Well I just figure it was bound to happen. I'm definitely not encouraging. :(

Ehm ok? Why did you play so early then. Your own fault for ignoring "WIPES ARE TO BE EXPECTED"

Of course we were informed, but I didn't expect this many. I know a lot of folks that feel the same way. I believe its okay for me to voice my displeasure to the devs.

    See the above reply.

How is 2 wipes many? Do you know the reasoning for the wipes? And you say most wipes are last resorts, ehm no? I've been in many betas etc and I remember lots of times where they wiped for a new updated that included new content.

The fact that you're displeased about a wipe in a beta is a mystery to me since you can always just wait?

well said it was very clearly pointed out to anyone that bothered to read the front screen that this would happen and probably quite often . i am personally surprised i have not seen more wipes
as the saying goes "if you cant stand the heat..get out of the kitchen"

We were told to expect wipes. There have been wipes.

We're coming to our 3rd wipe. I know the reasoning for wipes very well. Wipes are usually necessary to fix an otherwise unplayable game, major bug(s), or a heavily unbalanced game. Those are usually the top criteria, with respect to wipes. I have over 65 hrs on this game and I've yet to see an unplayable game that would require a full wipe, any major bugs that would render the game unplayable or any elements that made the game heavily unbalanced(with the exception of some weapons and armor having higher stats than was intended, which was corrected)

Usually, in beta's, things are fixed on the fly with a torrent of patches. Which rarely resulted in a FULL character or world wipe The only wipes that I have experienced in, most beta's, is the one that everyone gets before the full game launches. Which of course is to be expected. You are correct, btw, I should and will wait till the final release. I just set my expectation to high. While I do recommend this game to most, I make sure to tell them to save there money till final release.

Thanks so much for fixing the hidden .DS_Store in OS X. So annoying deleting the player folder every time i wanna play :D

This is the kind of flaming I expected. Please refer to my response to SweFox, and all my responses to this subject. I expect a wipe-feast on alpha, but not on beta. There is a difference.

This is the exact thing to do, the only people who should buy it now are people who want to help the devs by bugtesting or just the early injection of money.
To start of I have played 230h of this game so far and I would have continued even with the wipes happening, I only paused now because they anounced there wouldn't be anymore wipes after this patch. In my opinion, they really shouldn't waste any time on temporary fixes, so people will enjoy the Beta more and concentrate on finishing the game the fastest and most efficient way possible. We could quite probably miss out on some content in the finished game that they can't implement for now finalized characters. Also the Betas I participated in so far had complete wipes almost every patch (with exceptions like Minecraft which is a fun but extremely broken piece of work)
and those games where mostly in way later stages of the Beta. I don't know what qualifies this game as being in beta, in my opinion we are still early in the cycle and people should stop complaining and only report on things.
Thank you Chucklefish for this so far amazing game and I can't wait for it to come out!

FrogRaven: You miss some of the reasons for character wipes... one huge one, for instance, is a change to the structure of the character/world data itself. They aren't wiping because of balance or anything like that. They left it up to the player in those instances, if they wanted to start a new guy or not. If you played when there was very overpowered weapons, they could have legitimately wiped then, but didn't.

My main point here... you don't seem to understand some of the other more technical reasons that makes a wipe necessary.

Okey so what about adding new content that requires you to make new char to be able to use? What about those situations? They can do wipes all they please and you shouldn't feel entitled to a wipe free beta, that is absolutely nonsense. You decided knowing a wipe will happen to spend 65 hours in a game that is stated as a beta, have a long way left before release. How can you come here and complain about wipes?

They have their reasoning for a wipe and that is enough, they don't need to explain why etc to you.

I happily did both. Money injection and feedback. Patches are not temporary fixes. Generally speaking, they address flaws that my have been missed(bug(s) and implement content/changes.

I disagree with your assessment of Minecraft. It evolves. The dev team comes up with new ideas, and they implement them. Also, factor in the large "modding" community. Put that into the mix and you have an environment with explosions of ideas going off, all the time. Its far from broken, my friend.

Can't wait! I don't mind the wipe, but it'll be nice to have some permanence from this point on. Now, what's the best way to end a character's life in style?

  18. frograven

    frograven Aquatic Astronaut

I do understand, and you make a great point. I do stand corrected. The patch that decreased the amount of worlds, and the balancing they did with the mobs and what not ... yes that wipe made sense. Thank you, for pointing that out. :) They basically started over, and changed the game mechanics(Exp. Armor pen vs DPS) So yes, I agree. A wipe was definitely justified. I'm just referring to subsequent wipes.

I don't mind working for all the stuff again. Will bring some new life into the game again for me but I agree that even in alpha stages when you release a game at this hype of level there are some things you should have stable. If your game is about building up a character and building stuff, then you might want to make that a priority before any type of launch.
