I really like the game so far, but I feel like the procedural generation of animals and birds falls flat in some instances. I think this is most true for asteroids. When I first beamed down to an asteroid belt and saw all the scattered rocks and what not, I went 'this is so cool!' The effect was diminished, however, when I saw flapping creatures moving between them as well as ground-based creatures that ended up just falling into the big gaps.

I think asteroids would be a lot more fun if:

    1) There were unique creatures to space environments. Things that float instead of fly. Things that crawl along surfaces instead of 'falling' into the gaps between asteroids.

    2) Some kind of building improvement or system that tracks air generation and containment. I'd like to be able to build a space station from scratch in an asteroid belt, but the effect is lost if you have to wear a space suit for it. (It'd also make for a neat strategy in spaceship and space station dungeons to blow a hole in the outer wall and watch enemies in that room asphyxiate.)

    3) Zero gravity for characters and dropped items? Might be a bit tricky to handle. Craftable directional jetpacks that only work in space might be a way to handle player movement.

I particularly like your first and second points. The first time I went to an asteroid field I was running out of O2, but found a structure which I expected to contain oxygen and save me. Apparently this is not the case. Asteroid bases (with oxygen) would be so cool!

I'd also like to see more done with asteroid and moon environments. I enjoyed the above posted air generation and containment and unique creatures. No gravity would make traversing the asteroids with grappling hooks, very fun. Slinging yourself around rock to rock, we'd need either gravity boots to stick to a asteroid, or the ability to mine and keep grappled to an asteroid.
