I wanna play the nightly build, but I have done a lot of work on my characters that I don't want to lose. If I play the nightly builds with a new character, will my other characters be touched? For example, if I play normally with character 1, and I play the nightly with character 2, will anything weird happen to character 1's clothes, armor, home etc.? It may seem like a dumb question, but I just want to make sure I don't lose my character on which I've logged 100+ hours Thanks for the help
Just do some backups from your character and universe to keep 'em saved!! Do this: Goto E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound Create a new folder, like BAK Backup E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\player -> your 100+ character hashes -> Backup E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\universe -> everything, if you like
Alright thanks for the help. I have one problem though. When I go to the player folder I just get a bunch of numbers, how do I know which one is which?
Also if something gets deleted do I just move the file from where I backed it up to where it got deleted from?
Opening some of the file will give you a text file with seemingly random letters and number and somewere near the start of the file, the name of the character. And yes, to restore a file, just copy your backup right back to where you took it from. On a side note, can you actually play both nightly and normal build without re-instaling the whole game each times?
The only foolproof method is to copy the entire game before subscribing to the nightly branch, at least in my experience.
It is easy to find out, what specific hash is your 100+ hours char. Open Starbound, login with your desired character (singleplayer), and exit starbound again. Within the E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\player directory, you will find 3 special files: * hash.METADATA * hash.PLAYER * hash.SHIPWORLD Please notice the date of these 3 files. For example, you logged in with your desired character and logged out @ 00:10am, these 3 files must be modified @ 00:10 as well. And there you go.
What I've done is to move the entire Starbound folder away from the Steam folder, uninstall via Steam, and download the nightly. This way it's sure nothing gets deleted. If you want to play the stable version again, you just have to manually start the game via the old Starbound folder. No reinstalls.
That's awesome, but how do you manually start the game from the old folder? EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out. Thanks for the help
Hmm so we get alot of items for free to start out, and you can craft things without having the stuff needed, i think im going to wait for another build
