little bit about it. Maybe there is a possibility that this is as the main dev said and it is not easy because the other possibility is that they are just mean and I don't like to think that.

Conclusion is: You maybe don't know "WTF" you're talking about.

Not really , the first tune i choosed crashed my game and I have alot of different instruments.. any I try crash my game.

I like what you said, Whiplashr. It's very important that legitimate and fair suggestions/ error feedback is heard. I find it tedious that so many times I read stuff like "but you almost have the same functionality if you..." or "you shouldn't be angry about missing features".

It's the fate of a beta, though. Since the devs are busy making the game, it's wise not to invest too much time in communication about making the game. Therefore, nobody knows wether an oft repeated suggestion has been heard, people keep bringing it up, other people get annoyed by the whining... viscious circle.
